Might want to get some thick rubber bands or little velcro loops to tidy up those loose straps. They might end up getting caught in branches and whatnot as you hike. Just roll them up and put something around them to keep them from flopping around.

>Avalanche airbag pack for snow use, along with all the other rescue gear
>Moto pack for day/evening rides. Toolkit, camelbak, radio, FAK, fieldbook/registration/insurance/etc, survival stuff. (It's actually an old snowmobile pack.)

I've got another avalanche airbag pack (Highmark Pro) not pictured, in addition to the Highmark II in the photo.

How does the 64 compare to an ALICE pack?

The spacing and kidney pads on the 64 look more comfortable but the straps look like they'd chaffe your shoulders.
>>
>>794817
Never tried an ALICE pack, so I wouldn't really know. My understanding was that the 64 was originally the American 62 pattern lightweight rucksack, which was replaced by the ALICE because the ALICE was cheaper. Simpler construction, less aluminum and more steel. With LBJ's expansion of the Vietnam war they couldn't afford to equip everyone with the 62s, and needed something cheaper. Canada bought the used 62s, upgraded all the components for winter use by changing the hardware and kept using them until the 80s when they started running out of replacements. Airborne and recce troops kept using them up until a few years ago though.

The one I have is mostly aftermarket components. The originals are 50+ years old and have seen really harsh use so it's basically impossible to find a serviceable original. The frame, A7As, and valise are original though. Pretty much impossible to destroy those.

The suspension system I have on it is really comfy. No complaints about the straps or anything. Best thing about these rucks is that all your gear is held together really tightly so there's no jostling or bouncing as you move. Makes things a little easier on your back and shoulders since your load isn't flopping all over the place as you move.

no, its the Atmos 50 ag.

most comfortable pack ive ever owned, fantastic weight displacement, good layout, love that the rain cover is velcro attached to the top not the bottom like on other packs, the 2 position water bottle sides are nice and easy grab in theory but i dont know what kind of snake-like contortionist you would have to be to put it back.

the suspension system is fantastic and it rides like a dream, literally my only 2 complaints is t side bottle thing and that the larger models couldnt be adjusted to fit my back
10/10 pack would recommend
>>
>>794907
Sounds like the 64 is about the same pack then.

ALICE packs have a problem with the frame where it causes your pack to sit about 3" off your back/waist, which is some unpleasant leverage.

I'm considering nabbing a 64 Ruck frame to replace with: is there any similar spacing issues with them?

I appreciate the info by the way
>>
>>794089
I could strap that on a pattern 82 webbing, more air flow to the back

>>795244
The 64 pattern doesn't have the weird V-shaped spacer and shelf that the ALICE has. The curve of the frame is right against your back with very little gap.

This pic is the kidney belt I have (not the bag or straps though). As you can see it's belt, frame, bag with very little gap in between.

$45 frame pack from Cal Ranch store.
65L Accend dry bag from Bass Pro Shop.

Pack has a very awesome waist belt, is very adjustable (for my long torso) and the whole setup is far superior to the A.L.I.C.E.frame pack I was considering.

Basically change out the drybag to any size or option from fire wood to elk quarters.

Me like.

How do you like those fetheads? I've got one and it seems to change the tone a bit (maybe my imagination). Not that that's a bad thing - sometimes I like it.
>>
>>796510
I freakin love em! I'm using them with condenser mics though (this model is intended for dynamic mics) but I haven't noticed any real change except the sweet ~22dB gain. What mics and preamp/interface do you use yours with? It could be changing the tone simply by supplying a different impedance to your pre/interface than the mic itself would. I've tested mine with my dynamic mics and doesn't seem anything objectively different to me really, just less noise.

How in the shit do you folks organize your gear within your bag? I always see people posting BOBs that have 100 little items, so they just throw that shit inside and hope for the best?

I have a daypack that i use for kayaking and to carry my main gear when i go on a longer venture but it doesnt have a ton of smaller pockets so when i pack for a long trip it hets sort of messy. I usually pack within it for the longer treks;
-leatherman surge
-firestarters
- mcirofib towel
-ferro rod
-fillet knife
-regular knife ( prolly gonna ditch this soon, already have the leatherman to do most tasks )
-headlamp
-lantern
-batteries
-lifestraw
- first aid
-small duct tape roll
- coupe lighters

Among some other shit i just cant think of atm. What do you guys do to organize?
>>
>>799389
>How in the shit do you folks organize your gear within your bag?

Ziplock bags for the most part, but most bags have multiple pockets and compartments to help with this.

A week in 40L is not going to be possible unless a) you are going super ultralight b) you are going to be hiking in a place with absolutely ideal weather all the time.

Just 7 days worth of food is going to take up a lot of space.

>>
>>802058
Can you eat non cooked food?
The answer is yes.
Some thru hikers go for months without cooking/stove. You just eat stuff that don't need cooking.

>>802069
>Just 7 days worth of food is going to take up a lot of space.
As someone who has hiked with food rations of up to two weeks it surprised me how little place food actually took compared to what I imagined it will beforehand.
40L is pretty constrictive if you carry a tent, sleeping bag and cold weather cloths+rain gear.

Alternatively in warmer climates you'll probably need to carry a lot more water...

>>801968
If you're asking this here, then the answer is probably no, for you.

It really depends on your gear. Folks with very high quality tents, rain gear, and sleeping gear miiiight be able to do a 40L for extended trips, but it would still be pushing it. If you have an older model large tent, or a bulky synthetic sleeping bag, or rain gear that doesn't roll up well, then forget about it. (I'm aware you can stash some of that outside the pack)

It also depends on what kind of food you're bringing. If you can afford to buy all dehydrated/freeze dried meals in pouches, then 1-2 weeks worth of food is doable as it is so light. But if you are like me and pack rice, sardines, GORP, stuff from the international food isle at the super market, then 1-2 weeks worth of food is going to weight a lot more.

Honestly I use a 70L for all my trips. I always have, I probably always will. I have extra space for shorter trips, and sometimes that allows me to bring some fun stuff I wouldn't normally like a bag of popcorn, a kite, whatever I feel like.

Also I just don't want to buy a smaller bag if I have something that works already. Although they do look nice.

lol. by woods do you mean the forest of gay boners that'll be entering you? how about you take the first step towards being manly or just being not a bitch and actually use that shit. Your pack is too clean. All your shit looks like it went directly from the UPS box into this ridiculous picture. If you have a pot/kettel packed away in that bag, that mug is still too clean to have ever been used near a open fire. Ya can't even be bothered to take that shit to a park to take a picture with a tree or some grass in it.

Goddamn. You got all your shit strapped to the only strap on the pack "modern luxuries". All you've done is inconvenience yourself if you want to grab anything. It's a fucking DAY PACK and you're hauling an expensive axe like your gonna go bushcraft your ass some shelter and all that youtube shit. Can't fit too many days worth of food in there. Can't fit much of anything but you've got an axe and a rediculous mug.

I'm not against being a beginner. I'm not against bushcraft or axes or fjallraven or even tin mugs. In fact I wouldn't be against this picture if you hadn't included some bullshit statement about eschewing luxuries.

I'm on the PCT right now. I'd say the vast majority of hikers are carrying either the Circuit or some type of Osprey, with the Circuit being a fair amount more popular. It's really a great pack and was pretty much designed for thru-hiking. As for fit/comfort, the only way you'll know is by trying them on. Tons of satisfied hikers using either pack. I'm using a Circuit, kind of wish I got the Ohm 2.0 though because it's smaller and lighter.

Hmm yeah that's kinda what I've been doing. Here's the only pic I could find of my pack all packed-up I think I wanted my hammy on top to keep it better protected (it has arch poles to hold the canopy up and I didn't want to damage them by dropped my pack down on the ground.

Trouble is, I only brought my light fleece sleebin bag because it was hot this time but if I had to bring my bigger winter bag I'd have quite the conundrum. Always bring my little sidehammock too because it's such a joy to be able to sit on it and hold all my stuff alongside my regular hammock.

Awesome. Beautiful terrain, cool people from all over the world. I'm at mile 907, Mammoth Lakes, about a third of the trail. Left May 6 ( a little late but I'm a little fast). I haven't been tracking costs thAt much but gear, including clothing, was probably around $1,500-2,000 for me. Costs per mile for food, fuel, occasional motel stay... Maybe $1.50/mile? There are better cost breakdowns out there from pct bloggers.

I have pretty typical pct gear. Ula circuit, tarp tent moment dw, enlightened equipment quilt, mh ghost whisperer jacket, running shorts, darn tough socks etc. Wearing Altra lone peak shoes... EVERYONE is wearing these, they're so damn comfortable. Let me know if you have other q's. Heading back to the trail tmrw so it might be a few days before I can respond.

What other tents do you see on trail? Been eyeing the BA Fly Creek UL 2. I'm not a big fan of anything that uses trekking poles to set up. I want to be able to use it after the PCT and I don't use trekking poles often

Big Agnes tents are very common on the pct, esp the fly creek and the copper spur. With the fly creek, I've heard many complaints about the the front entrance, most seem to prefer the side entrance of the copper spur.

Jesus fuck, why would you voluntarily use that Swedish crap?

They're standard issue for the National Guard here - no one who has a dollar to their soul will use it more than once.

I even tried attaching a waist belt and new straps to the frame - it is still a miserable thing.

>Fucks your back
>No room for everything
>One compartment for everything
>Heavy for its 35L capacity
>Frame does nothing, except creak against the back straps, which provide no comfort, just frustration

I mean, I guess it's not too bad for a day pack - but again, the frame should be of use when carrying heavier weights, but it's not, and is completely arbitrary for smaller weights, just adds weights.

The ALICE pack was a massive improvement over this - that's saying a lot.
>>
>>808383
Because it seems half of /out/ is comprised of role playing kids that don't actually go out enough to realize milsurp gear is shit 95% of the time.
>>
>>808427
I got my ALICE pack because it was cheap (35 euros). Had to go olive/woodland as it actually is my service backpack - and has to endure being thrown in/out of the trucks we ride in, have people pile theirs on top of it, and sometimes sit on it.

>Is it light?
No.
>Is it comfy?
If the straps don't twist, if the waist belt doesn't get caught on the flak jacket or chest rig, if the chest strap hasn't slid down to the waist strap where I can't reach it with the pack on. Then still mostly no.
>Why do I use it?
Because I've already spent like 700 euros on gear the government hasn't provided me with in an adequate fashion. Got a MOLLE II in the mail now, hopefully that will be an improvement.

Whenever I see those brand-spanking-new chest rigs on /k/ or the neat-and-tidy out of the box gear on /out/ I always wonder. After a single weekend of field exercises none of my new gear looks like that anymore. The conclusions are not flattering.
>>
>>808457
Not sure if you're arguing with me or against me.
Back when I started hiking I used to use plenty of milsurp equipment back from my army days.
High quality gear is quite a financial commitment. Nothing wrong with using it.

>The estwing is new but I love this pack with a passion.

With you, mate. A crucial part of using military equipment is hating most of it in one way or another. Might have something to do with the physical strain you use it under - but I have issues with almost everything I use. When given half a chance, I upgrade to something lighter, more ergonomic and easier to use.

Picture to prove I know what I'm saying about those Swedish """rucksacks""". Here's the two I was issued - and my ALICE pack, which I at least somewhat hate.
>>
>>808463
I enjoy the pack. It's not an osprey or anything but it's mine and I enjoy it. I'm not sure why that's such an impossible concept but believe what you will. Doesn't really bother me.
>>
>>808476
You bet your ass it's not an Osprey.

It's a shitty Swedish milsurp pack with a useless frame, no waist belt, and no compartmentalization.

From the looks of it, you've never even used it for any extended period of time, or carried any weight in it. I liked mine too, before I began using it.

If you carry the bare minimum - sleeping system, spare change of clothes, water and spare boots, it already becomes unbearable.

this has got to be the most elaborate troll ever. Or home boy really has some fun lessons to learn out there.

>I haven't chopped down that many trees yet
>pulls the pack together nicely

>the way you attach that axe attachment be like...
>paracord bracelet attached to pack (?) at best your a try hard, at worst you actually bought that to unravel it.
>always changing the pristine little fag caps
>unused pack meant for school
>unused mug(why?) and the pinterest fake mug
>unused axe "chopped down trees with it" KAK

I'm sure you can fit "ten days" worth of food in there, along with sleeping gear, shelter, rain gear, spare socks, first aid and water. Going out with that is about as "manly" as it gets, if we're viewing masculinity in terms of the shit you own.

>don't forget ya axe buddy!

Seriously though, I may be a stranger yelling at you over the internet, but just don't die out there sempai. You'll probly be able to figure your way through a night or two with that silly set up albeit uncomfortably and probably taking chances you didn't know you were taking. Just take lots of water, bring an extra emergency blanket or sweater and always have a back up plan. Definitely let as many people possible know where you're going and for how long with as much detail as possible.

Godspeed.

You are correct, these cave dwellers how fucking dare they enjoy the outdoors without taking selfies 24/7 or such as your picture so they can place on facebook/twitter to brag and feel accomplished

Yeah fuck those who enjoy the outdoors without being a $15 coffee drinking hipster that takes a picture of every step (and make sure to include just enough of their Danner red lace boots included in the pictures before they put an instagram filter on it no doubt)

We get it, you might have been outdoors once and are just projecting your fear

What is wrong with you all, get pictures of the outdoors ASAP; make sure you include your gear so you can prove to the anonymous people on this Vietnamese trading card board that you are so much better than the rest of them because you went on a 500meter walk and have pictures to verify

What the fuck am I doing with my life, I should have been taking pictures of my gear outdoors this whole time

I'm here for you buddy :)
The first step to starting is getting inspiration. Look around for packs that you like, but aren't super complicated. For a long time, I was obsessed with Duluth packs and I would just browse around and look for designs to essentially copy.

>>803173
this pack was made with a ton of inspiration from the bushcrafter pack, and this >>803302 pack was based off the roll top scout.

Templates would have been nice, but they don't exist, so just look at the dimensions of the pack listed in descriptions and base the main bucket off that, then add everything based off what looks right. You learn a ton as you go, don't be afraid to jump into a project without a complete plan. My first pack was a complete mess, but I learned a lot making it.

It is possible to make packs with cheap modern sewing machines, but you'll have to use very lightweight materials. If you don't already have a sewing machine, ask your mom, grandma, gf, etc.

I HIGHLY recommend actually using a high power machine though. I found a perfect condition singer 15-91 on craigslist for $80 that can sew several layers of leather. These vintage machines are very powerful and can be found for very cheap. look around craigslist.

For materials I mostly work with canvas, and I really like http://www.bigduckcanvas.com/ I reccomend not going below 12 oz for packs. I mostly use 18 oz.

http://www.rockywoods.com/ is great for general materials you need like webbing, buckles etc.

In short get a sewing machine, some fabric, thread, and literally just fuck around, it's the best way to learn.
>>

Stop being logical, the people that complain about rifles being so scary and unnecessary live in lies. People like yourself and others take what precautions are necessary for activities.

Noguns will always be afraid of haveguns, the loud noise and strong recoil of a .22LR is enough to break their feminine Soymilk bones.

I know too many noguns that have panic attacks if someone mentions a firearm in any method. Too many times I hear, "IS THAT LEGAL? OMG IS THAT ILLEGAL????"

Firearm in question was 28" barrel 12 gauge shotgun, REMOVING pistol grip for Elmer Fudd stock. Somehow in retard minds that means illegal, not the reverse however but going from pistol grip to standard wood stock somehow is seen as "illegal".

If that does not tell you how uninformed/ignorant/afraid noguns are, then maybe these cunts can enlighten us on how ignorant they are as well as WHY? My father did not teach me how to shoot and I did not end up a faggot like the rest of these fucks.
