the best spots are well-kept secrets. try the southern appalachians, although there is some good stuff in New Hampshire/Vermont.

It's all few and far between. youll have to live somewhere for a few years to actually find the good spots where a Google search turns up almost nothing but the occasional article on a wordpress blog.

I would avoid New Hampshire. I go up there for a casual day hike. I'd say go further north to Maine.

depends on where in New Hampshire. I would say avoid Great Gulf Wilderness like the plague, just out of respect for the poor place. I can advise checking out Pemigewasset Wilderness, but leaving it to off-trail hikes.

perhaps Cranberry Wilderness in WV?
