Co-worker was telling me all week (and last weekend) that we gotta get out fishing. Hit him up everyday last weekend, yesterday, and today and he always has an excuse. Real fishermen realize that fishing takes priority over real life problems like spending time with the wife and kids. At least Miami anon was down. We 'bout to catch sumn feesh.

Talk about fishin.

Not just shilling here, but I think these Strike Kingâ„¢ KVDâ„¢ Perfect Plasticsâ„¢ Swimmin Shadsâ„¢ might be my favorite of any little soft flukes I have tried. They cost a bit more than Zoom, but I think it's worth it. Walmart even has then but they are closer to $6/pk while Zooms cost half as much.

Anyway, the EWG hooks seem to sit in the groove just perfect and they swim well because of that. The plastic is slightly more firm than Zooms and those Gambler ones. But I think the best part is the size. They are larger than Zoom Super Fluke Jr's which may not get big bass moving, smaller than the full size Swimmin fluke which are pretty big for pond bass from shore, and quite a bit smaller than those big Gamblers I got.

Well i made my decision.

Tons of boats, but conditions were nice. Wind picked up in the evening which made for a good drift.

Caught tons of sea robins. Just this one keeper fluke. I found an excellent hole for them though. Gonna get back out when the tide is right.
>>
>>785773
I think I should keep being mean to you, it helps you catch fish. You caught that bass in Monday right after I told you it wouldn't hurt to wax your upper lip.

>>785790
So how far do you paddle on the average day? Open water or in a bay or something?

At least you don't have to deal with wakeboarding boads. Sometimes they are out on one little lake I fish from shore and they are built to make huge waves on purpose. They pass by once and there are waves for 5min afterwards.
>>
Gonna make bait by soaking hotdog bits in minced garlic and fruit punch koolaid.

Gotta ask though, for those of you who have done this before, what am I gonna catch?

I heard catfish go nuts for it, but I was hoping for something less of a pain in the ass to deal with.

Do trout or bass have a preference?
>>
>>785790
How much did that kayak cost? I'm looking to buy one like that, preferably $ 400 or less.
>>
>>785795
Only problem with the hot dogs is they don't stay on the hook for shit unless you hook em through the skin. You are going to let that mixture soak in the fridge, right?

You could also try chicken livers soaked in whatever. Chicken livers are normally better than hot dogs for cats.
>>
>>785797
Yeah, I figured I'd let it soak several days in the fridge.

I don't have a problem with catfish; if I can catch it, I'll eat it; I'm also hoping to catch something other than cats. If the hotdogs are only good for that, I may try something else.

This was 3mi of paddling on the long island sound. Id say 5mi is about as much as i can do comfortably. Maybe 10, but id be fucking tired...

I bought it on sale for 450 at dicks. They do it every year, but its over now. Consider the paddle and pfd cost too. Like another 100 bucks. Plus i also have a wetsuit, visibility flags, whistle, comfortable seat ect...it gets expensive if you want to do it right. Safe, and comfortably.

I literally went on this board, to this thread, specifically to see if anyone had posted about Perfect Plastics.
Went out to a shithole lake today and still slayed for the 45 minutes I was fishing because I was using those little slices of gold to fish with.
It must be the combination of the shad shape and the coffee scent because shads are amazing for bass.
>>
>>785794
I don't like mean Pepsi
>>
>>785804
Coffee scent? Fish like coffee scent?
>>
>>785809
That's what Mr. KVD calls it anyway.
>>
>>785809
They have almost a sweet scent to them, it's interesting.

>>785804
Yeah something about the size, shape, and whatever other magic they use is great. I have some of the brush hogs but haven't used them a ton. Not sure about the worms either but I might pick some up one day. I just really like those shads and have had really good luck with em compared to other brands. They sit on an EWG hook perfectly too.

>>785808
Pepsi just needs some sleep. I'm so fuckin tired after not sleeping for shit last night and working all day today then comin out there.

I really want to hit some fish at that second lake we were at. I know there are nice bass in there, just gotta find them.
>>
>>785815
I'm still wondering what ran off with my worm and hook in that last lake. It didn't feel like I got snagged on weeds that time.
>>
>>785820
Was that you or Miguel that said something was sucking in your lure and line a couple weeks ago all the way at the end of those rocks at the Pompano lake?

I mean maybe it was a turtle or even snagged a fat lazy carp but either probably would've put up a fight. Or it was just a snag and the rod flexing and mono stretching made an underwater log or big weed patch feel like it was pulling a little.
>>
>>785828
Can I get the OP image without the text please?

Thanks
>>
>>785820
I know that feeling. Was surf fishing at dusk. Rod fell over and was heading for the water. Dove on it, yanked, tried to reel in, but suddenly the line went slack. When I got the line in, whatever it was, had bit through a 20in steel lead and escaped with 2 hooks and the bait.

Still wonder what is was. Probably a shark, but I'll never know for sure.

Damn weekend. Those dolphins aren't spooked at all by all of the surfers though. They pretty much swim extremely close to shore right next to where all of the surfers are. There might be baitfish there, but it's barely out of my cast range.
>>
>>785828
That was me too. I think it was a carp since I saw something bigger than a bass swim up and under a few times and casted right by it. I definitely felt a real bite and some tugging in the beginning but then the line just kept pulling away and eventually snapped near the little swivel thing.

You gotta help me run through a few of these worm hooks and some of the soft plastics. It's getting out of control. Those 1/2oz weights are getting heavy too and I bet those will work well for you on a day like today with wind coming hard from the side.

I forgot last weekend I bought 4 or 5 packs of those Eagle Claw hooks too. And then Dick's had the sale on those Gamakatsu ones today plus I still needed some 5/0 EWG's for the Gambler minnows.

I kinda like those cheaper Eagle Claws because I can bend the hook off or snags sometimes and just bend it back instead of losing the hook and weight. The Trokar hooks that end up being ~$2ea are way too much for bass fishing. I could see running those on #65 braid in saltwater. The Gamakatsus seem to be a decent median and they ended up being $3/pk with the sale which is only slightly more than the Eagle Claw Lazer Sharps.

Andybody order hooks or weights in bulk? Seems like these worm hooks should cost less if I weren't buying them in packs of 5 hooks. I think Bass Pro sells bigger packs (maybe 20 hooks?) but forgot how much they want.

How do I get a fighter?
I've never had a fish drag line, fully bend my rod, or forced me to put my back into it.

In fact, 99% of my hits are within 10ft of the shore, and its super lame.

I would do the UL, it would be a blast for trout, perch, and smaller walleye. Baitcasters are best for throwing larger lures, stuff that largemouth bass can fit in their mouths. If you are throwing a lot of 1/2oz lures, you could do the memecaster.

I have mixed opinions on those chartruese tail worms with the darker body. They work, but I get lots of bites where they just grab the tail. It gets annoying because they will hang on for a few seconds and you think you have a fish, but then they let go without even touching the hook.

um, guys, how much does water weigh?

by that I mean, I left my paddle boat anchored at my dock and thought "yeah fuck putting the tarp on", and now it's pouring outside and basically tl;dr, do I have to worry about capsizing when the max capacity is like 860lbs?
>>
>>786284
Chartruese just works some days. No idea why it works so well. I always used to be all about natural silvers and golds but a lot of my biggest bass have been on chartruese stuff.

And I have no idea about those premade rigs, not sure what that is all about. But soft plastics are going to get torn up either way. If you rig them with a jighead or just so they aren't weedless, they may last a little longer. But otherwise they are pretty much single-use, maybe good for a couple fish before they get too beat up.

It's official, I need to grab a smaller tackle bag. The lake I was just at, I have to walk a couple hundred yards from my car. Most lakes I can park right by the lake and don't have to carry my stuff very far. But with this South Florida heat, my overloaded bag is killing me. It's heavy as hell and hurts my shoulder. And when I'm sweating, the strap digs into my shoulder and neck.

The pic related Gander Mtn one is only $25 or $30, nice and small so I can throw a few choice lures in there as well as shit for soft plastics.

>>786334
I agree with TX fag. That Cotton Candy color is bretty gud. But in certain conditions if they aren't going for the chartruese stuff, I like darker ones like Junebug, Sprayed Grass, or another purple/black that is called Mulberry or something.

>>786337
Because Japan.

>>786368
>tackle box
Go with a tackle bag instead. Then get the flat plastic boxes and you can organize everything and switch them out as needed. Plano Weekender bags are nice for the price. I was looking at the Weekender 3600 size bags but it is a little too large for my second pond bag.
>>

You'll get the hang of it. Plus it's the Ugly Stik, those rods don't have super fast action. The weight is nice though so you can get some decent distance on casts and run it a little deeper if you want.

Try casting a 1oz jig after that.

Any equipment suggestions for bow fishing? I've got a 60 lbs compound bow I use for deer. Still good or should I see about getting something else? Best brands for reels/arrows/line?

Oh and I caught two bass yesterday. Felt pretty good since I used rubber worms and those usually don't work for me.
>>
I'm messing around with bucktail and teaser for surf fishing. I lost 2 bucktail + teaser today because the line, not knot, snapped

Does dropper loop weaken the monofilament overall line strength somehow? My line is snapping right around the spot of the dropper, once during casting, another time I think I got a fish or a snag. 1/2 oz shouldn't have snap that 8 lb mono and my drag was set low enough to not snap the 12 lb mono line.

I'm not sure because the twist of dropper loop is weakening the main line strength, or maybe the line simply get cut by a sharp pebble. I might try out something else to place a teaser instead. Do you guys think using the uncut tag end of double uni would work better?
>>
>>786401
I've been told that making a deer bow into a fishing bow destroys it's cams. So be sure you want to really do it. Also research what you can legally take. Here it's pretty much just gar.

Hello my man, I can tell you a bit about bowfishing. I've got a samick sage (cheap good recurve) with 55# limbs on it. I was running 40# limbs but I wasn't getting super good penetration on deep or long shots on carp. I use pretty much AMS everything, the reel is GOAT. For arrows, avoid the ones that have the wire "V" like barb on the end, those are kinda shit. Get the ones with the long wing like blades on the sides that fold into the arrow. I would post pics but I don't think I have any of the arrows on my phone.

Bowfishing is super fun though, highly recommend. Pic is a nice carp I got last year.

Are they specific bowfishing arrows? Or just regular hunting ones?

I always thought that you had to get a fishing specific bow with a reel on it, never knew you used hunting bows and attached the reel yourself. What does a decent reel run? And what kind of line do they use?
>>
>>786538
The arrows are specific to bowfishing, they have aggressive barbs, no fletching, and a little stop attached to the end so the slide can move up and down the arrow. Most reels mount on your bow where a whisker biscuit or something would go. I actually don't hunt, i bought that bow specifically for fishing, but it already had all the mounting areas (sage's are ~$140 btw and amazing bows for the money).

I think the AMS reel is like $60 or alittle more if it's packaged with an arrow. It feeds this heavy line that's kinda like paracord into a bottle. It's the reel I have in that pic. I think you can get a zebco which is basically like a standard fishing reel that uses fishing line for like 30-40$ but I wouldn't trust fishing line for the bigger carp.

Of course my cousin one tone duct taped a spinning reel to a shitty old bear brand compound and jammed one of my spare slides on a target arrow and shot two more gar than me. So anything works really, I just like my set up.
>>
>>786514
I'd use whatevers most recommended insofar as it's not really expensive or something. I'd be casting from shore if that makes a difference.

20 lbs fishing line wouldn't cut it? I have a couple hundred feet of 550 cord if that'll work.

>>
>>786552
Forgot to say make sure you check your local laws too. Some species are only supposed to be taken on line and hook. That's why lots of people bowfish for carp since they are invaisive and it is normally legal.

Other anon mentioned it with the gar. If you end up trying to bowhunt largemouth or something, you could probably get fucked by the game warden.

>>786557
Yes. If it has monofilament line, make sure you change the line if they have been sitting around. It's normally only good for a season, even less if you use it a lot. The memory gets bad and you get loops and the line gets brittle.

And make sure to check back or post te question again. I don't trout fish. Mepps are just GOAT for anything and lots of people love them for trout.
>>
>>786559
Well I'm the anon that has been asking this whole time (mostly). As I pointed out here >>786471 there is a bunch of species I can bowfish for (about 20 or so). Then there is only five places in the whole state you can't bowfish.

Dunno about other states but to keep bass here it needs to be 15" minimum (from ponds/lakes).
>>
>>786410
>making a deer bow into a fishing bow destroys it's cams

Why?
>>
>>786552
If it has the correct mounting areas (which I bet it does) then yeah, it would work just fine. Now some other anon said it might mess it up for hunting which could be true, I've heard bowfishing is hard on bows. I've just never owned a compound and bought my bow specifically for bowfishing so I can't really say whether that's true or not.

Yeah the pic you posted has never worked well for me. The arrow in my pic is what I'm using now and it's so much better imo.

I was kinda talking out my ass when I said I wouldn't trust fishing line. Where I am though, you really can't get line over 20 lb test in stores and the carp get well over that. If you have access to 100 lb line then I'm sure that would be good. I would still drop the $40 and buy the legit bowfishing zebco reel then and not do what my cousin did. I would still have niggling doubts in my mind though, it gets tangled up in rocks and roots that could chew up monofilament. My reel has actual cord that I don't see getting chewed up and I could probably hang my bodyweight from. I just trust it more.
>>
>>785921
I also say yes
>>
>>786562
Ahh, I see. I think in FL, we aren't supposed to take "Game Fish" which is mostly largemouth and peacock bass for freshwater around here. Could be more. Would be fun to hit snakeheads and carp with a bow. Especially the sailfin cats. Fuck those things.

How did you get that much on in a first place?

Fastest way is to spool it onto another reel. Otherwise you can wrap it around the feeder spool it came with by hand but it takes a minute.

Also, now you see why I tell people to spend $10 more and get a combo with a reel not made of plastic. Seriously, you could probably find something on sale for $20 that will be way better. Otherwise for a ~$30 reel, look at Shimano Siennas, Abu Cardinals, Pflueger Trions...

I haven't seen em at Dick's. I was looking for one of the classic yellow and black Black Furies recently and I had to order it online. All of the Dick's around here seem to have a couple basic colors- natural brown skirt and silver blade, yellow and silver, white and silver. Good selections of Mepps are so hard to find around here.

Miami Bass Pro doesn't even carry Mepps. Gander Mtn discontinued a ton but were waiting for new shit to come in for that section so not sure what they have now. Bass Pro needs to discontinue their shitty store brand inlines and carry more Mepps.

Seriously, most Bass Pro store brand stuff is ok but I will never buy another one of their inlines. I wouldn't even take one for free.
>>
>>786560
That's like $150 worth of mepps. Jealous

I think I've seen those black furies at Walmart in my area. Probably not in many sizes though. I need to go get another after I lost mine.

Walmarts near me don't carry them at all. As far as inlines, they have a couple of Rooster Tails and one Panther Marlin. Even in IL, I think they stopped selling Mepps at Walmart a few years ago.

>>786689
Probably double that tbqhwy. And that's just what is in that pic. Shit adds up too quick. But cheaper inline spinners just don't work as well. Plus Mepps has so many good color combos.

>>

That's cool they still have em. All the Walmarts here have a bit of saltwater stuff so that automatically kills the freshwater selection. But like I said, even the one near me in IL stopped selling them a few years ago so you are lucky. That IL one didn't have a big outdoors and fishing dept anyway.

Bought my mom her first fishing license in years. Took her by Dick's and she immediately fell in love with the Megabass Pop X/Max lures so there went another $60 or so bones. Mistakenly showed her the website for ordering "Premium" (non-US market / holiday colours) and she wants the whole catalog. But who doesn't? Damned things are beautiful. She really liked the Live Target frog popper that came in my last LTB too. Gonna have to get her one of those for her birthday.

Think I'll start her on BPS and Rebel poppers before I let her throw the high-dollar stuff. God help me if she has a lot of topwater success this summer. I'll be ordering the whole megabass catalog.

I'm the one who requested this thread's picture, I'm not even mad. I just wanted to switch it up and I knew there'd be the one (or more, but probably a samefag) poster who bitches about Japanese cartoons on a Hawaiian tiki carving volcano.

Actually relevant to fishing, one of my friends is showing interest in actually learning to fish. He's done it in the past but didn't have anyone to show him how to do it right. He used a snap swivel for plain hooks for panfish. I'm gonna get him set up with some new line since the last time we went, I could snap it by barely pulling, and a few lures. It's hard to hide my excitement that one of my friends wants to do more than play Xbox every time we hang out. He actually asked me if I brought my fishing stuff with me today when I showed up because sometimes I leave it in the car, but alas, I took it out last night

I was looking at those things again last night. I want to buy the Baby Bass ones every time I'm at Dick's.

But I also bought a couple overpriced Live Target lures when they were on sale and haven't done any better with them compared to similar lures with less detail and a smaller price tag. Dick's even had those BaitBalls on sale for really cheap last night and those always caught my eye but I didn't want to pay $15+ for them, but between reading reviews and my expereince with their other lures, I didn't go for the meme.

I think the presentation and where/when you fish the lure is a lot more important than an artist's airbrushing.

Fuck I've never caught a bass on topwater in ten years up here in the northeast. Granted I don't try very often because zero confidence. I always end up using senkos, creature baits or jigs. I'm determined to catch some frog fish this summer though, kind of waiting till it's for sure post spawn.

I had good luck on the poppers in like February when the water was cooler. Most fun way to fish IMO. But it's about the same time that they were hitting shallow cranks and spinners too so idk. I never had luck with poppers until recently since I didn't give em a chance at the proper time.

Poor guy got foul hooked by the second treble right into the gills(I mean literally inside the gills
I couldn't muster the courage to trash a 10$ rapala I just bought to save the fishes life.
Worst part is, I realize now I don't even have a knife sharp enough to fillet the lil'bugger
>>
>>787164
>>787183

I should mention that I almost exclusively fish rivers and creeks. I think top water works much better in moving water and generally works all day from spring till fall. If the top water bite isn't hot I usually shift to drifting of cranking stuff through the middle of the water column. Wacky rigged worms with a few slip shots and inlines all work well.

I've never had much luck fishing lures on the bottom with the exception of throwing jigs into spillways

My line was completely new(like <20hrs of use), but when I looked at it closer it was fraying, like 100ft of it was chewed up to all hell, after I cut it off, and now the grinding noise is gone.

is this a bigger problem than cheap line?

Well first you need some double-sided tape. Apply that to the bottom of shoes.

Lillies are a bitch but I fish some lakes with bad weed patches until 10yds+ out. You're gonna want some heavy braid. If you do hook a bass, they will try and dig in. I like using weedless Texas rigged stuff. Cast it as far as possible past the cover and bring it back in. The bigger bass are always further out, but I will hit medium sized ones closer to the weeds. The key is to start reeling in like crazy once you get back to the weeds so you just jump the lure over them. The good bass seem to be outside of the weed beds.

If the bass there are actually in the lilles, you can try a weedless frog. Otherwise I will sometimes do a lizard or horny toad with no weight and weedless rigged and run it along the top, sometimes dropping it between the lilles. But you still need strong line.

Nvm about the Shad Raps, I think you have a handful in that top slot in the bottom box.

Seriously tho, rubberbands
>>
>>787337
I can't be fucked with those rubber bands; without them there's a 50% chance you'll have to deal with a hook tangle, but with them there's a 100% chance you'll have to deal with god damn rubber band.

Shad Raps are god tier for walleyes. The ones I've got are pretty small though, I'll be picking up bigger ones.

Got a few Mepps too( 0-2s for trout and 5s for northerns). Protip: Mepps used to have a lure called the Elix, it was discontinued but the best trout lure I've ever used. My dad swears by them which is how I found out about them. They can still be found online.

I'm mostly looking at recommendations for crankbaits. I wasn't clear but these are my crankbait trays

I figured crankbaits. But had to throw Mepps in there anyway.

If you want good lipless rattlers, those Red Eye Shads are real nice. For Rapalas, the X-Raps have been my favorite recently. They kinda remind me of a Husky Jerk with better action and better color combos. There are some nice Yo-Zuri 3DB's as well.

And one day you will get on the rubberbands. Just gotta get a few more cranks in there and you will wonder how you lived without them. For me, it's more like "95% chance it will take 5 minutes to get that one lure I want untangled". I would rather deal with the rubberbands for 5 seconds.

>>
>>786298
holy gosh this lure is amazing /out/
I don't know how to describe it, I've never seen a plastic do what this does.
the slightest tug(not a pull or snap) causes it to dart in a figure 8 pattern.

I know I'm new to this scene, but I was honestly amazed when I was getting way more movement from this 2$ pre rigged worm, than I was that 10$ rapala I bought which marketed itself for it's insane movement
>>
>>787389
Most worms/jerkbaits do something similar to that, and good topwater lures will zig zag across the totop
>>
>>787393
do they have to be straight tubes, like, no tail? because all 3 worm products I've bought have had tails on them, does that just kill the action?
>>
>>787396
>>787389
You can probably rig your own straight worms or curly tails to swim like that too. Tiny adjustments in weights and hooks and their placement can make a big difference.

There's also some cool shit when you get into worms like Zoom's "Shakey Head" and "Finesse" worms. They do a whole lot more than what you would expect a stick of rubber to do underwater.

Even with a regular Texas rig, the finesse and shakey head worms like to wiggle themselves down to the bottom. The weight will burrow into the mud on the bottom and the tail will wiggle above a little bit. Drives the bass crazy.

Hard to fish them with strong wind tho which kills me in FL. With some of this shit, I'm thinking about rigging a 1/2oz barrel weight like 3' up the line just so it will cast out there and kinda stay down. Then let the 1/8oz shakey head rig do it's thing down the line. I have to test it out.
>>
I just lost yet another big bass off this Mepps

I had him all the way into shore and was reaching down to lip him and he threw the lure

This is really beginning to piss me off
>>
>>787396
No but alot of it is matching the weight to the lure, to the retrieve
Glad the one you works well, now the true test is how well does it catch fish
>>
>>787424
Git gud.

Mepps and other inlines have always been one of my better lures in terms of hook ups and lost fish. As long as I'm not running a tiny one, they catch most of the fish that nibble on them.
>>
>>787386
What lure did he hit? I have never had a turtle hit a lure (or at least get hooked by one) but Miami anon's BF tries to stay away from them at all costs since he hooked that snapper on a shiner.
>>
Went fishing and lost two mepps in the river. Gonna go back once the water level drops and see if I can't get them back.

Luckily they weren't anything special but it sucks to lose such a good lure. Had caught a couple greenies on each
>>
>>787451
I have so many Mepps in the bottom of this one lake. The water level dropped a little bit but they are on some random snags like 30' from shore so I don't think I will ever get them back without going for a swim.

At least braid has saved me on a few of them. Sometimes I can bend the hook enough to get them out. Other times I just have to rip through heavy weeds or fallen branches.
