What was your worst lost experience in the wild?

>be me
>be alone
>returning from a mountain hike
>somehow miss the trail I took on the way up
>following small animal paths in a general downward direction (eventually I must find the trail, I think)
>end up in a deep steep stream of water, no way out of it, as it is surrounded by small cliffs
>only way is to follow it downstream, but there are no paths and the forest is super dense here, so only option is to walk inside the rivulet, hoping from rock to rock. (thank god for the stick I've found the day before)
>it is getting late, every minute less and less light is passing through the leafs
>no cell battery, nobody knows exacly where I am
>panic and adrenaline rush
>think: (If I break my ankle I'm done...)
>after an hour of rock jumping finally I notice a wooden bridge crossing the river
>(I'm saved)
>literally fall on my knees and thank god for that
>return safely
>>
>>784234
i would love to see a wood i can get lost in.
god damn i would pay good money for that experience.
here if throw a stone randomly it will hit something man made.

Once got "lost" while "fishing" with a friend.

There was supposed to be this headwater near Covington, MI with good fishing but it had shitty access. It was a 30 min hike one way with giant constant up and down hills and heavy tree cover.

It really wasnt that bad looking back on it. We werent much more than an hour or two hike from 141 or 41. But I wanted to gtfo because the fishing wasnt good, the sun was setting, and my friend had drunk up all my water.

Luckily I wasnt an old lady so I still had my bearings. We picked a vector and followed it 30 min and popped out on an ATV trail 15 ft from our vehicle.

Wasnt techinically very lost but the dispair was tangible.
>>
>>784525
>Luckily I wasnt an old lady so I still had my bearings
I hope she's happy that she'll live on as a meme
>>
>>784253
Where do you live?

AK anon here, and we have about 200 million acres of public land. The bulk of it you can get absolutely lost as fuck on and die if you don't know what you are doing.

>go /out/ wheeling alone
>1984 toyota
>truck breaks down "ohshit.jpg"
>smoke unloading from the hood
>open the hood battery hit the side wall grounded out and exploded along with melting all the wires

>had 6 cases of water thank god
>all I got was a .308 win with 40 rds And a 22lr with 550 thunderbolts
>tried using cell phone no service
> didn't leave the truck thought someone would drive by
>#Nope
>was stuck out there for a fucking week
>hunted for small game (rabbit and ground squirrel) only got a rabbit
>a convoy of jeeps drove by looked at me asked me if I was okay
>started to tell them what happened
>towed by strap for 3 hours in the dirt and 4 hours on the freeway home

>never went that way again fuck that place

Pic is of truck that broke down

y'all gonna think I'm a bitch but
>first ever solo overnight camp
>drove my rear wheel drive car into the bush first on gravel track then over some ok sand and dirt, i could pick my track easy and miss the boggy shit
>parked car out of sight and hiked in some
>fast forward I'm lying down going to sleep
>hear dirt bikes and think they are going for my car (this was an excuse for I'm bitching out and want to get to my car)
>pack up and continue to night nav through the bush back to car with only two land marks (game trails) and a bearing on my compass
>after i realise I'm having trouble finding my rig i panic and put all my shit down so i can move quicker to find my car
>realise immediately thats a shitty idea
>pick gear back up and find car after 20 mins night time bush walking
>THEN
>for some reason i decide to drive out of the bush
>hard as fuck in the dark
>end up almost getting bogged because i follow a bit of a trail that leads directly to the softest sand in the area
>get out
>drive home
>found some dude on the side of the road who broke down or some shit
>actually knew the dude
>helped him on his way
>end
>>
>>784234
I'm pretty sure that it would be quite literally impossible to get lost in my country.
>>
Never been lost. I've not known where I was many times but I have never not been able to just walk 10-20 miles and correct the issue.
>>
>tripping balls on psychedelics and weed
>drunk out of my mind
>trying to walk home several miles through the woods
>it's midnight
>flashlight battery dims, then dies

Terifying. Never smoked since.
>>
>solo backpacking in new area
>following old trail, not well maintained
>eventually the trail is just gone
>continue cross-country
>going through the weirdest moss shit I've ever seen
>like 2' deep green moss junk, have to goosestep everywhere
>get to wet area, should be an ATV trail on the other side
>try to cross
>end up waist deep in sludge
>finally get out and over to the ATV trail
>soaked through, no dry pants since was planning one night
>change socks, dry boots as best I can, set out
>should note that it is getting dark and was only 40F at this point
>follow trail for a while, discover that it had been rerouted away from where it used to go (fucking '80s USGS quad maps)
>gonna have to go cross country again to get back to vehicle, or 12mi down the trail to a road
>be moron and go head back east to car
>find a dry area to go through instead of more death sludge
>get going, temp is dropping rapidly
>more of that crazy moss
>have to stop and rest, wrap up in tarp, cook some freeze-dried spaghetti
>having crazy thoughts, I'm gonna die out here, etc. only like 4 miles from vehicle, smack between a busy ATV trail and campground
>literally have cell phone signal and here I am writing a goodbye note to my mom on my map
>get some food in me and get going again
>finally seeing familiar terrain, but all the goosestepping killed my quads
>literally having to use my arms to lift my legs to go over little branches at this point
>get back to car, still soaking wet, feels like it must be close to freezing, just sit there with the heat on for almost an hour before I can start driving
>thermometer in car says 26F

And that is how anon almost ded after covering less than 5 miles in 13 hours. The next day I had to get help to walk up a flight of stairs, couldn't lift my legs high enough by myself. Was over a week before I was walking normally again.
>>
>>785288
What a pussy. I do that every weekend without a flashlight. That is specifically a very fun activity.

>Cave diving with my dive buddy.

>See buddies friend is wide eyed, get him to calm down. Sign to him "Heaps of air left mate we aren't even far in. Just relax"
>Get to another squeeze (new territory for me in this cave)

>noticed what had happened to the line and laid his own!
> literally start crying, hard to keep the regulator in through sobs of relief.

I've never really had a lost experience before.

Closest thing i can think of is this one time a few weeks ago my granny forgot to buy the tendies at the store so i was like kinda starving to death.

I basically survived eating potatochips, Luckily for me they are indigenous to my area.

Not really a "lost" experience but I once had to hike out 7 miles in the dark on a twisted knee.

I often go into a local wildlife sanctuary alone for my field recordings. It's like 1000 acres in a dark rural town. I go in in the evening to setup and then wait till dark. Usually by around 10pm I'm packing up and hoofing it out of there (I arrange a pickup on the country road where the parking lot is). Anyway, the place isn't supposed to have people in there after dark so the blazes are really hard to see, especially with a crappy LED headlamp that has terrible color rendering. In daylight it's about a 25min hoof to where I record. One night I got totally lost in there while I was trying to escape. Not even on the trail anymore kinda lost, with spoopy ass sounds and things lurking all around me in the dark. My phone gets no service over there so usually there are no calls or texts that go through. Luckily a lone car went down the road at some point and I barely was able to hear it like a mile away through the wood. I just started crashing through the woods in that direction. Got to the field that leads to the parking area right as my friend was pulling in to pick me up.

"yawn. so, how was it? were you waiting long?"

The next year we did the Mt Whitney Trail in one day. I still want to try a cross country route up it one day.

My story

>go hiking in a big park north of Houston
>walk down trails with friends, testing out our kukris and machetes
>find weird spot on the trail covered by log, go climb over the log to go "off the trail" and "get lost"
>no path at all, we hack out way through this thick brush
>continue for an hour and a half, being attacked by mosquitos and cut up by thorns
>notice sound, tell friends to stop and head towards it
>go through field of chest high grass, it's music
>burst into someone's huge backyard, the whole family is having a pool party listening to country music
>wearing camo and wielding machetes, fulling expecting to get shot to death
>they laugh and wave at us, we wave awkwardly back
>we ended up in some huge development for these quasi-mansions, we showed up at one of just a few houses that were populated
>stumble around empty street, eat the rest of our food and drink all our water
>suns rapidly setting, set off across dirt field with huge construction vehicles
>end up walking down a highway at night
>group gets into an argument and splits up
>walk down old road with cemetery on it, into this weird back road that says no trespassing, friend thinks he sees UFO and freaks out
>after a few hundred feet, we turn back, afraid of being on logging land after dark (we actually were on a shortcut and were like 15 minutes away from car)
>other group gets to car, they're just standing there with park guys around them, explaining the situation, we have the keys to the car
>walk down highway again
>30 minutes later make it to front of park, rangers pick us up, we ride in back of pickup to our car and promptly leave

It was pretty fun, I was super tired afterwards though

I've spent alot of time deep in the woods in many different places. I've never been truly 'lost'.
There are times when i am orienteering through the bush off-trail and it takes me awhile to find my destination or point of interest.
But never been lost. Always have at least general idea where i am in respect to my surroundings, chosen landmarks, my starting point and my destination.
Its simply a matter of using a map and compass, and keeping track of how far or for how long you've traveled in any given direction. with this its easy to always maintain awareness of your position.

From my perspective, I literally cannot understand why people allow themselves become lost.
Someone would have to kidnap me, blindfold me and drop me off in the middle of nowhere in the dark in order for me to even get into a situation where I dont know where I am.
>>
>>784234

In many locations where I hike. If I did become lost. I know that if I at least just find a stream I can follow it down and down until eventually I will find civilization

None really. Worst I've been lost was trying to find a river access on a gravel road. But I have an excellent sense of direction and I can retrace my steps easily.

Makes me want to go to a state with super low population density like Alaska and just go for a month long trip. Just to try and get lost.

>great foothill hiking... widlife, along a pretty creek, great weather
>end up hiking about 3-4 miles in where it dead ends into some sheer cliffs
>okay, hike over, time to turn around and head back
>look back and realize that i can't pick out how I got here
>not too worried because it's essentially in a valley and I just have to turn around and follow the contour of the land and i'll be fine
>turns out, about a mile back i ended up following a game trail because the main trail ended up being overgrown from lack of upkeep
>mountain lion country, already seen bones and a fresh kill on the trail (not a huge worry, but cool nonetheless)
>head back and pick my way through the high brush that didn't help visibility
>get back to trail and am good to go
>hike back and all in all was a good day

Boring as hell I know, but when I hit that dead end and turned around and couldn't see where I had been walking and where the trail was, that was my first real feeling of being lost. Again, it was super minor and only about 10 minutes before I just gave up on finding the trail and just powered through some thickets until I got back on track. Still though, it was interesting to feel that and another reason why no matter where I go, I let someone know where I'm headed. If I had slipped on some sheer rock and snapped an ankle or cracked my head, I'm still over 3 miles from my car with no cell service on a trail I've never seen anyone else at.

>Decide to climb to the top to look for road
>Pop out on road, 30 yards in front of truck

I lost track of what altitude I was at, and didn't pay attention to the fact that hiking off the road was uphill right where I had parked, and downhill 30yds ahead of the truck. I thought I needed to be going downhill to get back, and it really fucked with me.

Quite a few people visiting Idaho and a few locals wander into the mountains for a short hike and are never seen again. It's not for pussies, nu males, city boys or easterners.

God damn I would never have the balls to run outside at night alone fight after hearing a woman scream, even with a minigun. What made you separate?

I mean that story is pretty pathetic and pussy shit. But I agree. Idaho is legit out. If you look above Boise, it's literally thousands of square miles of National Forest, BLM, Wilderness Areas, and National Recreation Areas. I'm gonna take it real easy the first month or so I'm there and kinda get used to things. My parents actually bought me one of these things for my birthday.

http://www.amazon.com/AG-008727-201-Explorer-Satellite-Communicator-Navigation/dp/B00I6EY01C

Reviews are solid? Idk how much I trust those things, but it's better than nothing and it'll be my first legit piece of electronic nav gear I've ever had. I'm from the southeast, so they're way far away and are interested in where I'm hiking, etc etc. Seems like a cool piece of equipment, and once I test it out I'll throw a detailed review on /out/.

Idaho native here, It's a pretty nioce place.

I'm in Moscow ID now, anyone know of good hiking trails and shit? I'm looking to get out with my roomate for a few weekends.
>>

Fraid not man, dunno much about north of Boise. Looks like there's a Saint Joe National Forest not far from you. Might be worth scopin out?

Everything else looks at least 50 miles away, but obviously dead east of you you're heading straight into millions of acres of NF land.

People in Idaho pretty cool? I still don't have a good feel for them. Coming from the South, no one really seems overly friendly, but that could just be people not doing the bullshit "everyone loves you and is super polite" facade that southerners have a tendency to do.

Most of Idaho has a strong "us and our own" mentality. They will help you if you ask but largely just live and let live
>>
>>786670
Where are you in AR? I'm from Hot Springs.
>>
>>787484

From Arkansas and moved up here a month ago. I just came back from solo backpacking in the Frank Church. I couldn't get any Idaho fags to come with because "too extreme".

>>787555
Where are you from originally? I just moved up here from AR

That's about what I figured. I've met some really nice people through AirBnB already, but I'm moving to an apartment complex and am kinda curious what the people will be like. Either way, pumped for the /out/ opportunities and lack of traffic and crime.
>>
>>791126
Note that the Live and Let Live mentality is common in much of the more rural West (ID, MT, WY, UT outside the Wasatch Front, eastern OR/WA, NV). It's not hard to integrate into communities but you need to show that you want to do so. It also helps that all of these states have a lot of federal land for going /out/

Pansy. I love going night/out/ with no flashlight. I've even gone on the new moon without a problem. Spoopiest thing that happened was I watched some loud ass 'possums that were blank white cross the trail.

Never got lost but:

>be naturalist intern

>head south on trail and walk west through forest to hit a road for bus departure
>kids bitching about bugs the whole time
>fuck up and leave checking the bearings the whole time
> veering NW the whole time
>see private property
>Idonfukedup.jpeg
>hit highway that intersects road I was supposed to hit
>keep kids calm and walk carefully down the road and report what happened to other groups
>get them back all tired from extra walking

Not terrible but I felt pretty stupid at the time, my coworkers just laughed about it though.

Why does /out/ have such a phobia of rednecks? The most these people are going to do is just fuck with you, because all you guys probably act like nervous kittens around them.

If any of this story is true, you could've gotten lost and possibly died just from overreacting. You need to get your /out/ mentality figured out.
