>>
No, you've just lowered the standards.
>>
>>769994
Not really.

Post yours though
>>
>>769987
The map is shit. I live in NM, and there is a lot of /out/ stuff to do here. You just have to be willing to go off of the beaten path. Hell, even staying on the beaten path, we beat most states on /out/ stuff. We have 87 listed mountain ranges for fuck's sake.
>>
>>770019
Its not like i made it shit tier. Get a hold of yourself. Do you really think its on the same level as Montana?
>>
>>770023

>>

East coast isnt that bad.

NJ had great terrain diversity.

And long island is a lot better than yellow tier, you just need a boat.
>>
>>769987
Hawaii is a 4 level /out/ state.

If I want to go feral pig hunting in Commiefornia with an AR, I'm restricted to pic related. If I really want to get away from people, you have 251 people per square mile, which makes it much more difficult. Where I live, it's 17 per square mile.

What's your problem with the south? We have lots of public land and comfortable weather for three seasons, four in the hills, and Mobile Bay is one of the richest marine habitats in the US.

Niggas don't even know that Alabama has the most freshwater fish species of any state and the second most amphibian species.

Louisiana should also be God-tier just for the coastal hunting and fishing.

>251 people per square mile
>>
>>770089
I wouldn't use anything in 5.56 for hunting large game, T B H. .270 and .300 Weatherby lay things down quite a bit harder.
>>
>>770092
Most feral pigs aren't hogzilla, and a .223 will kill them just fine. I've also seen plenty of meat ruined because people were convinced that they had to use the biggest rifle possible, including an entire quarter of an elk that was ruined by a 7mm mag because the hunter got a shot that was 50 yds. The meat between the ribs looked like blood soaked straw after that shit.
>>
>>770097
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zdhrm7jnyis

These two guys are getting very different results. AR guy takes like six shots to kill his first hog and most of the rest are also multiple shots, while his companion with the side-by-side is dropping them in place. I have had to shoot a large game animal twice exactly one time, out of the nearly 100 whitetails I've shot in addition to bigger game in Namibia and Colorado. That meat spoilage is the result of bullet composition as much as anything. If you sling a .254 Weatherby into an elk with a bullet that can't handle the velocity it'll do the same thing, but a .375 H&H wastes minimal meat with most bullets.
>>
>>770104
Wow its almost like shot placement matters
>>
>>770106
I just don't see the appeal of using a tool that allows you the least margin of error with that shot placement on light game and is basically inadequate for larger specimens of the same thing. I've shot a big hog through both lungs with a .270, proper bullet expansion and exit wound and everything and he still traveled three quarters of a mile. I doubt the results would have been superior with a smaller round.
>>
>>770104
I've watched an 11 year old kid drop an elk at 490 yards with a .243. Shot placement does matter.

As for the 7mm mag, the guy was using a bonded bullet. It would have been fine at 200 yards, but it was a 50 yard shot. I wound up with a 50ish yard shot with an '06 with a bullet that did fragment, and I only ruined about 20lbs of meat. She still dropped instantly.

Besides, your video shows a guy dropping a hog with a fucking handgun in one shot. The .223 has a lot more energy than most handguns. The guy with the AR just sucks.
>>
>>770123
I never said shot placement doesn't matter, but we all make mistakes and things sometimes don't happen the way we think they will. Yes, a .243 into the heart or spine will DRT an elk, but I think one would be kidding himself to say that he will never in a million years fail to make that shot just so.

The video still illustrates this, because the men are expecting moving hogs and unpredictable shots. The handgun kill is an exceptional case where the hog is still and he can take his time to place the shot well. The guy with the larger caliber weapon is simply better prepared for the circumstances of most of their shots because he doesn't NEED to be right in the bull's eye to kill his hogs.
>>
>>770056
yep be sure to tell everyone you know that so they never come here.

NY has shit gun laws and politics but the outdoor opportunities are some of the best in the country...

>St.Lawrence River/thousand islands access
>Adirondacks with thousands of ponds/lakes/waterways
>Catskill
>Fingerlakes -some 500+ ft deep with tons of lake trout
>Ontario/Erie lakes
>decent deer/turkey hunting

Other than Algonquin Provincial park in Canada you really can't find that kind of thing all in one state elsewhere in the Northeast, possibly the country. Alaska for sure, but you need a float plane to get to any of it. And western states like Montana, Colorado, California simply have nowhere near the access to, and diversity of, lakes and ponds that NY does. There are reasons people still build homes like pic related on some of the centerpiece lakes in NY like Lake Placid, Lake George, Champlain, etc.

I live in Wisconsin/Illinois.

illinois is absolute shit. I think that even Shawnee national forest sucks ass.

Wisconsin on the other hand, is fucking awesome. I think it's better than most of the south and the east. Most people in Wisconsin don't know about the South Western "Driftless Region". It's like rolling hills and valleys for 200 miles. It's actually considered a "geographic phenomenon". There are a ton of weird animals, waterfalls, and even a fucking desert in the driftless region. You all need to check it out.

And of course, northern wisconsin is pretty epic too.
>>
>>770609

Agreed. Hawaii map only circles popular islands. I'm kind of ok with that because maybe people will continue to not frequent Kauai as much.

Agree with most of this map, but You're putting the Gorge near the Dalles as the "Must SEE" in Oregon? Seriously?

It's like the least pretty place in the state. Maybe I'm reading that map wrong, but there's places in Central oregon, the coast, and the cascade range that are objectively must sees over the gorge.

Also is that Missouri you've got in there, cause it looks kinda like mark twain forest area and that area is clearly (if you're nearby) area.
>>
>>770709
>waterfalls
>highest point in state is like 800ft above sea level.

Yup.

Wisconsin is pretty nice for out, especially in regards to how unpopulated it is compared to the rest of the lake states, but it ain't "epic".
>>
>>769987
Lol.

Yes. Arkansas is almost worst.
Keep believing it.
>>
>>770839
Elevation in the nicolet national forest is like 1600 ft. in a lot of places.

It's not epic, but I think it is underrated. I've traveled around a good portion of the country, and of course nothing compares to the western Rockies. But Wisconsin is seriously underrated and there's many many hidden gems in the state. I think it's more fun than anything south or east.

Not yet honestly. I've been traveling the country for the past year and it was time for me to settle down and get back to being a normal, productive human being. Money was dwindling. Hotels and Airbnbs were getting a bit steep, so I just visited a few cities out west and Boise really seemed to stand out to me. So I got an apartment for a short lease and am about to start looking for work now that I'm a few weeks from moving in. I can float myself for a few months, but I've heard the job market is solid, if not great.

I have a sales background and I've looked at available jobs. Seem to be a lot of sales and marketing jobs which I could finagle my way into. When I was thinking about moving to SLC, I applied for a buncha jobs and my phone was absolutely blowing up all day for weeks. I was just testing the waters, wasn't even moving there. So even if boise is 1/10 of SLC job market, I should be fine.

though i see where the problem arises. too many californians get the idea that because their state's *geography* is superior it means *they* are superior. like how a porsche is objectively superior to a kia, but a porsche driver isn't automatically superior to a kia driver, but they act like they are.

of course, i AM superior, but that's an intrinsic trait that would be true regardless of birthplace, and not just because i'm from california.

With larger bullets and good shot placement, a 5.56/.223 is more than capable of putting down thin-skinned medium game like most deer and small to medium hogs.
In fact, I'd even go so far as to say that shot placement is far more critical than sheer caliber size, and a good vital organ hit by a gun that's "too small" will be MUCH more effective than a shot by a "proper" caliber that misses those vital organs.

Accordingly, the "best gun" for any hunter for any game is one they can shoot accurately whose bullets can reliably reach the vital organs of the target animal, hype and fashion be damned.

As for the magnums, unless you're going to be regularly taking shots from over 300 yards away, there's just no need for them. The extra velocity from all that powder being burned not only doesn't help penetration at short range, it actually hinders it. Conventional bullets just can't take going from 2000+mph down to zero in an instant-they splatter and fly apart rather than staying together enough to penetrate deeply. And the faster they are pushed, the worse it gets.

That said, some bonded bullets ARE designed to handle that, but at the cost of both lower-velocity performance and price. At the longer distances most magnums were designed to reach a lot of the bonded bullets won't expand much at all, and not nearly as well as more conventional bullets.

OP's map triggered me, so I made my own. Few things in the world are more annoying than a smug Californian. I've only done /out/ stuff in like 10 of the states though so this may not be entirely accurate.

N-new jersey has some okay reserves and trails, we just share most with NY and PA
>>
>>779707
I actually live in NJ but have been less than impressed my options. I've ended up going south to VA/WV for /out/ stuff since moving here. I'm curious if you have any recommendations since I don't know of any overnight hiking around here, just mediocre day hikes with no solitude because of the population density.
>>
>>779667
I think you're being mean to MN
>>
>>779720
Do a significant number people from outside the state travel to MN for outdoor stuff? If a state's outdoor resources are almost exclusively used by its residents, then I don't think it has much to offer relative to other states. With snowmobiling, lakes, and the relative isolation of the backcountry, I could see a case being made for MN/WI to be bumped up to yellow, but no more than that.

What's wrong with LA? There's plenty of /out/ shit to do here. I live in South LOuisiana and yea, it's a lot of swamps and shit but then that makes it fun, kind of like camping in vietnam.

>kneejerk backlash anti-californians are less annoying than smug californians

nah. it just makes you look bitter.
>>
I didnt want to get involved in the whole "California" topic here but I guess I have to.

A lot of people rank California low because of its population. Yes you guys have great beaches, Yosemite, ect but what kills it is population.
I have been to Yosemite three times and each time fucking sucked because it was over crowded. And its not just the major attractions either, there were a lot of people all over the trails. I finally said fuck it and started walking down a river bank and did so for 6 miles and in those six miles I was never alone, there was always someone within either sight or I could hear them.

This is not enjoyable and really kills it for a lot of people. I dont go into the outdoors to see/hear people. I know there are going to be people but when I cant find a spot by myself in Yosemite it just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

I could say the same thing about beaches.

Dont change it, I lived there for many years and it sucked.
The Dakotas get more people for their outdoors because of fishing and hunting. We have fishing too but its just too expensive for people from other states. I had a uncle come over once and we went fishing. A two day fishing license for me was 7$ while for my uncle it was almost 80$. Dont even get me started on the deer tags.

>go to one of the top tourist draws in the entire world
>complain about it being too crowded

and if you followed the major trails along the merced or tuolumne river i have no sympathy. and if you say it's any other river you're a liar

i just spent memorial fucking weekend camping in the mountains an hour south of yosemite and saw no one but my brother and my son for 24 hours. so solitude's there, you just suck at finding it.

Colorado is god tier /out/

>>
Make Arkansas, Virginia, and North Carolina a 2
>>
>>770709
How do you live in 2 states? You sound like a FIB trying to latch onto wisconsin even though you live in Gurnee.

Stay the fuck out of my state.

Florida is god tier if you like the water.
>>

Have you ever been to Rhode Island? Fantastic rocky coastline.

I do love those things, there's nowhere more peaceful on this earth than a mangrove forest.
>>
>>783029
i that case i'm glad you're where you're happy, but i believe you're in the minority in that opinion
>>

New York has the Hudson Valley, the Adirondacks the Catskills, the Rail Trail and stuff. I like it here. Wouldn't know how it compares to other places. But this is nice.

I live in Wisconsin, not WI/IL but 30 minutes from the border of the UP. I have lived in many parts of the state and I can assure you almost every person in Wisconsin, Iowa and Southern Minnesota is aware of the drifftless area. Doesn't make it any less beautiful though.
>>
>>783029
You better fight for it then, because there are a lot of people trying to fuck up the watershed there.
>>
Honestly every state is out tier if you try enough. Even the great plains is wonderful if you get out of your comfort zone in to vast expanses of prairie.

>Inb4 muh trees

I love trees too, but I takes a true outdoorsman to take on the great plains.
>>
>>779736
MN has some of the best paddling around. The bwca is very well preserved and respected by those that go there. I'm going up there for a week this summer and cannot wait.
>>
>>769987
PA is fucking great for /out/doors. So much woods and so beautiful. Rivers and lakes too.

>Hunting with lead bullets
>Ever
>>
>>783644
This. I'm from a Dixie state where lead will be legal for the next millenium, but I hunt with non-toxics because the science is pretty much in on lead content in carcasses and meat. I ain't eating that shit just to stick to to Obama.

Still practice with cheap lead ammo, but that's not illegal anywhere.
>>
>>769987
I'm from South Dakota, we should be green AT LEAST because obviously you've never been here.
>>
>>776680
It leaves out National Wildlife Refuges, and National/ State parks. Still far better than the other maps though.
>>

>montana and wyoming
>shit tier

wew. just kill yourself now
>>
>>779667
>MN/WI a 4

go fuck yourself anon. Apostle Islands and The Superior Hiking Trail alone put them into at least 2. Driftless area, northern highlands, north shore highlands, BWCA, lake of the woods, Voyageurs NP, infinite amount of fishing, millions and millions of acres of state/national forest. Garbage map from someone who doesn't know his own asshole from a hole in the ground.

Nigga u forget that Michigan exists? We're literally surrounded by Great Lakes, plus we have tons of lakes and rivers, 3 national forests, 8 state forests, and the sand dunes.

Ohio and West Virginia have plenty of /out/ shit to do.
