The dogs cant tell which direction you're traveling, so reversing course tricks them. Try to make your scent trail like a maze with lots of little dead ends. The dogs will want to run down every little path and will get confused when the trail stops. It will take the handlers time to get it all sorted out.

And remember you're trying to outsmart the handlers too. If youre walking down a valley and decide to head uphill, don't just start walking uphill. Double back on your own trail before going uphill. From your pursuers perspective they'll arrive at a Y in the scent with some dogs trying to go uphill and others down the valley. The handler has to chose and will probably assume that you just continued down the valley along your original direction of travel. Likewise if you come to a stream and decide to walk down it to hide your scent, cross the stream first then double back before traveling in the water. The chasers will think you just crossed the stream but cant figure out why the scent stopped a few hundred yards later.

First off. Its unlikely the dog is wrong, youll be unlikely to lose the dog.

The way you lose the dog is if you make the handler lose confidence in his dog. Think of it this way, losing the human factor given the exact circumstances, could you lose a pack of hunting wolves?

The infopic with the vaseline wont work. (Im thinking its subtle bait) Because by the time the hunter force ascertain that you covered yourself in vaseline theyll track you down easily because it will leave sign everwhere not to mention scent.

This is assuming you even have time to even employ deception tactics.

Which brings me to my last point, if you were to "assume" that you had time to prepare and premeditate on how to lose sniffer dogs, discussion would be counterproductive, it would but you time to plan and execute an escape. But unless you have extensive military training this is unlikely.

Some things that won't get them off the trail but can slow them down are
Walk off the trail about 50 feet, piss everywhere

Like literally on everything within 10 feet of you
Then go a ways through the not trail and get back on
That creates a scent pocket of you and they'll keep wanting to go back to it.

Pour gasoline on the ground behind you for a good 30+ feet and light it
The strong scent of the gasoline and fire will intimidate them

If it's dry and windy pour a line of gas about 10 feet wide perpendicular to The wind then light it and go up wind
Animals naturally fear fire and if there are people with them the new concern is put out the fire instead of catch you

Put your arm in its mouth and pull its tongue out. Dogs sweat through their tongue so they can't survive without it.

leave a piece of cloth sticking on a branch dose it with pepper. periodically dose your trail with pepper every few hundred meters in case they bring in fresh dogs.

you can't really, every dumb trick people have posted here so far, wont work. have an ex-girlfriend who use to train law enforcement dogs. the only time a dog loses the scent, is when you hop in a car, or dirtbike/ATV. or even a horse, if they aren't tracking the horse.

Dogs are the pre-likes of the radio. law enforcement best tool. your best bet is to have enough distance between you and the people following, and maintaining that distance, or raising the gap.

The french during WW2, learned that once Germans had dogs on them, it was pretty much GG for them.

you could also make traps and shit, if you've got enough supplies and time, to kill the dogs, modern day police will pull the dogs all together after one dies, or go x2 as slow, keeping the dogs closer/within sight.

Remember, killing a police k-9 is a felony, and will serve you a long jail time. as fucking stupid as that is.

i always wondered if some dogs are naturally immune to capsaicine wouldn't it be possible to use selective breeding to reinforce this trait in police dogs?

if the police dog is immune to pepper it would definitely give it an edge in many situations including tracking.
