Just start with a ceap gun from the pawn shop. You can probably get a 22 for 100 bucks. Or a shotgun for a little more.
To answer OP no I don't carry in national parks but i do always have a pistol in my truck. I respect their rules about carrying but I expect them to respect my castle doctrine rights inside my vehicle granted to me by the repub, er i mean state of Texas.

Nope. No reason to except maybe in Grizzly country
But then again I'm not as afraid and insecure as many posters on this board

Why?

Usually bring a .357. Chance of a bear or wolf attack is of course near zero, but meth-heads use the forests around here for cooking and stuff.

Be careful about older pawnshop guns. Some older firearms weren't made to handle modern loads. If you can't properly identify a firearm, take it to a gunsmith to have it inspected

You can get a brand new mossberg 500 for only 110 bucks, a great .22 rifle for 100, or a used .32 revolver in great condition for around 325. Maybe cheaper if you shop around. Not as expensive as one might think. My M&P .45 was 650 but that's a great gun, bought it new.
