It's a volcanic beach in Réunion Island, a French department located east of Madagascar so that's the Indian Ocean
God-tier place tb.h. The island is more about hiking and related activities (there are more cliffs than proper beaches and the whole island is basically mountains rising from the sea) but there are some pretty cool hidden beaches

There are several places like this in Europe, in France the westernmost place is the "Finistère", and the English have "Land's End" in Cornwall, which means the same thing

I've never been an ocean-faring people but I did have a glorious day in April where I recorded the surf up in Maine and it healed muh wounds bigtime. I still don't into /ocean/ but it's always nice to return to the sea sometimes.

It was something of a surfing destination until a few years back when shark attacks suddenly started happening all the time.

IIRC, St Leu, a classic lefthander hadn't been surfed in about a month due to shark attack fear and some guy finally said 'fuck it, i'm paddling out' and got attacked by a bull shark straight away.

A bunch of fatal attacks happened and eventually there was a surfing and swimming ban. Pretty fucked up.

Yeah, if I'm not wrong the attacks are rising because more and more fish are coming back closer to shore, so the sharks follow. It's safe to swim as long as you don't cross the coral reef that prevents sharks to reach the beach, but surfers have to go past it so...
But to be fair the island has always been prone to shark attacks, there wasn't many because people took precautions but there aren't many beaches 100% safe to begin with. All around the island there are beaches with warning signs.
I don't mind tb.h, I prefer the hiking side of the place and when I want to go to the beach the ones that are secure are good.

Op here, last year I went to Cape Verde on vacancies and while I was swimming a baby hammerhead shark like pic related came swim with us. It was amazing to see people freaking out, and I literally gave zero fucks and continued swimming. I wonder if there was a big mommy in the water too?
