There are probably a thousand reasons. And yes securing the rope is a huge part.

There are tons of face climbers that do it solo. Most don't live past 25.

well, there's roped soloing, but it's super slow, even more gear intensive, and not very safe for true mountaineering. a lot of people rope solo big walls, though (el cap, etc.)

depends. if you make friends with someone who has rope and pro only a couple hundred bucks (just need a harness, shoes and helmet, maybe a chalk bag, you can probably borrow an atc to start if they trust you to belay since you only need one per two people, unless you need to rap). if you're buying a whole solo/self belay set up you're looking at potentially a couple thousand or more instead.
