Hey /out/, looking at getting a new rigging knife. It will only be used for cutting rope .5"-3" in diameter, so it won't need a spike or a shackle ring. I was hoping that any of you who are mariners or just casuals could recommend something to me. I'd prefer fixed blade and something that is going to last me a while.

Swiss Army, SOG, and Gerber fanboys need not reply.

Pic related what I'm looking at right now.

tell me how will you cut the rope, while hanging, holding it in hands or on ground/other surface?if hanging,i recommend you a plain edge knife,if rope in hands, a serrated hawkbill will be great, and also a plain and a bit curved edge for a rope laying on ground/surface
>>
>>756083
Either get a Esee if you can afford it, amazing knives or a Ka-Bar BK7 if you cant afford the Esee
>>

Dumbass.

>>

retired marine engineer here

every AB and Bosun I've sailed with has carried a stainless Hulafors/ Mora type knife.

common theme was to sharpen them with a file to leave the edges raggy to cut rope, and grind the tip flat for prying paint can lid and general safety.

never say any tacticool shit on deck, or in my engineroom

Not sure why you took the time typing that out. Anon obviously doesn't need a useful tool, he wants a funky serrated blade to add to his collection. It will be an exciting challenge to sharpen with his fine Japanese stones.

Just get the SpyderShill OP.
>>
I don't know if this thread is retarded on purpose or what, OP is just crying about everything and everyone else is just calling everything but their special butterfly knives shitty.

Are you all being fucking retarded on purpose?
>>
>>757302
Only decent post in the thread.

That is what they used in the navy in WW2 for cutting rope.

A classic ka bar is the same type, I'd go for it.
>>

Thank you based eng. I tried Mora while I was fishing on a dragger but I found they never cut through synthetic lines that well. Although, you can't really beat the price.

Also merchant, or navy?
>>
>>757344
I don't really need it to double as a Jap stabber, but if I did then that would be my choice.

I've just had a look and Mora actually make a serrated, blunt tipped stainless 'rescue' knife

Should fit the bill well I'd have thought?

Also Merchant Navy, best years of my life.

Why serrations?
A straight edge is better. Serrations get choked up on rope.
The only advantage serrations have is that they still 'cut' when dull.

Stainless helps, but you don't actually need it.
A good wipe down with oil every day before bed and your blade will never rust.
Stainless steels will require the same treatment, so in the end it doesn't matter.

The most important things are:
Good handle. Doesn't have to be rubber, but it needs to fit your hand
Good sheath. So it doesn't fall out.
Wide, thin ground sheepsfoot type blade. So you don't stab yourself and it doesn't bind in thick rope.

J. Nowill of Sheffield makes a good one for about £40
So do Otter Messer, and Linder in Germany.

If you want cheap, you can get a "hacking knife" (pictured)
Its the same shape as most rigging knives, comes with a leather handle. But the edge is a bit thick. You can file it down easy though.
Only costs £10 or something like that.

If you want to spend less than £5, get a used Old Hickory butcher knife, then cut down the blade to the proper shape.

Hey; I just wanted to come and tell you I was wrong about this; my Bivy broke on my recently; thankfully before I was doing climbing. I no longer feel I can safely recommend the products I mentioned to you. God bless you in your efforts to find something that works!

Care to explain the circumstances when it broke?
