Interested in the dogs /Out/ keeps. As a hunter I keep working Jack Russels
>>
>>753993
I have 3 lurchers that I use for deer hunting
>>
>Folks down the street keep Jack Russell in their front yard sometimes.
>Barks his head off at me as I walk past. Every time.
>One day I see the front gate is open, he's out.
>He's walking towards me, is there going to be trouble?
>Approaches me as if to say "Hey, I know you m8." Naturally falls into heel beside me, walking home.

Norwegian elk hound, mixed with dunno what.

She is such a big baby, so lovable...which is good, cause the place she was rescued from was bad. Previous owner broke her leg, cracked her skull.

I've got a rat terrier mix that randomly showed up at my parent's house a few years ago when he was a puppy. He's a really good squirrel dog, all I have to do is walk through the woods with a .22lr or a 12ga shotgun and wait for him to tree one and start barking. He's also helped me trail deer and pigs that I've shot but he is utterly useless when trying to hunt rabbits. He's really quiet and well behaved most of the time, I take him with me pretty much everywhere I can.

Solid dog, how long did it take you to train him to track blood trails?
>>
>>754392
Well what really helped was taking him along when I went deer / pig hunting. I'd taken him squirrel hunting a lot beforehand so he knew what a gun was and was used to chasing a wounded squirrel or locating a dead one after I shot. Once he actually saw a pig get shot, run off a ways, and die then he knew what was up and it was pretty easy to get him to follow a blood trail after that. He's not as good as a trained scent-hound but he's found maybe 4 deer and pigs for me over the last couple of hunting seasons, he just has a hard time staying on the right trail if there were a bunch of animals there when I made the shot.

I would post my hunting dog but sadly she passed away from a fight with a bear over my moose hunt. She was a good dog and she will be missed. She was a Husky German Shepherd Mix very loyal and very good hunting dog in my honest opinion. Natiy was her name by the way (Nat-E if you can't say it right)

I've got a doggo and this still mystifies me. There's lots of different barks other than defensive or aggressive barks, and I know that when he barks behind the fence it doesn't mean that he wants to be aggressive to whoever he's barking at, but the second they get past that fence the switch just flips off, and he's coolguy 2.0, no barking at all.

Yeah, I got pretty lucky with him. Like I said, he just showed up at my my parent's place one day. I was helping my dad work on a tractor, walked around the corner of his shop and this little guy was back there just trotting along. He almost froze and almost bolted when he saw me but I crouched down and called him over and he cautiously approached me. He had no collar and was pretty skinny so we gave him a little food and left him outside thinking he'd go back home or something but he never did. I took him to the vet a few days later to check for a chip and he didn't have one so we ended up keeping him.

I'm glad he didn't turn out to be an annoying little yappy shit like a lot of small dogs are.

>I'm glad he didn't turn out to be an annoying little yappy shit like a lot of small dogs are.

Small dogs aren't inherently yappy, only the ones who haven't been socialized or exercised properly. Idiots get small dogs and think "oh they're small so they won't need much exercise" when, if anything, the opposite is true.

Dogs' behaviour is significantly more about nurture than nature than people think.

There's a difference between taking a dog fishing and a dog ruining your fishing, though. Doges that aren't hyperactive little shits will usually just nap in the sun or sniff around while steering clear of where you're fishing.

(the guy you replied to) I'm getting a beagle mix later this week who showed up in my yard a while ago. He hung out all day (I work from home sometimes) and was full of energy and cute. Eventually we found his people down the road who didn't want him.

Long story short, I want him to be like your dog. I hunt hogs, squirrels and rabbits and would love a good hunting buddy. Any tips or suggestions?
>>
okay this not my dogus .. but .. yeah !
>>
>>762738
That's some gnarly brindle. He/she looks like fire in that light. I wish my staffie had turned out bigger but he's an adorable little baby dog, so I'll take it.
>>
>>762791
Well I actually had a beagle growing up, he was a great dog. They're a true scent hound so you probably won't have much luck hunting squirrels with him but they're pretty much the go-to breed for rabbit hunting, they'll follow a trail and bay for hours. For rabbit hunting you'll want to take the dog out, let him get on a trail, and then just try to get ahead of the dog and rabbit and let the dog run the rabbit right by you. They won't normally push the rabbit too hard and just maintain a slow and steady pace while trailing so the rabbits respond by running a ways and then hiding in some bushes or something until they hear the dog getting close again and then they'll run off a ways to another hiding spot and that just repeats until the dog gives up. The rabbit will pretty much just make a big loop (they won't leave "their territory" unless they feel REALLY pressured) and a good beagle will be able to trail a rabbit around that loop 2-3 times. If you miss your chance to shoot the first time then you can wait for a while and the dog should run the rabbit back around eventually.

I'm not sure how to really train a dog to follow the trail of a wounded animal, I just got lucky when my dog picked up on it on his own.

My beagle knew what a gun was and would get really excited when I grabbed a .22 and started heading out the door because he knew it was hunting time and he was ALL about hunting. The beagle was also good about finding raccoons, possums, and skunks while we were tramping through the woods so keep that in mind. Look up some good skunk-spray remedies and keep the supplies on hand. We always kept some large cans of tomato juice and had another recipe that used hydrogen peroxide so we also kept several large jugs of peroxide handy.
>>
>>762791
>>762843
also, make sure that the collar you put on the dog is loose enough to slip off over its head. Beagles will follow an animal into some really gnarly brushy areas and will get their collar hung up a lot. If the collar is too tight then they can easily get hung up and die but if it's loose enough then they can back out and pull it off without any harm done. We went through 2-3 collars a year on my beagle.

Coat dog legs in vaseline.

>PROTIP snakes won't bite anything covered in a thick layer of vaseline
>>
>>762713
>bull

Generally, bulldogs and their various crosses are dangerous - often banned breeds, and rightfully so. This is often refuted by owners, with great butthurt and rage, but still true nonetheless.

It's partly due to the dogs nature (bulls as a breed are meant for aggression and fighting) partly due to upbringing - as in, rarely are they properly trained, since the type of people who seek out and choose such dogs as pets are generally not the type of people who should have pets.
>>
>>762990
Pretty much all working dogs are selected for aggression and prey drive. Even sniffer dogs.

Fighting dog breeds are selected for aggression towards other dogs, not their owners. A fighting dog that will snap at its owner is badly bred.

Staffies, for instance, are notoriously shitty guard dogs. You can kidnap them no problem so they are at risk of being abducted for dog fighting purposes.
>>
>>763098
One of my friend's parents had a couple of pit bulls, a male and a female, along with several other dogs. Those pits were the sweetest dogs you ever saw around people, even people they'd never seen before. The male was never aggressive towards anything as far as I knew but the female had a jealous streak and would destroy any of their other dogs if anyone was petting them or otherwise paying attention to them. She killed at least 3 of their other dogs over the years... It really put a damper on get-togethers out there when everyone's just drinking and having a good time visiting with each other and then you see a dog get ripped to shreds right in front of you by a much larger and more powerful dog.
>>
>>762990
Growing up, everyone always said how aggressive bulls were. Then I was around a few and they were the sweetest dogs, both to each other and their fellow dogs.

Mine are similarly well behaved. The little one is very submissive and obeys commands very well. He gets a little more rough with puppies during play than we'd like, but we don't get much opportunity to work on it.

The deaf one has obviously been a little harder to train. He obeys gestures pretty well, but he is still a little territorial of his food. We've only had him six months, but we think he might be about two years old.

We've never seen any hint of real aggression from either dog, toward people or other dogs. I've owned four dogs prior to these, and these bulls are the most chill dogs I or my family have had.

But anecdotal evidence, so idk.

Cool thanks for the info. I picked up some books at the library and can finish at least one before I pick him up. The rabbit loop things is good to know. I'm guessing he'll have to be around when I shoot my next hog to get him going on that, which makes sense. At the least sniff a dead bloody hog.

>also good at finding raccoons, possums and skunks
all fine with me! I've never seen/smelled a skunk around so we'll see.

I currently have an old gun shy dog that I could never seem to get to obey me when I have a gun in my hands... he was adopted from a neglectful/abusive family but is a good dog now. I have a Field Golden that looks like this. We have thoughts of teaching her to flush game but we don't really know how to train her to do that. We've taken her Grouse hunting but she goes a little to far ahead of us for us to shoot the game she flushes. Bitch managed to find some human feces and roll in it while we were out hiking a trail. She went Pheasant hunting once but acted weird and aloof.

Kinda want to get a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever to be a buddy for her. They're so darn cute.
>>
>>764134
She dug up a geocache?
>>
>>764136
New to /out/ so I don't know if this a meme but no she literally found some human poop/shit on the side of the trail and rolled in it. When she came up to us she had toilet paper and everything stuck on her fur. She rubbed up against our pants and got human shit on our pants as well. We had her go swimming in the lake (it was 45 F and she had no qualms chasing sticks into the lake) and tried rubbing her down with towels but she smelled terrible the rest of the trip.

Still <3 her and she sleeps in my bed every night.

I vaguely remember reading that you want your dog to be around two years or older before you start taking them on hikes. I think it has something to do with their bones growing and forming, but I might be pulling all of this out of my ass.

Statistics on pit bull attacks are notoriously poorly documented and subject to sampling bias. In fact, most studies on the subject fucking look at media reports which is a horrible sampling technique as pit bull attacks, with their controversial nature, make for much better news stories than, say, rottweiler attacks.

In areas where bites are recorded by breed by the police and not the media, such as pic related, pits are not particularly prone to aggression. You may argue that pit bulls may be particularly harmful when they do bite thanks to their strong jaws and molar-grinding, but the idea that pits are more aggressive than your average dog is a pretty boldface lie, More dangerous when they do bite? Probably. But then again, probably not any more dangerous than say a bull mastiff or a rottweiler.
>>
>>764205
It's true with large breeds. You can get away with 1- 1 1/2 with normal sized and small. I'd still take it easy until two as an out dog with bad joints is no fun at all.
>>
>>763899
She's five. I've been told the muzzle is just genetics, but I personally think it's due to stress from being a street dog in Croatia. She had it when we got her.

Use the time until your pupper is old enough to train her how to act while /out.

Border collies are insanely clever, so she'll pick stuff up really easily. Basic things like come, sit, stay, drop for a start but then more advanced stuff like 'backup' in case there's danger ahead, 'get behind', 'freeze' and maximum roaming distance.

One tip as well, give her an /out/ blanket of some sort and train her to sleep on that when you're outside. That'll keep her off the cold ground, but also make it easy for her to understand whether you want her to sleep in your tent, near the fire, or whatever.
>>
>>764145
>she sleeps in my bed every night.

This will make it harder to train her. Sleeping and eating are two ways in which dogs determine hierarchy. I know I'm going to get deluged with anecdotal evidence to the contrary, and you can certainly still train dogs that sleep with you, but if you really want them to train well then they have to have very clear boundaries, and they have to know that you are the master.

You can still be kind to them of course but I would recommend eating before her, not giving her human food scraps (only dedicated dog food), and not letting her on your bed/couch.

But if all you really want is a pet then go for it.

When she went pheasant hunting and acted aloof it was probably the instincts kicking in. As for Grouse hunting train her to have a maximum roam distance so she doesnt pointlessly flush out of the range of the guns.
>>
>>764920
I know a lot of people who run hog dogs here in TX. One guy I know has 13 dogs and at any given time at least 1/2 of those are too cut up to take out hunting (he runs dogs pretty much every weekend). It's pretty insane the damage a hog can do to a dog. I've been at the vet's office when guys bring in a hog dog that's been ripped to shreds, not a pretty sight... The dogs live for the hunt though, it's not like the guys have to force them to do it. Most people around here use pits as catch dogs and will use any dog that works for finding and flushing the pigs.
>>
>>764859
Holy shit. Even your criticisms are uninformed. I'll help you out. What you're supposed to be complaining about is selection bias, not sample size. You can have a town of 50 thousand dogs and that would be a huge sample but since it's not selected at random, it could be subject to other unobservable biases.

And now that I've given you a hand, let me dismiss that point by simply reiterating what I've already said which is that the only way a bias would emerge is if dogs in that county behave different than dogs in the other parts of hte world. In order for you to argue the stats are bunk, you have to believe that dogs do not behave roughly the same across the country. And hte problem with you arguing that is that it completely conflicts with your bigger argument which is that pit bulls are inherently more aggressive. Basically, anon, you can argue that records in one part of the country are a bad indicator of dogs for the whole country, or you can argue that these dogs are genetically more violent, but you cannot argue both as the latter gives validity to the former.
>>
>>764988
ok
>>
>>764658

No, it's not too late. But you should establish a clear set of expectations and routine and stick with it forever to avoid confusing her.

Be aware as well that psychologically (with humans as well as dogs) even ONE exception to a rule will have more impact than following a rule 100 times. So if you think 'oh it's cold I'll let her sleep in my bed but just for tonight' then for a long, long time after she will expect to sleep in your bed, and will push you to let her and will expect you to cave.

Some idiots say that this is 'being mean' but it's actually kinder to the dog as they thrive on clear boundaries. They get anxious when they are unsure of their social position in the pack, and are happier and more responsive when they know that you are the leader, and they must follow.

With my pupper, he has never slept in my bed or been fed from my plate from day one. This means that I can leave a full plate of food on the coffee table and he won't touch it, because he knows it's not for him. That means he is less stressed as he knows the rules and doesn't get in trouble, and I don't get stressed because I know I can trust him around food. I still give him heaps of affection, but leadership must come first.

Sorry I wasn't clear , the Jack Brussels flip but they run , I just think it's funny they get protective of my house when I get home. Meet them on the street and they are friendly little fuckers. Also not my first German shepherd , my dad was a dog trainer and handler for a security company when I was a kid so I grew up around them. my last shepherd passed three years ago and I thought it was time I got a new buddy.
Got a sable coloured , straight backed shepherd , no visible defects , mother and father both big , strong and confident dogs . Little pupper is already house trained , is good on the sit and down but not great at come or heel yet , he's only ten weeks tho so it a a long road ahead with his training

So I had to euthanize my doggy over the weekend, she had cancer. Probably not gonna get another dog for a month or two, just to let the dust settle.

What is a good breed? She was a husky/german shepherd/lab mix, she was fun and playful but not the most cooperative. I've been thinking about getting a Caucasian Shepherd, they're super cute and fairly hardy. However, they're not exactly a common dog in NC, so I don't think that'll work out. What's a good /out/ breed that's easy to train, is smart and cute, and not super rare?

My mum wants to get a rotweiller, which I absolutely hate. One of our first dogs was a rotty and he was batshit. Before that we had a belgian shepherd, who had a grass allergy so we couldn't keep her when we moved. Other breeds she wants is a pitbull or a corgi. I don't really know what she's looking for in a dog other than four legs and a tail tbqh, but I know that I want a reliable companion. I'm not that great with people, and my dog was an emotional support for me. I wouldn't want a dog that I couldn't bond with, either because it's too violent and scary like a rotty or a pitbull, or bc it's a cunty little bitch dog like a corgi. My stepcousin has a chihuahua and it's the most aggressive little shit I've ever met, and I get the feeling that's p common with smaller dogs.
>>

Sorry about your doggo fellow NC friend.

I've seen one chihuahua before that was astonishingly well behaved. I didn't realize how cute they can be when there not being little shits. Still wouldn't get a small dog, personally.

I'm the guy who posted the golden earlier in the thread. She is the sweetest dog I've ever seen and probably the only living creature that is always, always happy to see me. Every morning I feel so guilty going to work because she is sad when I leave. I know it's a meme dog but my vote is for the golden.

Word of caution though, my golden has cancer. It's common in the breed. Might want to avoid if you don't want to deal with the same thing again.

I don't think I can go through cancer with another dog, at least not for a few decades. I'm sorry to hear about your dog, hopefully she has a good life for however long she has left. If you decide to get her put down, seriously consider not being present when they do it. I chose to be there, and the last thing she did before going to sleep was look me in the eyes with concern, not because she was scared but because I was crying. I'm glad I could be there for her, but holy fuck it hurt so much feeling like I was betraying my best dog friend

I got this guy almost a year ago, and I take him hiking every chance I get. He only listens when he wants to though, so I can rarely let him off the leash. inb4 "le train your dog". He came from a shelter and has a mind of his own. The people at the shelter said he was a stray, so who knows how long he was on his own for or how many owners he's had. He has really bad separation anxiety as well.
>>
>>777217

Just because a dog is from a shelter doesn't mean that they magically can't be trained. Yes, it has a "mind of its own" which can be trained.
>>
>>777347
I have trained him in quite a few things, it's just that sometimes he gets easily distracted or won't listen. Other times he's good and will respond. Every time we leave the house together, I make him sit and stay before I put his harness and leash on. I've been doing this since the day I got him, and it still takes 5 minutes or more to get him to calm down and listen. I think he has ADD. I've had other shelter dogs that were immediately loyal and listened to me with very little training. This guy just had a different life beforehand, so I think that's why he doesn't listen well.
>>
>>777538

How old is he now vs when you got him?
>>
>>777217
Did you get this dog in southern Pennsylvania or West Virginia? Looks exactly like my dog. Got him from some crazy woman out in the middle of nowhere and had to choose between him and his brother. Always wondered what happened to the other dog considering the woman was a piece f shit and just abandoning the dog on the side of the road somewhere seemed likely for her.

I want to get a dog so bad, but living in the dorms has prevented me so far, hopefully though I can next year when I live off campus. I would really like to either get a wolfhound (swede or norge) or a Shiba Inu meme dog. I guess if I cannot afford either when they become avaiable I'll just get a healthy dog from the humane society. As of now my parents have two dogs I could take camping and hiking. One is a runt Golden and the other is a Bernese Mountain dog with autism (pictured).

old doggo died very suddenly a couple months back. She wasn't quite as excited about going outdoors as she used to be, but thought she was just starting to get old. Turned out she had really aggressive cancer.

Got a new pupper a couple weeks back though, cause I hate being with a doggo companion. Gonna have to teach him all about the outdoors as he was previously a city stray.

I'm loving the amount of rescued dogs ITT.
Pic isn't mine but a dog I fostered for a while. She was an outdoor only dog that wasn't fixed, and the previous owners wondered why she kept getting pregnant. Whoever says an old dog can't learn new tricks needs to be shot. This old girl learned shit so fast.

I would first work on the drop it and leave it command, and recall too if it isn't already very reliable. I could recommend books but not until tomorrow. The autistic lady, kikopup, on YouTube may have good info on that as well but I'm not sure.

I wanted to say hairless dogs then I remembered they are prone to skin cancer and need sun screen. Sighthounds may be a good option but they will never be trusted off leash. A pitbull type dog maybe, just because they are so tenacious and handle much more than most other dogs. Stay away from dogs with a lot of white in areas that will see a lot of sun. A dog should never be left outdoors in extreme heat really, but when outside and it is that hot, make sure the dog has access to shade and water, maybe even a kiddie pool, and don't work them too hard.

There are also these dogs, I believe called Pariah dogs, that are mutts from Africa basically that live outdoors. They would definitely be accustomed to heat. There are some rescues in the US that take dogs from there and adopt them out across the states, but they are still rare.

Unless they do it purely to turn a profit by marketing it as "boutique feral dog rescue" to yuppies with more money than sense, then this is an amazingly misguided appropriation of resources.

I have a black lab / blue heeler mix, so she's smaller (not full lab size) and a great out dog, and she doesn't seem to shed very much. Though that might just be in reference to my german shepherd dog that is shedding (like crazy right now), but the black lab/blue heeler mix would require minimal brushing to remain fuzz free. She loves swimming and running after scent trails and stuff. Very nice outdoor puppy dog.

Pic related is my dug. Almost a year old collie. She loves being out, just started taking her hillwalking. Got her from a farm (she's timid and no interest in sheep) so shes' down with the outdoors, other dogs and animals, etc, but gets freaked out by random human stuff - engines mostly, strimmers and tools, but random stuff too - shes' deathly afraid of my nalgene water bottle.

Going to start taking her camping this winter once I've got her a bit better trained.

I have an out related dog story for you all

>2 years ago around Tobermory Ontario
>walking 2 dogs a few miles out in the forest
>I've hiked this route countless times so I'm not very careful
>DOG GETS BIT BY 2 GOD DAMN BABY RATTLE SNAKES ON THE SAME LEG
>dog runs into bushes (I assume because he thinks he's dying)
>it takes me a good 10 min to get him out
>90 pound dog refuses to walk
>forced to carry him a few miles back to cottage
>closest vet is an hour away
>vet basically just gives him benadryl and sends us on our way
>dog's leg swells up to about 6 times its normal size
>smells like hell and leaks puss for a week or two
>he refuses to walk for a week and just shits and pees himself
>he moans all the time unless someone is laying with him comforting him

Eventually he got better but his leg has never been the same since. You can tell it's stiff for him and the hair on that leg is both softer and darker then all his other hair

Walk her on a leash for a start. The two most important commands for me were "leave it" to get it to stay on the trail and "come here". Dont get me wrong, it took a fair while to retrain my hunting companion from a family pet but in the end it was well worth it

>dingoes are exactly the same as coyotes and wolves
>that's why chihuahuas are used as drug dogs just as much as german shepherds
>implying I was pushing for a purebreed and not just a dog that is predominantly one breed
>don't worry about the dog goy just adopt a pit bull mutt
My last dog was a mutt, but she expressed the physical and behavioural characteristics of her primary breeds of german shepherd husky and lab. I want a dog that is primarily descended from caucasian mountain dogs but maybe some newfie or spitz or husky in there somewhere. The problem isn't distinguishing between separate breeds or even wanting a dog that is as purebred as you can find, it's about genetic drift.

look at europeans, they're diverse amongst themselves enough for there to be genetic diversity, but as a group they are unique enough to be grouped into a single race, like asians or africans. However, when you have a group like the jews who keep very much to themselves you ended up with inbreeding issues and a sickly population.

Think of it like races being the same as a kind of dog, like a herding dog or a hunting dog or a companion dog or whatever. Breeds would be comparable to the different kinds of dogs in those groups. Like you have white as a race, with subsets like germanic or eastern european or anglo saxon. They're similar in terms of general build, temperament, etc but different enough to still be distinct from one another. Likewise you have hunting dogs, with subsets like munsterlanders or golden retrievers or spaniels. Similar builds and temperaments, but different enough to be distinct from on another.

my sister pushes for the whole "just get a dog lol are dogs are the same with no differences u bigot" bullshit. Dog breeds or breed groups have similar characteristics and if you want a dog it makes sense to look for a dog that suits your needs. That's where breeds come in.
>>
>>794372
>Hurr
>Durr
>Hurrdurr

Obviously if you're just looking for a companion then a mutt is fine but if you're looking for certain characteristics then you need to get more specific and get your hands on them early in their life or neither you nor the dog will have a good time.

More people need to neuter their goddamn animals, not adopt mutts.
