As for places in out I recommend the Djurdjura range, a series of mountains that stay snow for like 9 month per year. each mountain is from 2000 to 2300 meters. there are some tree colonies but it's mostly grassland with evergreen bushes. and literally no one lives there.
another place is the Hoggar, which is in the Sahara. I know people hate deserts but that place has more life than the rest of the desert. there are cheetahs there too!. it has the highest peak in Algeria (3000 m) and the sky in night is way too clear.
there are also forests like Chrea and Chelia which are coniferous forests which no one really inhabits and are full of life and thigns that you can hunt (Fallow deer, Wild boar). I'm currently planning to go on an Atlas hike from Tunisia to Morocco but it's not too soon

Anything I eat while hiking shouldn't be too heavy for your stomach. but when I take a rest I usually eat some type of white meat in a stewish style cooked in a copper pot (Rabbit with carrots + potatoes) and drink light juice (Pomegranate). Our culture promotes light amount of eating so I'd recommend that.

About bugs, the only threat there is are scorpions and some spiders. Mosquito appear in humid areas but not too often. I say hammocking is great since you're putting yourself away from the scorpions

If you're talking about Numidians most of them lived near lakes rather than near sea so they can live in a less humid area. water was near them, but they used to filter it with some sort of pipe. Fire was easy to get since most of the wood was dry. As to utensils they had limited visible resources to make some so they had to use their hands often. Their houses were made out of oak/pine wood or some mud+Hashish meixture which acts like cement, they also made tents from deer and lion skin. most of the Numidians hunted but farmed some animals like sheep and Ostrich.

OP, what are the people in those small towns like? I know in the US, country town people are usually friendly, but xenophobic. Is that the case with Algeria? I'm guessing it is, since they probably don't see a lot of tourists. It's a place that I'd love to explore, as long as the locals are at least indifferent towards white people.

I'd love to go to Algeria, OP; in fact I'm pretty sure you've answered some of my questions in other threads. It's expensive for an American to get a tourist visa, though, and Morocco is so easy to get into. Maybe I'll go in 10 years when the political climate makes it possible to explore the desert freely.

I hope one day to visit every Saharan country. It ain't easy with an American passport.

Not in that case, obviously with all the immigration problems, refugees, ISIS and terrorist attacks linked to Islam etc, racism is rising. But you won't get attacked or anything just because you are Algerian, especially since you'd be just a tourist and not a permanent resident.
