Mushrooms, berries, common weeds beach foraging.

I'm going to be hiking the PCT this year, so can we get a couple regular sc/out/s to screencap and repost this as necessary?

There are no poisonous crown berries (like blueberries or huckleberries), there are no poisonous compound berries (like raspberries or blackberries), there are no poisonous fruits that look like strawberries. All parts of all grasses (like rice or maize) are edible, all parts of all brassicas (like broccoli or ocra) are edible (Brassicas all have four long sepals, two short sepals, and four petals. All saltwater seaweeds are edible).

The meat of all freshwater fish, fur-bearing mammals and snakes are all edible.

This is all specifically for north America, but largely accurate globally. There is one poisonous compound berry that exists only in south America, and one poisonous snake in Asia (?).
>>
I honestly don't understand how people started eating mushrooms in the first place since you apparently need to be an expert and take a spore print to safely identify a mushroom.
>>
>>750931
But there are other poisonous berries to be aware of? Or properties to help decide if a plant is poisonous or not. Like I know the rub on wrist or whatever and then if it doesn't burn or irritate rest on lip for a while and so on but like. Idk. White sticky substances usually mean not edible...? (Idk if that's true)

Edible plants in my area of central California.

Miners lettuce
Wood sorel
Dock
Milk thistle
Stinging nettle
Gooseberry
Currents
Cheese weed
Pine needles (for tea only)

These grow everywhere. Learn them and you can pretty much survive off foraging durning spring and fall seasons.
>>
>>750934
search for a list of just the ones that grow in your area, and narrow it to just the ones that are edible

get detailed info on just those species, and only look for those species

Anyone else not affected by poison oak/ivy? It does not irritate me any more than an apple leaf or oak leaf(assuming its not on a flag on a 4chan post)
>>
>>752176
Be careful around it anyway. As you get older you can develop a reaction to it. Not only that, but if you've handled it, you can get it all over objects other people who do react to it will touch, giving them the rash. Some people have to be hospitalized for it.

>tfw your college roomie did laundry after weedeating a field of poison ivy and your clothes were the next in the washer
>>
>>752176
I imagine an immunity to poison oak is technically possible though ridiculously improbable. I've done so much research into this to discover that not even native Americans were immune to poison oak.

Why did I do all this research on it? Because I'm dangerous allergic to the god damn fucking shit! Fuck you anon, I hate you and want your blood!
>>
>>752246
I know a lot of people that are not affected by it. I also know 1 friend who was never allergic to it but as she aged became allergic to it. My grandmother was never allergic and would routinely rip the stuff out by hand.
>>
>>752249
http://www.corbamtb.com/resources/poisonoak.shtml

"There are two types of people, those who get poison oak, and those who are going to get it."

There are people's who allergic reaction is slight or even barely noticeable but that defence does not last as no one is immune to poison oak, and the reactions grows worst with repeated exposure.

Your grandma may have been a mutant m8.
>>
>>752176

I've had significantly reduced reactions in my adulthood. I had it once very bad as a child and had to be hospitalized and then took an experimental vaccine while doing trail clearing work. Since those two events I've never gotten worse than slight irritation, not that I wipe my ass with the leaves or anything, maybe I've just gotten better at avoiding it.
>>
>>752294
>experimental vaccine
Wtf?

Avoiding it is my thing. I can see that shit from a mile away by now, even after it looses its leaves in late autumn. The bare stems still contain oil.

Watching my awkward as duck, dip, dodge, and duck around overgrown trails while avoiding that shit is probably pretty entertaining.

sorry guys I only get on at night for a few hours, so late reply and all.
I live in Kissimmee Florida. last two years have been pretty crappy on the dewberry front. I'm generally surprised that they are already flowering and doing so good this early on myself, musta been our SUPER HARSH winter we had this year, they are waking up early. ;)

>>751398
dewberries are blackberries. difference between the two is dewberries are more grown cover, while blackberries are more bush like, and I believe the berries on dewberries are smaller, but also the berry itself has smaller seeds/not as many as your store bought blackberry.

but my local 'wild' berries tend to climb a bit, normally up other bushes, to reach the sunlight, then other berry bushes climb up those, so they mostly come up to knee/thigh high on myself. I suppose they COULD be blackberries from somewhere else/birds. but the berries have always been so small and lacking of seeds, I've personally identified them as dewberries.

I'll be /out/ tomorrow possibly, hopefully my phones replacement screen comes in around noon, so I can head /out/ around 4PM so its not so hot. and get some pictures.

It was something technu was going to put out. We all got free technu and the option to take a shot in the arm to vaccinate us and participate in a case study. I was a minor at the time, but my dad signed us both up. Looks like it never made it to market.

>>
>>751345
Dunno about your locale, but here in Indiana there are a few other delicious mushrooms that grow in the sand season as morels. Off the top of my head, there are beefhearts (brown, wrinkly, no discernible stem), elephant ears (brown or grey, look like the fried dough treat commonly found at county fairs), and peckerheads (kinda look like yellow morels, but with a short cap and long stem). Oh, and if you're into flipping cow patties, there may be some magical fungi about.
>>
>>752285
There are a lot of people around where I live that are completely immune. I had a friend who is completely immune to it. He could weedeat that shit, pull it out by hand, etc and never get anything from it. Though, he had a really bad habit of giving it to everyone else.
>>
>>751395
This is pretty much my forage list. Except the maple nuts.
>>
>>752176
I grew up in Missouri, and was a real /out/ kid. Never had it. Drove the rest of my family nuts since you can wave a poison ivy leaf at them from 20 ft. away and they'll break out.

Of course, I've also never had chicken pox, broken a bone, still have my tonsils, still have my appendix, and never had blisters on my feet although I can safely say that I've hiked over 1,000 miles in my life. (I count 'hike' as being with a pack that's at least 10 pounds.)

Looking back, I realize that I've either gotten really lucky in the genetic lottery or have been insanely lucky to escape the many, many dangerous situations I've been in with only laughably minor injuries.

I'm starting to get scared something horrible is going to happen the next time I go /out/...
>>
>>752087
Though it's not super common, gooseberry can be found growing among the currents in the Sierras.

I find it everywhere along the central coast however. The strain I see most here is the fuchsia flowered gooseberry.

Also it does grow along the southern coast. Now is the perfect time to go find it.
>>
>>752429
I keep hearing stories about people who are immune to poison oak though science tells us that's impossible. I don't know what to make of your friend.
>>
>>752628
I'm sure if they inhaled it or drank it, it would wreck them. Maybe there's so few people that science hasn't tested them? I live in an area where there's fields of that shit. It is also an extremely remote flyover shithole for civilization. Top notch for /out/ though.

I don't really care to explain it since I've no real clue why. I know one thing at least I'm less reactive to it now than as a child. I would have my face swollen shut and fingers looking like sausages from swelling. Now, I only get what looks a little like chiggers, but doesn't drive me insane with itching.

Northeast US. I went out with the intention of finding morel mushrooms, but only came back with these. I'd never gone morel hunting before so I was just kind of wandering aimlessly looking for wet, shady spots. I found a few other varieties of mushrooms (none that I knew how to identify), but no morels. It was also in a reasonably trafficked state land area, not terribly far off the trails, so I'm assuming it was pretty well picked through for morels.
>>
>>753442
>I thought ramps and leeks were interchangeable terms?

It is probably a regional thing. The real problem is that both terms are strictly laymen terms. The plant is, "Allium tricoccum".
>>
Whats a good way to cook mushrooms out in the bush?

Often when I look at ways to prepare mushrooms, they are in the context of a kitchen and shit. Whats a simple way to cook the toxicity out of otherwise safe to eat mushrooms with a simple cook kit?

Most round berries are poisonous like holly, but there are edible ones like grapes and some are only edible when processed like elder. The only sure way of avoiding poisonous berries without complete identification is by only eating crown berries and compound berries.

>>754250
Puffers aren't the only salt water fish that's poisonous, but all freshwater fish are edible (barring local contamination).

>>751345
Found pic related yesterday. If you know what to look for, they're pretty safe to eat. The only other mushroom that's nearly impossible to mis-identify is the giant puffball.

>>753442
This was about 30 yards from a heavily trafficked campground. Morels seem to like drier areas, moist creekbeds were the only place we didn't find them, and even heavily shaded areas only produced small ones. Hope that helps on your next hunt.

>>753589
Fry in either butter if you'll only be out for a couple days, or sunflower/safflower oil if longer (because shelf-stable). Add flour to thicken and salt and powdered milk to taste to make a gravy for game.
>>
>>750913
puffballs and inky caps are easy and common.

Chanterelle and chicken of the woods are also easy to identify. Just get a book and go for it.

most of the time you need to go inland for morels. You'll have far better luck in the Sierras.
>>
>>759798
without some more (read: in focus) pics, it's tough to tell.

I assume you're hoping it's a liberty cap. pinch the stem and wait. If it bruises blue/purple you've got the real deal. The gills look the right color, but it's a shitty picture and that's not a good sub for a spore print anyway.
If the stem is hollow with very succulent flesh, it's probably a mycena. If it was growing out of wood, it's probably a mycena. In fact, if it was growing out of anything but grass, in open grassland, it's probably a mycena. If it was growing out of dung, then it's not a psilocybe.

more concisely: it's not safe to eat.

If you don't take personal health seriously, you could just eat it and find out. If it's not a liberty cap, you'll probably just experience some 'gastrointestinal distress.' Just know that some psilocybes have deadly poisonous lookalikes (see: P. cyanescens vs Galerina marginata/autumnalis).
