Can anyone recommend me a nice inexpensive sharpener that I can buy at an outdoors store?
>>
>>746913
I'm not sure if you'll find it at an outdoors store but the lansky guided sharpener isn't too expensive and it works pretty well
>>
>>746927
this

also, get a cheap combo/fine stone and practice stroking back and forth manually...once you get into the rhythm it isn't that hard
>>
>>746913

check out the lansky turnbox - easy to use, works on everything (recurve or not) - just be careful not to drop ceramic rods - bad times.

Asshole. Wait until the old thread HITS bump limit, and, if you're not a complete douche, let the fucker slide off the front page. Then make a new one.
>>
I can only afford one - a hatchet or a big fixed blade knife?

Currently I already have a spiderco ladybug, so really I just need something for wood cutting/splitting.
>>
>>746988

define afford.

I'd suggest a decent kukri - far better for chopping/splitting than 90% of "large knives", but the ones from HI are around $180.

Or get a mora and a hatchet.
>>
>>746988
Hatchet.
>>
Is my knife any good guys? Going camping with it soon.
>>746626
>>
>>747020

no idea - I have never seen this brand. Handle looks comfortable enough, and if the blade is 3 inches or more, it should handle all the camping tasks. It won't be stellar, but it's a knife - it'll work.

Generally, when in doubt, get a mora or an opinel, and you won't be wrong (and it won't set you back more than 12-15 dollars).
>>
>>746997
>mora and a hatchet

pretty much

$25-35 for a fiskars hatchet/small axe (about the same for a half hatchet, but only for small stuff)
$10-15 for a mora
>>

You're asking way too much. I have been bitching about them making new threads when the old one is only at 200 replies. At least they waited until the old one was close to 300 before making this one. I'm not complaining this time since it was such a huge step forward.

And you can't really expect them to wait until the old one gets to Page 3 or whatever, assuming they did actually wait until it hit 310 replies. /out/ is a slow board so it could take a day before it makes it that far.

>>746913
>>746927
I thnk I have seen that Lansky one at Bass Pro before. That company Wilson's makes a real similar one that they sell at a lot of Dick's, and I'm betting they have that at Bass Pro or Cabela's as well. I think the kits run around $30 with the 3-4 stones, clamp deal, and some oil.

Anyway, I bought that Smith's double-sided diamond one from Dick's for around $20. It has a coarse and fine side. Does a good job getting the knife 80% of the way, but the fine side isn't fine enough to make it razor sharp. I just use the bottom off a ceramic coffee mug as a final step and they get pretty damn sharp.

Got a new knife a while back and figured i'd share it.

It's a chinese Izula clone.
Steel is listed as D2 and after some cardboard testing i have no cause to doubt it. It's definitely better wearing than 8cr.
Finish overall is great and sheath is very secure.
Only negative is that the tip grind is a bit uneven when seen from above but it's very minor and nothing that affects use.
Came sharp.

15$ on aliexpress, highly recommended.
>>
>>747503
and by the way, there are two different versions on ali, the coated ones for 5-12$ are supposedly shit, so stay away from those and go with this d2 version.
>>
>>747503
There is not a single chance in hell its d2
>>
>>747447
Mora don't really break a lot, the only real problem is rolling the edge from hard use

That is a good knife but a Mora would most likely serve you just as well, though it won't be as nice to look at
>>
>>747579
Why not? D2 isnt expensive and the chinese have access to it and know how to forge it. It's a tool steel, not a super steel.
>>
>>747579
The 40$ sebenza clones have been conformed for real titanium and d2 so it's not impossible.
Could also be 440c.
>>
>>747593
Its not an expensive steel but it is more costly to machine and heat treat than garden variety stainless, I've seen a lost of Chinese and Pakistani made knives advertised as 01 or d2 to increase sales when they are made from low end stainless, I'm just from the if "if it sounds too good" school

Try to force a patina, d2 should stain pretty easily with something acidic
>>
>>747447
Thats a fine knife. Its like a mora on steroids.

Hey guys, I know they are not knives but what do you think of wire saws? I know you can buy surplus from the British SAS without much effort and CRKT makes one that fits inside a paracord bracelet that accepts a fire-steel rod, compass, LED flashlight and Bottle Opener as accessories. It seems a lot of companies also make these saws at much lower prices and in two different styles and I'm not really sure which to go with/how to determine which I should go with. Pic related.
>>
>>748036
Get a folding saw instead.

Many people go for a bacho laplander (cheap and work), or you can choose to spend a little more and get a silky saw.
>>
>>747861

Griptilian is not a auto knife you retard. Just like all your equipment, you should maintain it. You clearly don't use knives.
>>
>>748036
I've never used one but videos of them don't inspire much confidence, a folding saw is much better if you expect to have to saw much wood
>>

IME they suck balls, whenever I've actually tried to use them they usually break half way through the first 2" branch.

I have pic related and it actually works well, and fits in a mint tin size tin. Use it a fair bit in the garden and for MTB trail maintenance as well.

The Endura is probably the thinnest 3.5"+ blade on sale today in a production folder, plus Spyderco does a lot of sprint runs in Japanese steels of the FRN handled models.

For me HAP40, Superblue, and ZDP-289 in a decent blade geometry is well worth the looks and FRN handles.

Just arrived, pic related. Made for /out/ tasks and /diy/ tasks ( climbing, rigging, etc. ) and I have to say it is more impressive than I thought it would be for a $40 ( MSRP about $60 ) tool.

Blade is an American Tanto partially serrated, serrations are for rope/cable and was made for one-handed deployment while climbing. One handed closing of the blade too via liner-lock.

Above the blade you see a Marlin Spike, Phillips, Flathead & Bottle Opener. They open via thumb-knick and lock in place and pushing the black knob in the direction of them unlocked them to be put away.

One-handed-deployable pliers ( w/ wire cutter, needle nose ). They open by pushing the black knob in the direction the pliers deploy and unlock the same way, allowing you to fold them back in.

I'll prob use them around the home and on small jobs before I take them climbing. Other side of tool has pocket clip and lanyard hole.

you don't say?

for the record - i have a tracker, and technically - it works as advertised (as in, does everything), but that's not the point.

The "one tool option" is essentially #YOLO given form (the form of a knife). You should always carry two knives (at least), and then there is no need for one knife that does everything. Especially that a good main knife will handle most of what you need anyway.
>>
Spyderco v Benchmade

Which is superior ?
>>
knifes are gay
>>
>>749617

unsolvable riddle.

I prefer spyderco, because their blades have better geometry, but I have and use both brands, and they're close, so just pick your poison.

Both have some great designs - BM 940, triage, mini grip, north fork, the old bone collectors, spyderco delica/endura/dragonfly, PM2, domino, slysz bowie, techno (i like this one) - you can go back and forth until the end of time and not decide a winner
>>
Can anyone recommend me a good, inexpensive (sub $150 preferably) 10-15 inch blade length chopper with no back guard (and preferably a choil) so I can choke up on the knife?

I was looking at some authentic kukris but they're on the expensive side and I think I'd rather have a straight blade just to make sharpening easier. It seems like my best bet is either a schrade SCHF45 or a kershaw camp 10
>>
>>748036
My experience of them is that they are better than nothing but if you are not VERY careful with them then the wire snaps and you are fucked, I've got a cheap no name folding saw I bought four years ago that is still going strong, take a folding saw.
>>
>>748157
I did my knife training back in the 80's and batoning was only advised as a last ditch thing you did when your life was on the line and you had "absolutely no other choice", they taught this because breaking your blade in a survival situation could mean game over for you.

Mid 2000's and YouTube starts up, guys start making review video's of knives and begin to use batoning displays just as a way of showing how strong a knife is, noobs and autists see this and run wild with it believing that batoning is something you should do all the time while out, in all that time I've never had to baton anything thicker than two fingers in width, meanwhile fuckwits are trying to split trees with four inch blades and wondering why their knife falls apart faster than a politicians promise after the election is over.
>>
Hey sc/out/s, I'm trying to find a knife that fits my criteria, hopefully you guys can help. I want a folding knife with a 3"-3.5" blade (not too picky on blade length), non-serrated, manual open (manual open is important to me), and black anodized blade.
I like the Kershaw Thistle aside from the silver blade, and I like the Kershaw Blur aside from the assisted opening.
Any suggestions? Thanks.

>>
>>749860

>>
>>749842
I'd check out some blades from Spyderco and CRKT. If you feel like spending a bit more try Benchmade. Kershaw is an okay choice if being American-made at a budget is important to you.
>>
>>749842

>>
>>749887

>>749885
I'll look into those, thanks. I don't care if it's American-made, but relatively inexpensive would be nice, I'm a poorfag. Thanks
>>
>>749896
the entire line (ambitious, tenacious, resilience, and persistence) are all manual
>>
>>749900
Great, thanks. I take it you think the Tenacious would be a better choice than the Kershaw I linked in >>749855? Any reason why?
>>
>>749904
I wasn't implying that is a bad choice, but from ones the ones I've owned, kershaw can be a hit or miss. The Blur, Shallot, and Cryo are very well regarded, however some others have that cheap/plsticky feel that you notice as soon as you pick it up.

(If you really wanted to, you could get the Cryo and take out the assist spring, just use it manually. The flipper is still usable.)

I have one of each of the line I referenced and I really like them. You're the only one who knows what you like in a knife, no one else can say "this is the best one". If you can give any other details you are looking for, it might help narrow things down more.
>>
>>749910
Alright, thanks. I don't know much about knives or have experience with them, so I don't really have any preference beyond the criteria I've already said. I just want something to use as an EDC, take with on hikes and bike rides, etc.
>>
>>749896
If you want low-price yet well built go to CRKT; Spyderco will cost you too much. You may also want to look into some of the more inexpensive knives from Buck and Cold Steel although I think CRKT. will be your best option.

Where I live I can't have a big knife but I want to have a knife ( or knives ) that are capable of being EDC'd and useful for self-defense from other humans while still being outdoor capable.

The Obake knives ( Pic related, the Obake Skoshi being the smaller of the two ) fit all my size requirements ( 3.64 being barely legal in my region with 2.406 inches being legal in some nearby regions ). They are both full-tang and based off of Japanese utility knives. You can find more info on the knives at crkt.com or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SJO-KogNEGA

Would you feel comfortable carrying one of these knives on your person if you knew you could only carry one knife? I'm hoping you guys can help me out. Feel free to shill knives you feel are better to me.

Personally I find para wrapped handles to be a bit of a style choice and not the most functional option, they're bad for hotspots if you're doing any extended outdoors work. Also whilst I have no intention of poking someone with one of my knives if push come to shove I'm not sure if I'd want to do it with a knife that lacked any sort of finger guard, although that blade does look very poke capable.

For a fixed edc I'd be looking at something more like pic related
>2.4oz
>3" blade, VG-1, Jap made
Or if you want it basically unbreakable you can get it in 3V.

Have you written folders out of the equation?

I carry that little SPEW around a lot of the time. Barely even notice it's there. Can't complain so far. I know it isn't ultra memesteal, but it gets the job done.

Those handles do kinda scare me provided you had to stab something with some force.
>>
>>752184
>although that blade does look very poke capable.

I have those knives and that's about all I'd carry them for.
>>
>>752184
The lack of a guard is a little bit scary, I'll agree. I sadly have ruled out folding blades because my hands are not in great shape and I'd like something I could just pull and use.
>>752186
The SPEW is also a beautiful blade I'm considering and one I may pick up in the future although I think the Obake and Obake Skoshi would be better suited to /out/ tasks than the SPEW. I do like the SPEW but it sort of competes for the same jobs as my multi-tool.
>>752188
Good feedback; if they are strictly self-defense knives I'll have to look elsewhere for my emergency EDC /out/ blade. The trick will be finding one under 2.5 inches like the Skoshi is.
>>
>>752191
What about some of the other crkt offerings?
>>
>>752191
With the shape of the SPEW, I'm very hesitant to pry shit with it. Def not a strong point of those blades.

I always kinda like those Ruger CRKT blades. They look pretty tough for their size, but paracord handle. I think the main thing that sold me on the SPEW is the overall size of the knife for the length of the blade. Really compact. Not sure if it would be the best bushcraft knife but it works well when I need to cut something random.

Do you like any of the Minimalists? They have em in a bunch of different blade shapes.
>>
>>752191
>Good feedback; if they are strictly self-defense knives I'll have to look elsewhere for my emergency EDC /out/ blade. The trick will be finding one under 2.5 inches like the Skoshi is.

I don't think they have to be strictly self defense. You could probably make it work, depending on what you need it for. As long as you don't expect something strange like it being a good knife for chopping things. I carry a spyderco delica from the 1990's and plenty of people here will tell you that the hole is dumb. It's partially serrated too:3
>>
>>752196
Sorry, I must have worded my earlier post badly. I meant outside of the Obake family when I said I'd be looking elsewhere. CRKT is still the company I intend to buy from if possible given they've never done wrong by me. Your Civet is actually very beautiful.

Post camping trip speed review of my new Ontario SP1

>sand off tacticool black powder coat because I'm not into that shit and re-finish with custom mustard etching
>spend half a day reprofiling dull-ass out of the box blade into a sharp 50/50 flat profile
>go back country camping for a week, temp goes below freezing at night so we chop down a dead medium sized tree and haul it through woods to campsite
>tree gets sawed into foot-long logs
>baton the shit out of a couple dozen logs into small kindling, thick hefty blade is great for splitting logs clean in two with a few good whacks
>handle is comfy so no problems with sore hands
>destroy three whoopin sticks from striking the (non-sharpened) back of the knife but such is life

Overall I don't regret dropping 50 bucks on this knife, sheath is good quality as well

Idk about the other knoife, but here's the SPEW sheath without that cord on it. Most plastic CRKT sheaths will have the multiple holes so you can mount it a bunch of different ways. I'll leave it up to you do decide if you can mount it on your coveralls.

Scandi grinds are good for whittling wood.
Outdoor plebs will spend a lot of time using their "bushknife" doing that.

Really they're good enough for an 8 year olds first camping trip.
>>
>>749080
Its cheap. 4chan is full of idiots who dont want to shell out more than ten bucks for a knife, so they defend and shill moras to death.
>>
>>749067
Camillus is dead, fallen victim to chinese outsourcing. Dont buy chinese knives from american companies. If youre looking for china knives, ganzo, enlan, real steel, and sanrenmu are the only sound options.
>>
>>752774
Some of those Ganzo knives look decent.

What about the Taiwan knives? I hear there is a good factory over there- the one that makes the Ontario folders and a bunch of other stuff. Anything from that factory is supposed to be the best for the money as far as Asian manufactured knives go.
>>
>>752777
When there are such great options from american factories i dont really see the point in seeking a knife from taiwan. People praise them, ive never used one, they are probably fine. My spyderco is from japan, all my other knives are from the usa except one sanrenmu. Its the sebenza clone and id recommend it to anyone, cost me 12 bones on amazon.
>>
>>752631

kek. Get real, kid. I have both, and the handle on the izula doesn't compare to the next gen.

>>
>>752810
Are you shilling for and defending moras?

>>752811

>>
>>752816
The Spyderco Taiwanese knives? If you those cost a ton, you are strictly paying for the name and that giant hole in the blade. Even the Taiwanese Ontario RAT folders are only like $25. Anything Asian (Japan isn't Asia) over $50 is a straight ripoff.
>>
>>752816
Does mora bribe people to defend their ten buckawoo knives? I wish

>>
>>752827

eh, moras are fine. They look like plastic handle kitchen knives, and I hardly have a reason to buy one, but for people who can't afford much more, they're a decent option.

It's just silly when some "enlightened" moron comes here thinking 98% of a knife's worth is the cost of materials, and if moras cost $10, any knife that costs more than materials+$5 is automatically a ripoff.

yes. Yes, there is. It just shows how little you actually know about knives.

I admit - the izula 2 is a great knife, has a good-feeling handle, but it still doesn't compare to a next gen.

Here's a photo with both of them. The next gen is a tad longer, rounder, and beefier, especially the front of the handle. It also has thumb scallops.

The one Izula posted has an aftermarket handle that is better than stock, but still not as good as the broomstick.

>>753003
it's also about the steel, handle, blade profile and ergonomics. Moras are good as they come, but many knives are simply better.

Hi guys, I'm knew to knife appreciation. I picked up a Spyderco Paramilitary 2 for novice EDC. Is there a functional purpose to putting a lanyard on it? It strikes me as more eye-candy than utility.

Also, what do you use your knives for? The most work my PM2 sees is opening the occasional cardboard box.
>>
>>753455
Thank god you bought an overpriced chunk of steel with a giant hole in the blade. Should get through those cardboard boxes just fine.
>>
>>753455
lanyards are mostly eye candy unless you want to actually put in your pocket instead of using the clip, you can pull it out via the lanyard
i mostly use my spyderco for food prep around camp and light cutting i.e. boxes, zipties and shit. if i wanna fuck around and do dumb shit with my pocket knife i use my zt, everything else is relegated to my 2 fixed blades
>>
>>753458

don't feel bad about spending the money. nothin wrong with having good tools. that thing will last you a long time.

Just admit you are a collector. Most people in these threads are. You don't have to pretend like you need a sturdy /out/ knife if you are going to sharpen it more than you cut anything with it.

That being said, a full serrated blade is going to have very limited use so it will be nice for your collection since it won't see any real-world abuse anyway.

Bicycle, sizes 14 and 15. I also can't find what that middle-of-the-blade tool is supposed to be. Agreed that it does not seem like a great option as a main knife but it seems like it would get you out of a lot of problems which is why I'm interested.

The SPEW mentioned earlier in the thread is a pretty good all-purpose knife that fits everything but tactical needs. Just be sure to maintain it; and b4 you complain about maintaining it being a lot of work it will be good to learn how to care for your blade. If you mess up don't worry because the SPEW is a very affordable knife ( about $25 American )

If that don't work for you I'd check out some of the cheaper knives and/or "hunting/FISHING knives made by Cold Steel and other big-name companies.

I think you could get away with sharpening it once a week to once a month. I'd also recommend using a dry cloth to wipe down the blade before I ever put it back in the sheath and then lightly wipe it with a cloth with oil once a week. If you like it also look at the Civet blades another anon posted earlier ( although those are not as /out/ friendly ) as their unique sheath system allows for very easy cleaning. If you have any questions just send a ticket to CRKT; when I have they have often times responded within an hour and tend to be friendly.

Cold Steel and Kershaw also make affordable knives that can compete. Another company starting to get a reputation for quality again is ( surprisingly ) Schrade who seems to be fixing a lot of their overseas manufacturing issues. The products Schrade makes now are still low-quality compared to the stuff that used to be manufactured under that name but are competing with the CRKT/high-end Morakniv pricepoint and levels of quality.

A bit unrelated: I always recommend CRKT because of their great service and the fact their designs are custom/practical designs ( they lack a design department, they tend to mass-produce high-end custom models with the knife-maker's blessings ). With the Cold Steel knives what you get tend to be the strongest knives/tools on the market ( they are built to be heavily abused as you will see on their YT channel ) and Morakniv/Opinel are /out/ favorites simply because of the high quality you get on their low-priced models, especially Opinel. I should have mentioned them earlier as they have some inox. blades that would do very well for meeting your requirements if you are okay with a folding knife.

Pic related; a little under $150.00 American from Opinel USA's website. Very much a blade for every EDC size/reason in a nice display case.

Interesting, thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with me. I hadn't heard much about the qualities of each manufacturer.

I have an Opinel no.8 in carbon steel, it's a loyal lunch bag companion. The set you showed me looks beautiful. If I purchased that set, I'd be looking for roles to fulfill each knife instead of the other way around.
>>
>>754066
That isn't necessarily a bad way to go ( in terms of finding tasks suited to blades ) but it is always a good idea to check a company out before buying from them.

My favorite company thus-far is CRKT. Great customer service ( friendly, willing to try and help when realistically possible ( don't expect a miracle every time ) and great products for the price because they work with well-known knife makers ( many of which treat their designs like children ) to mass-produce their products to a compromise both parties can live with.

Cold Steel is just known for absurdly strong blades and their following of Mall Ninja. Their knives go through a series of abuse tests against other, similar knives on the market ( check their YouTube ) and this testing shows that Cold Steel makes some pretty strong knives.

If you have not heard of preparedmind101 his channel might be worth looking at. It isn't outstanding but he makes a lot of good points and one of his video series involves him and his friend Wil(l) discussing what a Morakniv is qualified to do. It is a very interesting watch but it is a great example of seeing what a company/their products are qualified to do and what happens when people expect too much from said product.

welll if they had a horisontal carry sheath i may consider it, all these fisxed blades but no horizontal cary sheath, if anyone ha any suggestions for ideally $100 or less ( 150 max) fixed blade 3-3.75 inch blade, and horizontal carry sheath let me know `
>>
>>755520

Bradford 3 knives are 3in, a little less than 7in OAL, default horizontal leather sheath with a kydex option. You can get them for around 118 on amazon, maybe lower on ebay. Higher and better steels on their website.

They're also very nice people to deal with, make great knives in a variety of steels, and have a good website as well.

Good luck however you decide to go.

Well, I think esee sheaths, and some of TOPS knives will fit tek-lok (or whatever it is called).

Or you could find someone to make a sheath for you. AFAIK, LT (and probably others, I haven't checked) has the option of buying his knives without a sheath (you save about $30), so you can get your own.

That might be a bit of a problem, though, if you live outside the US.

Also >>755527 is just about right. Don't have any experience with Bradford myself, but apart from the few shills, and the obligatory "your knife sucks because I said so" guys, They seem solid.

>>755714
you'd be better off with a gun.
As for a knife - if by "bear country" you mean a general purpose, do anything kind of knife, than it depends on your budget, and what you really intend to do with it. You can get a big knife, like a kukri, or a small one - doesn't much matter if you run into a bear with it, buth the general consensus for outdoor knives is 4-5 inch blade, full flat grind or scandi. Perhaps elaborate on your needs, and we can suggest something.

Personally I'd buy an Ontario Blackbird over an A1, cutting geometry is significantly better on the Blackbird and the two steels are fairly comparable. seems a little silly to break your balls over 1/4 inch.

I usually carry a 3'' blade, but if I wanted a full size it wouldn't make much difference wether it was 4 or 4.5''. Then again - Poland has great knife laws.

Since you are in the US, you should definetely look into sheath makers - I don't really know any, since I just use whatever sheath came with the knife, but I know of Hedgehog leatherworks, Yellow Hawk, and JRE being high quality (might be pricy though).

Just kidding. Brand preferences are usually just that. Preferences. A lot of brands are interested in maintaining a good reputation and will make good stuff. It just depends on your style and not getting a shit brand (like Gerber or S&W or something)
>>
>>756115

the one exception to that would be HK, since they're basically a low-end benchmade.

the "big 3" brands (spyderco, BM, and ZT) have budget lines (HK for BM, Byrd for Spyderco, and Kershaw for ZT).

Literally what is the point of a 6"+ blade if not for stabbing humans, chopping, or batoning.

I can't think of anything that they would be better at than a shorter, handier blade. If you own a long bladed "survival knife" that can't handle batoning then you own a toy. There's literally no point in owning a 6" bladed knife that can't handle it. If your 6" knife is delegated solely to lightweight cutting tasks then you'd be much better served by a smaller, handier knife. My Esee 6 has held up perfectly and processed tons of wood for me, wailing on it as hard as I can to beat it through a knot in the wood. I've gotten halfway through a log before and noticed that the blade was being bent at an angle. Obviously I pushed on through and it split just fine. And I know that the knife can handle way more abuse than what I've put it through.

Just because your shitty knives can't handle batoning doesn't mean the practice itself is flawed. Obviously I would rather use a hatchet but I would also rather not have to carry a hatchet in addition to some other bladed article so I just stick to the Esee. Have fun with your ka-bar's and Gerbers, hopefully they don't shatter when you really put them to the test cutting open your mountain house meals.

it's decent enough - haven't used it in a long while. My biggest complaint (now no longer valid) is the horrible nylon sheath the 1st generation Candirus came with. The newer ones come with a molded plastic, similar to what's on the Izula.
Some people like the sheath, though, because the flap folds over the handle and makes the knife completely invisible (and inconspicuous), but I don't like it.

Question for y'all: What are materials I can use to make an inexpensive, yet somewhat durable sheath? I'm not looking to win awards for style, just function.

that should be pretty easy

clamp it in a vise, use a metal file to re-contour the broken part (grinding along the edge), then gently start re-creating the bevel....you could do it with a grinder, as long as you were careful

once it looks smoothed out, go to a coarse stone, then a finer stone to sharpen it
