you could experiment with it, I'll use a bit on some flies to control the depth of a sink, or to keep something closer to the surface on a swing.

Video of today's catch. A nice plump brown trout. Didn't actually expect there to be fish in this section of the river. Casted a few times and saw him feeding just upstream from me.

Who has an /outwife/ here? My lady sorted out my gear for me while I was at work, put my tackle box and rod in the trunk of my car and texted me to say we should go for a weekend out to the lakeand attached a picture of the weather report.

I can barely find an out-anyone, let alone a female one. Turns out, every fucker near my age just wants to sit around, drink beer, and complain about the home life. "Fishing" entails putting the rod on a forked stick and checking it every couple of hours. Actually, catching something is a monumental event because it evidently only happens 3-4 times a year.

Meanwhile, I'm actually fishing and catching 20-50 or just about anything.

I know that feel. I have one friend who comes along with me and actually gears up and such, we'll hit a river at a resivoir end and hike the whole thing, we also have multiple camping spots at our favourite lakes for over nighters. My wife and I will probably invite him and his wife to join us. 80% of my other friends are either NEETs or the one libfag who doens't believe in eating meat for some reason.

I've got the same issue. I've got one person who has ever followed me in to the woods with nothing but a backpack stuffed with fishing gear and a small machete to find untouched parts of the lake. The rest see fishing camping and hunting as an excuse to drink in nature instead of the back porch

The wife and I preffered the hardtop desu my familia, coupe E36 chassis are sharper to us then the hardtop convertible option. We are however considering upgrading to either the new MX-5 with the Fastback/Hardtop or a Lotus Evora. Not decided yet.

Ice fishing is all about getting the fish out to your hook and knowing where your target species like to be. I was catching rainbow trout that day, and they wont go very deep, normally in about 6 feet of water. You'll want a bell sinker sort of setup as if you were fishing for mackerel, with a heavy weight resting on the bottom and your hooks a piece up in the water column. Brighter baits work, but go with something scented and attractive. You can catch fish with anything from corn to worms in the winter. Some people will also chum up their ice holes, but normally you'll have multiple people fishing from an ice-trough in those situations.

A cool way of working an ice trough is setting up a bait line near the surface, and using a fuckin' spear yo'. I caught a pickerel doing that one time.

>>738248

I fish for bullheads, smallies, and all sorts of trout. I also like to beat down the chain pickle population of Nova Scotia as much as I can.

Onto actual fishing discussion, the mayfly hatch is almost upon us. Soon the trout will be going insane. Are there any better fly choices than the grey mayfly or picric mayfly?
I tie my own flies, last year I made some adjustments to the typical grey may and added dyed yellow mallard wings, which didn't do much for the early part of the hatch, but seemed to outfish the grey may later on.

The chain pickle is not native to Nova Scotia and they destroy a lot of our precious trout lands. A study has been done on lakes infected with them and all that survives is the Chains and the biggest suckers at the bottom...hard enough to keep the trout fishery going let alone have those buggers.

Pic related is kinda what I was thinking. $100 for this combo and the rod looks really nice.

Otherwise almost every major retailer will sell a Pflueger President combo, that is one of the best reels in the price range ($60) and they will come with some store brand rod. I bought one from Bass Pro that came on a BPS Graphite Series rod, but the rod is kinda heavy and not incredibly sensitive. I know Cabela's and Gander Mtn both sell Pflueger President combos for $80-$90 as well on their store brand rods so you can see if you like those. Otherwise you could always buy the reel and then drop $40-$50 on whatever rod you like the best. Berkley Lightning Rods, Ugly Stiks, I think there is a cheap Abu rod (Vengence?) around that price, as well as store brand rods or clearance rods. For a couple $ more, you could look at rods like the Shimano Sellus or Fenwick Eagle (both around $60) and they will be quite a bit nicer than Ugly Stiks when it comes to wanting a specific action.

A fishing day where you catch nothing is better than a lazy day where you do nothing! I'd like to hook up on some trophy-sized bullheads out at my lake, fun to fight on my ultralight setup but I also have a new Pflueger reel I like, picked up a Trion on sale for 20 bucks and it's been really hardy.
>>
>>738306
I'll talk to Strike King™

BassAssassin sells glowing shad baits, but doesn't look like they make lizards. If you look, I'm sure you will find them.

>>738308
>>738309
If you're catching those on beetle spins, they're probably feeding pretty good right now so you might as well stick with whatever works. Cranks and any spinners should work if theh are eating the beetle spins. The jigs and crawdads n stuff seem to be better when it is cold or hot and they are going a bit deeper and chilling out. Looks good tho.
>>
>>738308
I find they like brush like sunken and fallen trees for structure
For lures I've got 3 things to advise
Look for things called nailtails; get white and chartreuse
Gulp alive 1 inch minnows, smelt or pumpkinseed
One of those on a 1/64 oz jighead under a small float 3-4 feet on a slow retrieve kills crappie for me.
Lastly get some 1" rapala originals in a few different colours. And fish all of these like you're trying to get rid of them and don't be afraid to leave and return. Fish a spot, get 3-5 fish, leave, get 3-5 fish in 2-4 other spots then return and just circle the lake like that. You'll kill 'm.

Crappie like to live in fallen trees, your best bet is to fish vertically from a boat with a popeye. Just let it sink and as you're reeling up stop and twitch it a couple times, then reel and repeat. If that's not an option, I've always had great luck using a small chartruese rooster tail.
Pic included was just my part of the catch from a 2-3 hour fish last summer. 7" fillet knife for reference.

>>
>>738644
Grass carp eat plants. End of story. If they are hitting your lure they probably think its a floating plant.

Also, they have been known to eat vegetation off of the bank if they exhaust the aquatic stuff.

>>

Super glue a small cube of sponge on a small baitholder hook, then dip the sponge in the juice from a can of sweet corn. They should hit it thinking its a kernel of corn. Try get it a few feet in front of them and try to false cast as little as possible and with it btw.

Sorry bro but that is a common cap (Cyprinus carpio) not a grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella).

See pic for a diagram of the grass carp. Note the differences:
1. dorsal fin
2. barbels present on mouth in your pic, but not on grass carp
3. Orange coloration on fin tips in your pic, but not on grass carp
4. mouth

Common carp very commonly swim to the surface, so it sounds like normal behavior form them. Corn will catch common carp quite well, as will worms and stuff.

I got my fishing license a few days ago and I've posted here before with some dumb questions

This is the line my uncle set up for me a while ago.

What is that little teardrop coin thing attached to the hook?

Do I need a sinker?

Seasons don't open for anything but panfish until next month, I'm going to Canadian Tire in a few minutes to pick stuff up so I dunno if I should buy anything.
>>
>>738872
>Teardrop coin
Thats is a spinner, used for attracting fish that bite on lures (bass, crappie, etc.)

>Sinker
Depends on your purposes and what other gear youre using. Bait fishing? probably need a sinker. Lure fishing? only if the lure is very light

What do you plan to fish for and what gear do you already have

Some small hard, a big, dark rubber worm with glitter or something on it, a few tiny rubber ones, and a few small jig heads

Planning on fishing for panfish in general, maybe specifically pumpkinseed

It should be tied to the eye, and not under the eye.
Like the wire leader on the bottom eye is.

Use palomar knot. Literally the GOAT.
Also that main mono line looks frayed, on the bottom left. Should probably replace it if you can.

The problem is a lot of it has to do with where I was fishing
I was on the side of a road so I lost a lot of those flies by snagging them on the guard rail on the other side of the road then losing them in the grass
Only one out of countless casts and false casts hit that fucking rail but one is all it takes. I need some good fishing places. And a 5 wt combo, this 7 is killing me. The line feels like it weighs two metric fuck tons when I'm using it

>>
>>739063
Fluke or whatever pretty much. Just jewtube "swimming jigs" or something. Basically like running a spinnerbait but without the spinner. Rip it through some cover.

15lb mono is gonna be pretty heavy to toss a 1/8oz jig though. If the soft plastic has some weight, maybe you can get away with it.

also forgot to mention 28 inch minimum to keep in these parts.

pic is one of the bigger ones i've seen from the river. have seen 3-4 much larger ones though; your estuary might be the largest striper spawning grounds in the world, but I believe ours is the most dense, because they get bottle necked very easily. So we catch a lot of medium sized fish, not so many schoolies as they stay on the shorelines, and the cows lurk the "no fishing line" a line 100 feet away from the dam that is illegal to cast into. [seriously, cast anything and you will hook a fish every time] I've seen many people lose their licenses, and get their gear taken from them for fishing over the line; even worse is keeping a fish caught from over the line. The fine for that is retard high. I have a written warning. I'd like to keep it that way.

>>
>>739245
Nice bass!
>>
>>739262
>How do you fish a creature bait?

Well, pretty much however you want to. You can work it like a jig (just popping it along the bottom), you can just raise your rod tip and let it sink like with worms, or you could swim it. But what's been working good for me is just reeling it in extremely slow, so it's still making contact with the bottom, but the legs/tails are still moving. When you feel a bite just stop reeling and wait until you can feel the fish pulling on the rod, then set the hook. I've found out the bass like to grab onto the legs/tails first, then take the whole thing.

Thank you!

Is there any reason I can't use the best weight rated line available to me?

Why use weaker lines?
>>
>>739340
Higher test lines can resist abrasion better, resist shock better, and can be used for power techniques. Lower test line can be used for wary fish and you can have longer casts with lighter lures. Plus it's always a good feeling when you land a big fish on light line.
>>
>>739340
>Why use weaker lines?
Because they cast better, knot better, are less visible and less expensive and are more fun to fish; a 12" trout on a 3wt. fly rig with 7x tippet is going to be a hell of a lot more fun than that same 12" trout on an 8lb.spinning outfit.

I mean, for meat fishing then yeah you want to go as strong as you can but for sport you generally want to go as light as you're comfortable with while still having fun.

Fishing Forecast: April 14, 2016
The first migratory stripers have reached Rhode Island and Cape Cod, and the weather ahead looks perfect for catching your first striper of the season.

Just like that, the stripers are in. A little earlier than most folk expected, the first sea-lice-covered migratory stripers hit Massachusetts water this week.

Thursday morning, found a school of stripers feeding on spearing in the Martha’s Vineyard surf. The two reported birds working over the fish, schools of herring moving through, and hungry stripers covered in sea lice.

fresh schoolies being caught in Buzzards Bay around Mattapoisett. Just a few days earlier, fresh fish were first reported in Rhode Island.

The stripers are small, most well below keeper size, but fishermen are excited

i retied everything but i realized i dont have any leaders, just that one leader piece with a split ring swivel on one end and a clip swivel on the other end

i learned some knots and had something like this going on, i did some reading and got the feeling from most posts that you really shouldnt clip anything besides spoons onto swivels.

doesnt matter either way because my line got snagged into a bunch of weeds too far for me to go out and i had to cut the line after trying to free it for like 15 minutes.

so,

im going back to canadian tire, suggestions on what to buy to get started again?

do you normally buy a spool of leader line by itself or do you buy whatever i had already on my line?

Yo mainebub if I could recommend properly good fishing it's mostly in the north-east of the province. If you find your way up there you'll wanna start with any of the Stewiacke river pools, then keep heading up into Guysbourugh County. The place is a wilderness and you can have your pick, I fish Perch Lake area every weekend pretty much. Further north you can check out the Barney's River area for some salmon/lunker brown trout action and if you want to hit up smallies Middle River in Pictou County is prime.

There are other fishes found on the south shore like Shad and Gaspereaux and what not, but you'd have to do your research to find their hot spots.

I just want to relax. I wish I woulda got off earlier today, probably could've gotten some bass since some storms are rolling in. Oh well. I'm taking Monday off too so at least I will get some fishin in on Monday as well.

>the weekend

It's my 7 wt.
I got these fish on that 7 wt using the line as a 20 yard strike indicator. The tip of the floating line would sink and I'd set the hook and there would be a fish. One two three
But it's not much of a fight to be honest.
The crappie was 9 inches or so the bluegill was 6.5 or 7 and the pumpkinseed in that pic was about 5 but she was fat and full of eggs. Got her pic and got her back in the water fastest of all
So is a 3 wt light enough for bluegill and crappie but with enough back bone to handle rainbow trout?
>>
>>739726
>enough back bone to handle rainbow trout?

yeah just play the fish with light manual drag.
>>
>>739742
Would a 4 wt fit me better?
I'd probably use it for 90% panfish 10% rainbow trout. The biggest rainbow I've seen landed was about 18 inches and for steelhead I'd be 7 wt all the way
>>
>>739751
I think with a bit of finesse a 3wt would suit you well
>>
>>739759
Well I know what fly rod to get
Any advice from anyone on what rod abd reel or preassembled combo to go after bearing in mind I'm too poor to get crap but also too poor to spend a ton of money>>739759

>>
>>739835

>>
>>739811
Really.
Fishing for herbivorous fish is a whole other world.
You can also catch them on leaves of lettuce and carrot chunks. Haven't tried broccoli yet, but I may want to b

It wasn't even hard to get out, looked like someone just cut their line and tossed it into the bushes. It wasn't there two days ago, right now the only things you can fish for are panfish in this zone and I don't think any officer would believe they were targeting panfish with that on their line.

>>739849

I think I saw similar ones for $7.99 - $9.99 at Canadian Tire, but our currency is weak right now.

With the amount of wind right now I can believe it

I just have a very simple line with a split sinker and a small bait hook, fucking wind is pushing against the side I can fish on (The other end is private houses) and I can't get it very far out.
>>
>>739885
Just go directly at the wind and cast it low. You can cast suprisingly far into direct wind if you do it right. I can cast almost as far into the wind as I can on a calm day.

Do you guys have any superstitions while fishing? For me whenever I foul hook a fish, or I think I'm causing it pain, I'll apologize out loud to it. That way the Wendigo/skinwalkers/Forest elves know I'm not trying to hurt the fish. That's also partly why I try to pick up as much trash as I can.

In North Myrtle Beach for another day. No surf tackle and didn't bring the john boat. Planning to try to hit local freshwater from shore early. Waters still seem a little cool and if I try to fish the waccamaw river it'll be high tide outgoing when I get there. Open to suggestions from anybody who has fished the area. Seems like there are a lot of little ponds around here.
>>
>>739907
If I get a bite on my first cast I pack up and leave right then and there. I also pretend not to be paying attention so the fish can't see me watching them bite if it's a slow or hard bite. I watch bobbers out of the corner of my eye and look at anything but my lure if it is anything but a topwater. I also say something along the lines of "poor little bugger" when I snag anything but a baitfish or carp.

on the topic of carp , how the fuck do i catch carp that are just in huge groups 10-30 fish? or even if i spot a single one, ive tried to feed them topwater by throwing chunks of bread upwind of hem but when the bread gets close they just spook, do i really have to bait the shit out of the area and let 2 -3 baits sit on bottom<?

>>
>>740190
Just get a damn 5wt already; buying an ultra-lite when you only have a 7wt is a waste of money because you still have nothing for middle-of-the-road fish; a 16" trout or a small bass is going to probably snap any tippet suitable for a 3wt but is barely going to put a bend in your 7wt. With the right fly line, leader and tippet a 5wt can turn over everything from tiny little dries to size 6 streamers and poppers to weighted double nymph rigs with an indicator.
>>
>>740363
Just be careful. Snagging is illegal in a lot of states and it's a pretty hefty fine.
>>
>>740378
That pumpkinseed put an okay bend in my 7 wt and was fun, and I imagine a fish 3 times it's size would be plenty fun on my 7 wt

Indiana fisherman back again. Went out today and got severely sunburnt. Caught a couple fish, and birdnested one of my memecasters on the first cast.

My brother also caught his first bass (bottom pic). Aside from a few ticks, solid day /out/. More pics + that video of the 5.6# to come soon.

Also Pepsi you asked how I fish. I do about 95% from the banks of local private ponds. Some industrial, mostly neighborhood deals.

I wish I could tell you... only thing I know for certain is that the bass aren't spawning yet. It's been warm since Tuesday though, so I think in a week or two things will pick up.

>>740465

Yeah I hadn't dealt with ticks in years (I used to be very much an indoorsman) but those suckers were all over the place at the first pond we visited.

>>740466

I won't deny that, but the fish in that picture were intentionally held close to the camera. (Hand to fish ratio). Anyways, I do advise having something for multiple depths in the water column. I go with something slow moving for the bottom (a Texas-rig usually, used in top pic) and then a crankbait for the middle. It isn't warm enough here to even attempt topwater yet.

Also, this pic is of a ~5 lb largemouth that was just dead floating :/ kind of a shame, considering I live in the Midwest and all.
