That's a tough call anon.

I don't really enjoy target shooting in the bush/outside of a range, but my Mossberg 500 has felled many a grouse and hare. It's a workhorse that is with me for about 1/2 the year. I'd give it the nod, but my Winchester 70 in .30-06 is what I really look forward to packing. Goddamn I can't wait for September.

I'm thinking of buying either a Henry Rifle or a VEPR. The Henry in .44 magnum or .45 colt should be powerful to let me kill any north american predator that comes at me and the best part of that is I could easily get a handgun in those calibers.

The VEPR is just a super-reliable firearm; the receiver of the russian RPK put into a hunting rifle should be able to withstand any dirt, snow, etc. that I'd have to deal with for extended trips at the cost of being a bit heavier. It seems like Atlantic Firearms has VEPR and I'd like to pick one up while they are still being imported from Russia, I'm just not sure which to go with. Atlantic sells stock models, a knock-off by Arsenal with SVD-style furniture, a "rare" carbine version they claim was shipped to them from Molot ( Russian company behind the VEPR ) and a "tactical" version ( pic related ) they make themselves based off of a stock model. I think I'd most likely get the carbine if I were to get one; but I'd only do that after confirming it is one of Molot's rifles from Molot themselves.

I don't intend to use the Mosin; it just happened to be in the picture with the VEPR and I didn't want somebody unfamilar with guns to confuse one with the other. Besides, /k/ is no longer in love with the Mosin because the surplus ammo is drying up ( increasing the cost to shoot ) and "better" firearms are currently available.

The '06 is my big game gun. Most seasons aren't open here in BC until September or early August if you're way up north. Snowshoe hares are open 9 months out of the year in my area though so my shotgun is usually with me... I generally don't bring more than one gun when I'm camping, and I usually don't shoot unless there's game to be had either. Still try to take the .30-06 to the range on a weekly basis though.

A .410 / .22lr combo gun sounds more useful than a semiauto .22 for putting meat in the pot. My state says I can take small game birds with a rifle but I'm not sure there'd be much meat left on anything smaller than a grouse if I used a solid bullet.

>nature, where firearms have no place.

Where the fuck else would someone lawfully use a gun but out in nature; you know, that part of the country with the least number of people?

>bow or a spear? Something that can't mow down humans?

Bows are harder to aim and can't be readied quickly, 5 arrows take up more space than 100 bullets, and using a spear you'll spend as many calories as you gain from pursuing a small animal. The majority of guns posted so far are either .22s or bolt-actions, none of which are capable of "mowing down" humans.

>Hunt all you want, with tools that aren't made for modern warfare.

None of the guns posted are made for "modern warfare." There are 3 AK-platform guns from the beginning of the thread and each of them is a semi-automatic sporting gun that has numerous major differences from the original assault rifle designed in the 1940s (hardly "modern" at all).

You have no real knowledge whatsoever of guns or hunting and are "arguing" from a position of ignorance and fear. The chances of you encountering someone with a gun while /out/ are minuscule in your country so this thread doesn't even concern you. Quit trolling and trying to inject politics into the most otherwise reasonable gun thread I've seen on this board.

You will need two exact distances
25 yards
100 yards

Set up your target paper at 25 yards. Shoot at your paper with three or five shots. You will be off.

Lets say you are off two clicks right, five clicks high.
Multiply those two numbers by 4
So you are now four clicks right, twenty clicks high.

Go left four clicks, down twenty clicks

aim at your 100 yard target paper. Take three or five shots. adjust accordling without any multiplication

you are now sighted for 100 yards.

I'm going /out/ this weekend with some friends of mine in an area where I have seen black bears myself, and know that it's also technically grizzly country though I've never heard of any around there. I'm taking several guns with me simply for fun, because I enjoy target shooting outdoors. I could give a shit about the wildlife, I've spent way more time /out/ without guns than with and know statistically that predators rarely fuck with humans.

However, some of the trolls are right about people being needlessly afraid, seeing as a friend of mine is fairly concerned about bears and wishes he had a gun to take with him. He's not spent very much time in the woods, but I guess a lot of people on /out/ haven't either probably so that makes sense.

Looking into starting hunting in victoria down here in australia. As well as giving me another excuse to get /out/ of melbourne, it seems far easier to get licensed if you have hunting as reason to own rather than just shooting comps. Victoria looks like it has deer and a few bird species as well as normal pests. Sadly possums are protected. Scum animals. I grew up with my father shooting and hunting until port arthur. Now I have a massive love for outdoors it seems the perfect reason. Would bird hunting with a shotgun or deer/pest hunting with a rifle be better to start with?

Okay so how the fuck do you stop yourself from gagging and throwing up whenever you try to get the meat from a dead animal? I've thought about trying some hunting but I get the creepy crawlies when I see a cockroach, let alone a dead squirrel and I'm not sure I could cut one open

I have a slingshot. It's just as effective as a gun for small game, while being silent enough to not scare the rest of nature away, or alert the game warden to my squirrel "poaching".

And yes I can legally own a gun, and yes I live in the US. I'm just not afraid of the spoopy animals.
>>
>>740854
Nope, sorry big fella but there's no chance a slingshot is as effective as a .22 or a decent air rifle, you'd be winning slingshot competition awards world wide if you could hit as accurately as your average small game shooter.

Also for interests sake, a normal drinking bottle taped to the end of a .22 with a bit of fluff inside it makes a .22 silent except the firing pin strike.
>>
>>740860
I didn't say as accurate, I said as effective. I'm not trying to hit a squirrel at 300 yards, I'd burn more calories going to get it than I'd get from cooking the bastard. I only need to be able to aim accurately within about 30 feet.

Israeli Military Industries Timberwolf in .357

It's a strange, lightweight pump action that came chambered in .44 mag and .357 mag, but only like one case of .357s came to the states and I somehow got one for free from an old dude.

It's lovely to carry, points nicely, and the recoil and sound make you feel alive while providing enough power to kill deer and people at close range and obliterate armadillos.

Plus it's just cooler than your favorite gun.

i always aim for the head with my .22 lr as to not waste any meat. Small game is too small to hit anywhere else without wasting a lot of meat.

I say that's a little under kill. Say you run into an alpha male or even a mother with her babies. .50 can do work, but it's rate of fire is limited. If I'm patrolling the mojave, I'm using a Unites States Fatman launcher. That'll add a few rads to the local area.

You can't really go wrong with a T3, the new version has a modified ejection port for single feed too which eliminates one of the major advantages the Sako action had.

Scrape together your shekels and get a Winchester Model 70. The new ones are built by FN and are top-notch. Anything cheaper is going to be inferior in one way or another, but you get diminishing returns past that price point (and I say that as someone who loves his Weatherby).

People who know what it is drool over it when I go to sight-in the scope. My grandfather was in the military and was obsessive about cleaning and maintaining it. When I first went to sight it in I was shocked when I didn't have to do anything. It was already dead-on.

My favorite rifle to drag along for a walk is my Remington 512 Sportsmaster. I like that I can load it with .22 shorts and it is so quiet when fired nobody hears it. If I were to carry something bigger, I'd bring M1 Garand.

So, for americans, were do you all go? I take it national forests, cause parks are nogunz.
>>
>>769600

Guns and concealed carry have been allowed at national parks since 2010.

Nope, just make sure to have your approved Form 1 handy, and your approved form 5320.20 if you're out of state.

No autoloader in the world matches the reliability and ruggedness of the Mauser action.

As for price, they're an heirloom quality example of craftsmanship. My sons and grandsons will be shooting my scout rifle long after I'm compost.

>My sons and grandsons will be shooting my RUGER long after I'm compost.
I sure hope you don't actually believe this. There are scores of models of rifle available with Mauser or Mauser-derived actions. A Ruger is pretty far down on my list of ones to own.
>>
>>774828
To be fair my grandsons will probably be shooting my ARs, they'll just have to lube them a bit more. Guns are pretty hard to fuck up if you shoot and treat them like the average civilian shooter does.

I want to take my underfolding AK out but I feel like I'll get hit with an Obama drone lol.
I wish hiking out, camping and shooting recreationally were more socially acceptable as compounded activities.
For some reason, as long as you're shooting at an animal, it's totally fine.

If you have virtually any semi auto rifle other than an AR or AK no one is really gonna take a second look. Those two rifles have really been vilified.

Browning BL-22 Micro Midas. Small, beautiful lever action. Can put any 22's through it including the CCI Quiet rounds. 100% reliable. Cons, expensive for some, and a little heavy for my liking.

Great gun
Most common caliber by far is .30-30 Winchester, but there are other calibers out there for it (like 35 Remington) that can turn it into a capable gun for elk and beyond.

>God I want an integrated handle. I know they're inferior in every way but they look so fucking good.

Ehh they arent really inferior dude. Fixed carry handle's better term.

However carry handle and fsb are most ruggized and can take more beating than another optic and buis.

With skill and practice one can easily hit man out 600yds with those.

Sure reddot will get extra edge in time advantage but my skill and expeeince easily make up for it.

In shtf guy with beginner pack chink accessories and reddot can easily wing a guy with noveskve and acog.

Theres alot purposes for ar15 build a kiss build, clone build, personal preference, retro build, and long range/precision build.

Mine's retro and kiss. The barrel is HBAR it can serve same role as rpk if i need it to.

I have another upper for more refined work.

And other gun for heavier duty.

Oh and be sure to note the different between a1 upper and a2 upper especially rear sight assembly. To some a1 is aesthetically superior. But a2 is without functionality superior due to elevation drum.
