Went out to Karekare for a day hike (JAFA here) over summer, absolutely stunning views. Anybody know any other places around Auckland worth visiting on a short trip?

Rees river North of Glenorchy. down in the south island. we went to finish the whole track including dart river but floods made it impassable. going back there at some point to finish it.

That jumper is a three layer 100% wool hoody i made myself before going on the trip. honestly fuck ever paying $300 for a wool jumper, it literally took me 6 hours to hand stitch the whole thing.

And I really need to go hiking down on the south island, it's some of the best scenery in the world, very jealous.

Heading in to the Kaimaniwas in the next week or two for the roar.

Not a kiwifag but I spent 6 weeks there and I still dream about going back.

I had the best tent when I was there. I don't remember who made it, but I got it in an outdoor shop in Nelson. Really simple two pole design, super easy to set up and pretty strobg during a stormy weekend in the Abel Tasman track. Best part is that the model name was Frank.

Frank was such a great tent.

The waitakere ranges in general are great for hikes. Did you check out the pararaha valley hike at Kare Kare? One of my fave. You can hike over to it on the beach then climb up the gorge where they used to send kauri down to be shipped out.

The heaphy trail is probably one of the most spectacular walks in the world. That whole area of the south island, just be prepared to deal with a fuckload of German van campers. They're all good though and there's nothing like European backpacker pussy

I wanted to do the Heaphy track but I'd got into a big argument with some DOC guy on the Abel-Tasman about public right of access (I'm Scottish) and I was fed up with Great Walks.
We did the Whangapeka track instead, anyone done that? It's definitely not my favorite, but by god does it feel remote.

That's a damn good question. Y'all Amazon-not-having motherfuckers think you can charge $400 for a down sleeping bag? $30 for a USB wall charger that costs $1.50 at Wal Mart...when my hiking boots started to fall apart I wrapped them in plastic bags until my friend flew over to visit with a new pair for me.

Haha noice, yeah its an alg spot just ages to go for good water, shit in the creek was average. only saw lots of shit. very shy of going out in the open when i went. I dont really go out in the roar either, meat tastes like shit anyways. springs my main hunting time.

mean forrest too, where it hasnt been burned. came apon some horses mid week but they bolted, not sure id be that keen on 500kg of horse meat desu. i really want to try get to the kaimanawa wilderness area way to the east some time in spring, thought it would be too dodgey to go there by myself with a plb. some mean country up there bro, closest youll get to the south island i think.

Dived at boat cove, its all a closed doc reserve, only way you're getting their is with doc on the navy boats. mean ride over but pretty average sleeping arrangemen, 3 bunks with barely enough room to roll over. saw heaps of sharks, navy guys chucked a camera down but the sharks all attacked it. its a marine reserve so no fishing.

How cold does it get at night in the North island around October/November? Gonna be doing some hiking around there before going onto the South Island mid November.

Depends entirely on where you are. Assuming Nth Island hiking you're most likely talking about the central plateau? Doing Tongariro crossing, Te Iringa etc? I'd be planning for it to get pretty closes to freezing depending on which way the winds blowing/how exposed you are.
