Sharp end out?

Thinking of getting a custom Benchmade Griptillian. What blade shape and steel would be best for /out/ uses if I wound up stuck /out/ with no other knife? I have the option of Drop-point, Sheepsfoot, Tanto blades using 154CM, D2, N680, or S30V steels.Ideally I'd like Stainless but I'm not opposed to other steels if you can justify why it would be better.

Off the top of my head I believe the wait-time was two weeks but I'm not sure and having trouble finding the portion of the website where I believe I read that. I believe the different in price depended on the knife but for the Barrage I see a difference of $55.00 with pic related. Price does not increase when I add or subtract a pocket clip (it does come with the pocket clip but I removed it to see what the knife would look like without).

I'm thinking of an EDC blade that would be able to do a large sum of /out/ tasks if I wound up stranded in a forest somewhere. Minimal bushcraft tasks, something I could get lash the end of the stick to act as a spear for hunting and then use for skinning game. I know a fixed blade is better but given I often am around my young nephew and other family I don't think I should.

if you are getting a knife you may have to abuse i would go with the barrage, while i havent personally tested the axis lock on my 2 benchmades i always feel like a hard smack on the back of the blade could make the lock fail, the barrage ( spring assisted version) happens to have a secondary lock that prevents the axis lock from being moves, locking the locking mechanisim closed i think of it as a second saftey mechanisim

Start out with a Morakniv or an Opinel; Moraknivs will be my recommendation because you can easily buy them in bulk ( sets of 15 if memory serves me right ) that you won't need to feel bad about breaking. Breaking a knife is something that is more possible than you might think so I wouldn't spend a lot of money on your first knife(s). If you find you like the products Morakniv makes then feel free to pick up one of their higher-priced knives ( like the soon-to-be-released Garberg ) but I'd continue trying out other low-cost products from other companies just to get a feel of what you like/dislike in knives. Once you do that I'd go and buy a more expensive, better quality product from a company like Benchmade, Buck, First Edge ( which seems to have outstanding fixed-blades but sketchy folders ) along with the earlier-mentioned KP-Tommi Puukko blades ( >>724486 ) and other names you will eventually come across here on /out/ and /k/.

Also, I had just gone to Buck's website to get pic related for another thread and they mentioned that registering with them would get you 20% off on your first order. On top of that Buck knives are some of the best "bang for your buck" high quality knives you'll can currently buy so if, for some reason, you have your heart set on a mid-priced ( $80-$250 ) high-quality blade you may want to give them a looksie.

I forgot to mention something: Do not buy the Hoodlum from Buck. While it is a decent knife it DOES NOT hold up to abuse; it has a notch in the back of the blade for taking hot pots off a fire/marrow getting but that notch also weakens the blade at that point. The blades have been known to break at that notch which means it is not a good knife for a beginner or anybody who is rough on their knives. Pic related

L6 is what Svord use almost exclusively from memory, pretty tough steel, probably superior to 5160 and 1075. Was originally used for power hacksaws but they're almost extinct now.

I have one from them and it's nicely made. They make nice custom knives too for reasonable cost (versus higher priced Canadian knife makers like Diving Sparrow), they might be willing to customize the knife more than what they have for sale on their site if you inquire about it. They will do spine filework, for example.

I think they're also a bargain right now on their site if you can wait 2-3 weeks for them to make the knife.

It is M2 steel with a Granadillo wood handle (I love granadillo when it has a dark/light contrast like pic related.) Blade length is around 4 inches, droppoint FFG. Not really any additional bells and whistles.

I don't have a picture on hand. I like it! I would only recommend M2 to others along with the warning that it should be protected against rust... it's a good blade steel but it's nowhere near stainless.

My Ka-Bar heavy bowie has been serving me well for years. I use it as a general camp knife when I'm backpacking and it's great. Tough enough to take one hell of a beating (some people cut logs with it?) and I think it feels really comfortable in my large hands.

While it's design is pretty minimal I think it's pretty cool looking. I'm not a fan of the funky blade shapes or patterns, though damascus steel is pretty cool.

Who is doing this? I've got some very nice knives in my opinion, but don't consider myself better than the guy with 1 second hand mora and nothing else. People who feel superior that way actually really irritate me, actually.

I'd suggest at least as far as my own posts are concerned- they're never from a position of superiority at all. Just adding my two cents since I might happen to have that knife/brand and people are asking for comments about them.

Not even close. You might be surprised at how shit bargain basement knives can be.

Also, some of us are into sharpening and knives as hobbies, so we buy, sharpen and carry lots of knives. I use every single pocket knife I own for EDC and keep them very, very sharp.

Granted some collect knives in the sense of being knife shaped baseball cards, but I doubt many of THEM are posting in /out/.

I also don't pretend to know anything about /out/ subjects whatsoever. I just like the more practical knife discussions on here compared to /k/.

I never do that. I entirely agree it's shitty to do. I'll say negative stuff (buck folding knives are often off center compared to other brands I handle, condor occasionally has issues with how well they grind the pins on their handles), but giving a guy a hard time for owning a $20 kershaw is shitty as hell.

Although it's become a meme you should get a Mora, despite the hate they get because of their ubiquity they are a very good knife and relatively cheap.

My first outdoor knife was a chefs knife from a yard sale, I paid a whole dollar for it and used it for five years before getting another more conventional bushcraft knife, the chef's knife worked great and the high carbon steel held a very sharp edge for a long time, it's only downside was you had to keep an eye on it or rust would grow on it in no time.

If you are willing to invest the time up front, then I recommend learning to freehand sharpen on full sized benchstones. It will take some time to learn (I recommend practicing on cheap knives), but once you get the hang of it you can sharpen knives very quickly.

When it comes to benchstones, you could literally spend less than $50 or more than $500 depending on what you get.

The cheapest and easiest place to start if you aren't sharpening very high carbide steels is to get a Norton combination India stone (green/orange) and use it with mineral oil.

You won't have to worry about keeping the stone flat, and they are pretty cheap.

There are also waterstones and diamond plates, but those are more expensive options.

Himalayan imports. They have a forum on bladeforums where they post blemishes or blades that fall outside their normal inventory for a discount. You have to be really fast though. I got a really heavy chopper with a full handle instead of tang. I beat the shit out of it for the last 6 years and it's still great.

I think Boker and Condor are supposed to be decent brands too. They seem to have lots of those. If I had that $100 gift card I would probably do the RAT 5 or 7 if you want to go big and then spend the rest on some sharpening stones or whatever.

Some of the stuff on their site is sold by different vendors so hopefully the gift card works for that. But the knives I linked have all been Walmart itself.

All of the knives I own are either stuff that somehow ends up in my car because somebody dropped it or I found them on clearance, so disregard any of that. Walmarts prices actually look really good on most of the stuff I was looking at. Those Ontarios are priced really well.

Only thing I really paid full price for was my Leatherman because fishing.

/out/ is slow. Check back later tonight and I'm sure there will be more reccommendations from people who own some of those knives. I just know tons of people here own those RATs for outdoor stuff and I have never heard a complaint. They don't cost so much either where you are afraid to really use them.

The one in that pic is the C/K Dragon so it is a bit bigger. But those are an old model so they are all over eBay on clearance for like $25. Can't really go wrong at that price.

But I have the SPEW that is kinda my EDC and those run $30-$40. I like it a lot. The shape of the blade makes it quite compact in the sheath so I wear it on my belt all day and don't even notice the thing is there.

5" is really on the top end of medium knives, 8" is big and for the tasks you've listed would be very unwieldly. I'd be looking for a 3-4" knife for those jobs.

Hi guys; what do you think of D2 Steel on your /out/ tools? At first glance it seems like a great compromise because you have a lot more corrosion resistance than you do with carbon steels but you get "strength above stainless steels" too.

This might sound pretty bad but I have to ask: does Spyderco have any decent bushcraft knives or outdoor tools; and I mean truly decent?

Ever since Pepsi posted that sharpmaker tool Spyderco went from "meme tier" in my mind to being respectable and I'm now seriously considering purchasing some of their knives for the first time. I'd prob get an Assist in orange for EDC but what about /out/ing? I did see they have a bushcrafter blade but I also notice it lacked jimping for your thumb. what else do they have?

I've seen a few; the two I like most are either discontinued or soon will be ( Rock Salt/Schemmp Rock ( which is basically a re-design of the Rock Salt ) but they do have a bushcrafting fixed blade, some other fixed blades that look a lot like their folders and even an tactical axe made of D2 steel. They also seem to be involved with the Randall Made knives.

I pried some shit with my knoife and had a lil chip in it. Had to hit it with the coarse diamond deal and it's a pain to get a razor edge after doing that. Not horrible but not nearly as easy as just touching it up. I did coarse diamond block, fine diamond block, and then coffee mug and it seems to work bretty gud.

Hey /out/, can I ask you a question about a little more than just knives here?

I recently stumbled upon a YouTube video giving some pretty high praise to Schrade's tactical pen and it made me curious about the company. I hadn't bothered with them since they had gone out of business and then were later revived by Taylor Brands ( who now own Schrade, Uncle Henry, Old Timer, Imperial and Smith & Wesson knives/tools/etc ). I was actually pretty impress with what I saw and intend to look at some YT reviews on more of their products tomorrow but seeing items like pic related, the pen ( see below ) and their folding saws/axes made me wonder if their products were decent. So I just found pic related for $37-$38.00 and it comes with the sheath and sharpening stone. I know Ontario Knife is supposed to make some good knives but is this one of them? I've heard it isn't full-tang and the blade rusts pretty easily which concerns me if I'm going to be out for more than a month and lack access to oils and the like.

By the way, the saw on the blade seems really impractical and I'm wondering if you know what it is supposed to be used for.

So i bought a Mora Companion MG just to dick around with.

Holy shit the ergonomics on these knives are great. I'm going to get one of the 2mm spine ones reground to FFG to use as a utility knife around the house.

Oh, I also mirrored the edge bevel for fun.

Dude honestly, you shouldn't be using a knife to cut through wood. That's what hatchets are for. Any random filet knife made of good steel with a sharpener is perfect for skinning and scaling. I generally recommend Kershaw knives but honestly it's a sharp piece of metal and that's hard to fuck up.

Helle are fantastic. Brilliant knives. Maybe even think about buying a blank and finishing it yourself to save some money. If you want a good puukko, i would go finnish. Erappuu, Kauhavan Puukkopaja, Ahti, Roselli, Martiini, Wood jewel, and woodsknife are all fantastic finnish puukko brands that produce great quality puukkos at reasonable prices. Some are better than others, but you can't go wrong. Its also worth noting that ahti knives come without seconday bevels.

Aditionally, if you really want something special, buy a kainuun puukko. Some of the best around.

I shop for most of my fishing stuff at Dick's and Bass Pro. Dick's has better sales by far. Bass Pro does sales on lures and tackle boxes and shit like that, but they rarely have sales on rods and reels. Dick's almost always has a few reels on sale for great prices. Therefore they get a much higher percentage of my high dollar impulse buys. Plus when Dick's has a $120 reel on sale for $70, I'm probably going to drop another $100-$120 while I'm there on a rod and line.

Only reason I go to Bass Pro is their selection. If Dick's had anywhere near the selection of Bass Pro, I would always shop there. Plus Dick's has a better rewards program.
