Thinking of getting one, would it be worth the weight and size on a long trip?
>>
Well if you do get one just be SURE to also purchase a heavy fucking leather strip with 2 buckles on it. Cuz other lighter cord won't do the same job. That's for sure....
>>
Wool blankets are warm, but heavy. A down blanket/quilt I'd much warmer and much lighter.

Wool will keep you warm while it's wet, but it does absorb water and gets extremely heavy while wet.
>>
>>723376
Heavy.
That's pretty much it, but that's plenty reason not to to take it if you have the carry it yourself.
>>
I'm thinking about getting one for backpacking trip so I can use a pin and wear it for maximum comfort. But don't want to look like a druid or some cos-player.

Is it possible to wear a blanket with a backpack on your back? How do?
>>
>>723407

>is it possible

Have you never used a backpack before? Roll the fucking thing up and tie it to your pack dude... Are you this dumb or just a really shitty troll?
>>
>>723411
I meant wear it as in throw it over your shoulders like a makeshift poncho to keep warm and wear the backpack at same time. Shoulder straps make things complicated.
>>
>>723413
Obviously it just depends on how large your backpack is.
If it goes on the same level than your head, good luck. If it's just a small daypack, it'll look like a small hunch under the blanket and nothing else.
>>
>>723407
Don't. I have a wool blanket and it's comfy as fuck for a camping accessory but I would not wear it as a poncho. For one thing, wool blankets are like velcro for debris, twigs, stickers, etc. Secondly, when it gets wet it gets very heavy and clammy feeling. Yes wool insulates when wet, but it's still not a pleasant feeling.

If you're dead set on wool, get yourself a nice shirt as a mid layer and wear a synthetic shell or poncho over it.

You will not be anachronistically stylish, but you will be a lot more comfortable.

you will 100% look like you're trying to be a hobbit
>>
>>723376
They're great for car camping. I haven't tried one backpacking, for reasons mentioned by others.
>>
>>723376
it's the baseline I guess. I feel wool and fleece blankets are about equivalent products.

I could carry either for different reasons. I'd tend toward fleece though generally.
wool / fleece

-wool/fleece warmth about equal wet or dry although fleece will wring dry a lot better IMO
-wool somewhat fire retardant, fleece melts instantly
-fleece dries about 8x faster than wool
>>
>>724141
I suppose you are referring to polar fleece and not a real fleece, which is wool

>>

yeah. thanks for mentioning the difference.
>>
I carry a wool hand towel for various things on longer trips such as showering and stuff. For a blanket, I carry a Mylar blanket.

I look like a terrible fright while /out/ 95% of the time because I simply do not give a shit. Doubly so in hunting season.

This. I pretty much only carry a wool blanket when I'm car camping. I also always have one in my trunk in case of an emergency.
