Do you guys want to see the opposite of comfy?
This is a picture of me with garbage bags taped around my legs to wade through what was essentially a swamp in the Reese valley, New Zealand.
My (one upon a time) 'waterproof' boots were no good because they had a small hole somewhere, and because they only went just above ankle height. I was severely under-prepared for the trip. I had no idea what I was getting myself into.
Ended up with all my pairs of socks getting wet save for one, my pants getting soaked, and my basically being able to pour water out of my shoes.

That very same night, my hammock split right down the middle and I had no sleeping mat. Still with at least two more nights to go on the hike, I toughed it out and slept on the ground under my hutchie. It sleeted that night. It was fucking cold as shit.

Next night, same shit. Wrong time of year to go to this valley. Water up my legs, fucking freezing, but me and my bro slept in a cave we found on a bed made from moss. It was cool, but I was still grumpy about my hammock breaking.

Cont...
>>
>>695918
Pic related is me looking quite sad in our "cave" shelter. We hooked up one hutchie so that we would be protected from water, and another as a ground sheet type thing.
My mate put his boots (at the front of pic) too close to the fire while he was trying to dry them out.
The top-back of one of them melted quite badly. Never ever dry your boots too close to the fire.

The next morning, with our semi dry socks, we packed all the way back to the trailhead. Weather forecast said it was only going to be colder, and with no insulation from the ground I was not keen to spend another night. On the way we took a "Shortcut" up over a plateau. Bad idea. It was a huge bog on the top, knee deep in swampy spider infested moss. A little grey bird we fed rice to followed us all the way.

We got back to the trail 'car park' just as it started to get dark and wondered how the hell we were going to get back to the closest town, Glenorchy. Just then, some people rocked up in their wagon "just to have a look". They were nice enough to give us a ride all the way back.

My friends you have no idea how good the hot bread and chicken schnitzel at the local pub tasted that night.
>>
>>695923
But you know what guys? It was one of the best experiences of my life. The scenery there was beautiful, me and my best friend got to experience things we had never even imagined over there. Despite the shit that happened, we managed to keep a positive attitude and laughed it off. We were inexperienced campers, and had never hiked anywhere near as far as we did over these couple of days.
The landscape out there absolutely dwarfs you, and the snow-capped mountains almost bring tears to my eyes even now when I see pictures of it.
That's what it's about. That's why we go /out/, friends. I don't care about all the shitposting, all the bullshit on this board. You're all my brothers because you all love the same thing that I love.

We endure the shit things that happen. We endure the muddy boots, the wet socks, the freezing cold. We endure the gear failures, the shitty boring food, and the rationing of clean water.
We not only endure them, we embrace them so that we can experience what it's like to be inside the wilderness. To interact with nature on such an intimate level, and to stare in awe at her beauty.
Friends, things like this really make you appreciate how big the world is, but also help you to realize that you are a -part- of the world.
You can walk in places and see things that others have as their computer wallpapers. You can sleep in caves on beds of moss in a beautiful valley. You can set foot in places that a very select few people have ever been, just by taking a few steps off the trail.

That, my brothers, is the comfiest thing of all.

I have a bunch more pics. I'll post a few of the good ones.
I love going back through these photos. It's all memories I'll have with me for the rest of my life.

This picture here is from halfway up the side of the valley. I think if you look close you can see a tiny little hut on he other side. It gives you an idea of the scale of the picture.

The mountains that surround you in this valley are massive.

>>695960
This photo was taken on the second morning of the hike when it was sleeting.
The cold I felt in my feet is like nothing i have experienced. The sleet was forming a layer of ice around my wet shoe, and it was making my drenched sock progressively colder.

>>695963
In all honesty I think things could have gone much worse.
This picture shows just how under-prepared I was for the weather.
The only waterproof item of clothing I had was that rainbird jacket. It got me through the rain in Vietnam, but it just was not enough for the cold sleet of New Zealand.
Luckily I had a good sleeping bag, so at night I managed to stay reasonably warm (despite sleeping on the ground with no insulation)
>>
>>695969
We were carrying more than we needed, but you have to keep in mind that this was our first ever major hike, and we had to carry all our possessions for the whole two weeks we were in New Zealand with us.
>>
>>695973
Shirtless photos were a must, but rest assured I put my clothes back on very quickly. The wind was super frigid.

It really is a surreal feeling being so far away from anyone, with only what you have in your pack. No phone service, no way of contacting people if anything were to happen.
It was just me and my friend and nature.

I don't remember who said it, but something was always at the forefront of my mind on this trip.
"It's never you against nature. Never think that. You have to work with nature, because if you try to best her she will change on a whim and you'll be gone in the blink of her eye."

Cheers dude, looks like a lotta fun. I just traveled all over the US and hit a ton of national parks, but I did it solo so I didn't get to do any epic hikes like this. I wouldn't do something like that solo, not unless I was a stud /out/ dude and in better shape. Trying to get a friend to hit up Glacier or Yellowstone with me in the next few months to do a 3 or 5 day backpacking trip and actually get out and enjoy the solitude.

New Zealand looks sick by the way... I've heard nothing but good things about it.

And incubator 20 with over stuff should easily take you to 15 degrees. You must have had some air gaps.

With that quilt hung properly, you shouldn't even begin to feel cool until it's below 20 degrees, you should even be able to tolerate the cold at 10 degrees.

Was getting tired when I was behind the wheel, so I pulled off on one of the million side roads in Dixie National Forest in Utah. Car camped for the night, behind me when I was taking this pic is a huge valley that looks out for miles. Wind was a bitch that night, but it was beautiful. Not the most comfy of pics, but it was a fun night and was super comfy for me.

That's what I figured from all the reviews I read that I was doing it wrong. If you would be so kind as to do a quick write up on how to properly hang an underquilt I would be grateful. I have looked around and there doesn't seem to be many tutorials for it. The best I saw I think was a video from shugemery (sp?) On YouTube.

Would having a UQ that is too long (I think is 6'8") be an issue for it? I got the long because I'm 6'1" and figured if I had one that was 6' that if I shifted my head or feet would hang slightly out on either side. My Hammock is a wbbb double layer so it provides a litttttle bit of insulation/wind resistance

>>
>>694015
>comfy
I hope English isn't your first language but I keep seeing you misuse this word on this board. "Comfy" is a contraction of "comfortable", which means physically comfortable. "Cosy" is even more ensconsed then that, it means being wrapped in a blanket in front of the fireplace. None of these words pertain in the remotest sense to the experience of sleeping outdoors.
>>
>>698182
>"Cosy" is even more ensconsed then that

Sometimes hanging an underquilt on a wbbb can be tough because of the foot box, not impossible though.

Honestly the best way is just trial and error in your yard. If you have a significant other, or friend, have them lay in the hammock (in your normal position) and adjust till it fits.

You want the quilt to be snug up against tou, without compressing any of the quilt. You also want to make sure each end is cinched up enough so that there are no gaps. Sometimes cinch in them up TOO much will create a gap.
