Dick Proenneke. He was a WWII Sea Bee and Alaskan Jack of all trades who eventually decided to build himself a retirement cabin at Twin Lakes in the Alaskan back country. He filmed himself building it for his family and some filmmakers he met up there eventually cut his footage into a documentary that gets aired on PBS a few times a year.

When he died, he left the cabin as well as several decades of data he collected on weather, plant life and animal populations to the Federal Government. The cabin is now a National Park landmark you can visit.

The documentary is called "Alone in the Wilderness" although that's a bit misleading because one of Dick's old Navy buddies had a cabin on the same Lake and Dick had plenty of visitors over the years.
