>this week, anon was found dead 2 and a half miles into the Appalachian Trail. It appears as though he froze to death, attempting to cook his paracord bracelet with an "altoid tin stove". He was also surrounded by dulled Bear Grylls merchandise, which he appeared to be using in an attempt to open another altoid tin labeled "survival kit". A cell phone next to the deceased made it easy to identify him, after sifting through hundreds of pictures of camping infographs and anime girls. When reached, anon's mother was quoted as saying, "Yeah, i wondered where that weeb fa**ot went off to." Back to you in the studio, Tom.

This

I remember seeing a documentary (Netflix) that talked about the big picture stuff, but never the logistics. The main thing I recall is at the first stop, everyone mails back their useless stuff that weighs them down.

I'd love to do it.

There are quite a few north bounders who start late February every year. I'v been seeing 2016 thru hiker blogs popping up over the last 10 days. Its wet but above freezing in Georgia, they'll live.
>>693220
>>693227
The AT is a 2,200 mile walk to Main, not a bush crafting hang out. People who bring guns and axes and fishing poles on the AT don't know wtf they are doing and either send that shit home, drop it in a hiker box, or go home. If everyone hunted, fished and made shelters along the AT it would be destroyed. Thousands of people use the trail. LNT my nigga. Resupply in town our mail yourself calorie dense food.
>>693300
More like every 3-6 days. In New York and New Jersey you hit a store or deli every day for a stretch. And in the Shenandoahs you can buy beer like every 5 miles. That was one of the funniest parts.
>>692866
OP, I thru hiked last year. It was the best thing I have ever done in my life. Don't start hiking 15 plus mile days until after the Smokies. Get your trail legs and you can start putting in 20 mile days all through Virginia. Pennsylvanian is going to suck due to rock and lack of view. New Hampshire and Main is some of the hardest trail in North America, but its the most beautiful shit on earth. Eat lots of meat when your in town. Sleep in the middle of shelters with your head facing the outside to avoid mice crawling on your face while you sleep. If you don't have an AWOL get one asap. Stay at every free or donation church hostel you can. Practice LNT and tell others too. Have fun anon.

>>
>>693363
>tell others too
Your post was good until this.
Nobody likes the whiny guy. Yeah, it sucks to see somebody doing shit like that but you pick it up and pack it out. You are not the AT's cop. Shit can get very nasty if you start an altercation and you will probably see the person again upwards of 50 times depending on pace. Or you may never see them again.
>>
>>693481
Met Lorax and Kimchi briefly. We stopped to tell her congrats on the podcast but she was hiking southbound so we never camped together. Met Scott Jurek, great guy.
>>693562
Most thru hikers I met were down with LNT. Section hikers and weekenders were not as educated and often did dumb shit out of ignorance. I never felt out of place talking to people about it and things never got tense. Ridge runners always talked to us about LNT and told us to spread the word. I packed out my fair share of trash and do every time I hike.

Cool, we're all holed up here in Alta for ski season.

Wind and Lorax work with me at the P-Dog and Kimchi is my friend's roommate at the Hustler.
>>
>>693610
You've been lucky, every time I hike it seems I get into it. Must be me. Today fucking dog off leash came at me. Fucking pepper sprayed the bitch and owners got all shitty and still wouldn't leash it. Peppered one of them and had the cops waiting for them when the exited the trail. Both got arrested and dog was taken into custody. Fun day.

Lesson to doge owners... leash them
>>
>>693704
No, we aren't. The planet is doing just fine, faggot.

That being said, it still makes perfect sense to leave as little a footprint as possible for our own benefit.

That's what happens when the most dominant species to ever exist shows up. It's not our fault that we're better than everyone else.

Furthermore, how can we even prove that these extinctions are exclusive to our time? How long have we been observing this? Maybe it's pretty normal for small species of bacteria and insects to go extinct, and we just never noticed it because we only recently had the capability to record it.
>>
>>696337
>most dominant species to ever exist
That is still bacteria in terms of mass and total numbers. And they made our atmosphere 21% oxygen
>how can we even prove that these extinctions are exclusive to our time? How long have we been observing this?
>what is the fossil record?
This is the 6th great extinction
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holocene_extinction
>>
>>696580
Do you blame all the great extinctions on global warming and Al Gore?
>>
I plan to do a 4 weeks on the AT in April. Literally spending every free hour researching gear and preparing. No set destination or distance. Just as far as my legs can take me. Not sure where to start it. NOBO or SOBO?
>>
>>696337

The known record of complex life goes back to about the Ediacaran, which is over 560 million years ago. Paleontologists measure mass extinctions with the diversity of lifeforms, if many different species more or less suddenly stop to show up in the fossil record thats a hint. One should keep in mind though, that the fossil record almost exclusively centers on marine lifeforms, as its the biggerecosystem that has also existed for longer.

I'm thinking about Pawling, NY to Harpers Ferry for easy transportation. I can take Amtrak/Metro North train and that'll drop me in the woods right on the trail. Then I can catch a bus home in Harpers Ferry.
Is 422 miles doable first time out on the AT? I got about a month to do it but I can go a few days over if I need to.
>>

First post itt but you would probably know most so I'll address you

I plan to do the PCT in a year or two depending on how things go, but I've been backpacking for several years now here in the states, hitchhiking and stealth camping without a break save for the times I rubbertramped with girls. I have a dog that can carry her own food for several days, and I could get her a better backpack to perhaps make it 4 days of comfortable eating and calorie intake. Assuming I'm better financed, do you think it feasible to take the dog along? I figure once I shed weight(I carry gems and rocks and other things that could be done without, lel) and tailor my bag to the essentials I'll be able to do over 30 miles a day if I had to get somewhere. I'm more worried about both of our's water, but I'm not sure it would be a deal considering how well we do together as it is. What do you think?

For the love of Pamola, please don't spray champagne all over Baxter Peak if you get to the end. Celebrate in reverent silence, don't carve your name into the sign, or write your trail name on a rock. Watch the ravens fly, and then hike Knife's edge down to Kidney Pond.

Trust me, you'll be all the better for it, and you wont get yelled at by the park service.

Too lazy to look this up now but I know they were debating moving the end point to a lamer spot because of the partying going on.
>>
>>698946
I actually worked at Baxter for a while, and the park Naturalist sent some very threatening messages to many of the organizations responsible for monitoring thru hikers and such. She basically said they'd cut off the AT right at the border of BSP. I ha d lots of issues with thru hikers smoking pot and drinking in public, even with children present. AT hikers represent only about 5% of their user base, so they would have no issues with rerouting the AT.

The issue is a lot of thru hikers are not experienced outdoorsman, and don't practice LNT.

Dang, I went camping just the other days with my dogs and forgot the leashes, my dogs are very nice but do run at people when they see them for the first time because they are easily exciteably. It's very unfortunate knowing you peppered a potentially harmless dog.

On the other hand safety first, and I'm sure you did what you felt was right.

But again, if you pepper sprayed MY dogs just because they ran at you there certainly would be a fight
>>
>>705792
m8, properly trained dogs should come back to you when called. large dogs running towards you when youre not expecting it is very scary.

even if you were in the right.
