Yah, the most important knife skill to learn is the safe use of a knife. Always work in such way that if someone sneaks behind you and and hits you in the back you won't bleed to death. Another technique to prevent injuries is to expect whatever you're cutting to disappear into another dimension at any time. Of course this does'nt happen, but you can easily lose your grip, the wood can break and the blade may unexpectedly go through the wood.

This is what my mother told me and it doesn't really work. Following that rule it's difficult to do anything more difficult than sharpening a stick.

The way you control your hands/arms is what counts. When you push, you don't just push but you push and pull at the same time. When something unexpected happens, the muscles able to stop the blade are already "activated".

The ability to stop movement when all resistance disappears is what counts and there's no time to react, the muscles have to activated before the accident.

Using your torso as a rest for the knife blade is something you'll never learn if you think holding a knife away from you is the only safe way.
