Why do /out/ists think that any scandi grind blade with a plastic and/or ubber handle is a Mora?

>>664280

that's exactly what it is, I just see people referring to all sorts of knives as Moras
I mean, if people are gonna pretend to know about knives, at least identify them correctly
>>664241
>2016
>not knowing knoife
>>664283
yeah but it's a "mora style" knife which people just call "mora" i don't think it strictly means the exact make anymore. kinda like how people call all razor blades "gilette blade" or all wipes "vileda". stuff like that happens a lot altho they can differ from country to country greatly.
why are knives with a plain edge over the entire blade better than knives with half plain half serrated?
>>664235
Can we all agree that the Mora 711 is the best Mora there is?
>big handle for burly manly hands
>slim blade profile and point for extra whittling abilities
>carbon steel
>sturdy tang
>low price tag
>>664298
because serrations have a very narrow application, while a plain edge is better for general use. Also - combo blades tend to have the serrations right where the most useful part of the blade is. Unless you have a very specific reason that requires serrations, you should have a plain edge.
And no, serrations are not something you get "because they don't bother you and might come in handy" - you either specifically need them, or you don't want them.
>>664298
because you can't whittle with serrations.
for bushcraft the most used part of the blade is the first 2-3cms.
serrations cut certain stuff better but those stuff that are not found in nature.
so they suck as bushcraft knives but work better as rescue knives altho rescue knives usually don't have a point safer that way.
>>664291
>people call all razor blades "gilette blade" or all wipes "vileda"
please
this doesn't justify it, it's horrible to say you're going out to buy gilette when you mean razor blade

A real stone would be better, but i was looking for one like PepsiFag got so i can throw it in a pack and not have to worry about it. A stone can crack, but the stick wont. And if I'm going out, my blades will be sharpened beforehand anyways, so most i would need is a quick touch-up.

Why does /out/ like those knives so much? Is it because it is by far the cheapest knife with a carbon steel blade by a decent manufacturer?
I was looking at their prices and they are all over the place. Is the carbon steel in those $15 Moras actually good?
>>665360
Its good because chipoltle and a large coke is more expensive than a Mora, so you dont feel as burned if you dont like it or it breaks. other than that, its one of the few outdoor related companies that offer a decent product a literally a fair price.
The truest definition of paying for what you get. a fair social contract between Mora and the consumer.
>>665377
That's why I can't justify buying a Benchmade. I'm sure they're nice and all, but I feel like you are paying 80% of that $200 retail price for the name. I'm sure some people will disagree, but seems like ~$50 should be a good price for a high quality folding knife. Providing you aren't getting totally raped by retailers and middlemen.
I'm stoked on that $17 Kershaw Antelope Hunter and $25 CRKT CK Dragon or whatever. Clearance and discontinued models are GOAT. I want a decent tool, not a fashion statement.
The ~$40 for that little CRKT SPEW seemed tall for that little knife, but I really like the thing after carrying it around a bit. The size of it and the compact sheath makes it a great replacement for a folder.
>>665360
They use the same carbon steel across the board, Uddeholm UHB 20C which is a Swedish analogue of 1095, there are other companies charging $150 for 1095 4" knives, that's why people love them.
Also 12c27 is a damn good stainless for the $.

I was playing with that sharpener on this old Frost knife that had like zero edge left. It got the thing pretty sharp even though I barely know what I am doing.
The instructions for the sharpener also said it takes a bit of use before the cutting surface is broken in and really starts to remove material well. But it still put a decent edge on an incredibly dull blade fairly quick.
What is the verdict on wet vs dry sharpening? Instructions said I could go dry, with water, or oil. I just did it dry. Is there a huge advantage to the oil? If I don't do the oil, will there be a big improvement with water?

I prefer scandi knives for bushcraft and camping for its proficiency in woodcutting. I own lots of scandi knives, many of them just Finnish Puukos but I have a couple of full tang ones too which are the Casström No.10 in O2 and the TBS boar in K720. >What's the big deal about "full tang" knives? Just durability?
no
full tang makes it possible to use even if handle breaks or rots.
it's not one bit stronger or more durable.
most knives break at the blade or at the neck of the blade not inside the handle.
>>666607
Durability a little... Though there are pleanty of strong enough stick and partial tang knives out there. Often stick tang knives break where the blade thins down to the stick part. Useable if a handle slab comes off also. Then there's the comfort of just knowing its' as strong as a knife of it's shape and type can possibly be - that's pretty nice.
Bear Grylls and Coghlans are the best outdoor brands
>>666667
Thank god you missed it
>>666607
Strength if you want to dig or pry with it.
I too prefer hidden tangs or even rat tails if they're strong enough.

I'm about to get into knifemaking. Anyone know of cheap sources of practice steel? I was thinking going to an auto salvage place and trying to get some leaf springs.
>>665005

>>666686
What's /out/'s opinion of those Byrd knives? The cheaper line of Spyderco's? Or is it really worth spending the extra money on a Spyderco over the Byrd?
I like those little Spyderco fixed blades. Their folders have thay goofy shape on the spine of the blade though. I'm thinking about getting a decent folder one of these days. Saw some CRKT on sale at Dick's today that looked cool and almost grabbed it but I'm gonna sit on that idea for awhile and maybe try one of those RATs or something.
I think the CRKT was the Carson M-16 SS. It was kinda slim which was cool looking. Partially serrated blade tho and you guys would make fun of me.
>>666685
Heat treated files or slabs at your local store or online retailer.
They're not very expensive.
>>666694

There's no difference in functionality. If you dont care about the rest the Byrd is fine
>>666697
I agree, the hole on the Byrd blades are even worse than the Spyderco's. And I'm not a fan of the Spyderco look anyway.
The hole just makes it look like a knife you buy for $9.95 at the gas station. That's my opinion at least. I'm sure they are great knives.
>>666694
>What's /out/'s opinion of those Byrd knives?
They're fine, but spydercos branded spyderco are better and tend to have better steels. The steel handled byrds sometimes have rust on them and I don't like how heavy they are.
>I think the CRKT was the Carson M-16 SS. It was kinda slim which was cool looking. Partially serrated blade tho and you guys would make fun of me
With CRKT, their Taiwan made knives tend to be better than their China made knives. The aluminum handled M16s like M16-03S are really nice and come from their Taiwan manufacturing.
>>666685

Spydercos aren't about looks, they are about functionality and comfort. Excellent slicing with that full-flat grind, and excellent control because the handles are usually more ergonomic.
Once you've used one, you'll probably be a convert. I used to think they looked dumb too.
But after buying my first Spyderco, I sold my Kershaws and Benchmades.
>>666679
>Thick full exposed tangs are in my oppinion a waste of material and unnecessary weight
they are usually lightened with cutouts or holes tho.
i think scandinavians in general don't like exposed blades cause of the freezing ass weather.

I'd say that's bad heat treatment where they quench the whole blade at once. Edge should be hard while the back and tang is softer/tougher.

>>665653
>What is the verdict on wet vs dry sharpening?
>>665671
>for stones you usually want to use water or oil to keep the stone unclogged
Here's one that's up for much debate and personal preference plays a big role. Water/oil on the stone keep the bits of metal and stone that have been removed suspended above the stone, but sometimes they get to the blade edge and make tiny nicks. Some people go with wet sharpening because the stones are less trouble to maintain that way, some people go with dry stones because the produced edge is finer and more regular. I go with oil on my coarser stones (220 grit and soft Arkansas), dry on my finer stones (hard and black hard Arkansas). Hit your stones with soap and water and a toothbrush every so often and buildup isn't a big deal either way.
>>666685
>>666695
File blades tend to be too brittle after you harden them again. For the first few, just use a $10 prepared blank like those from northcoastknives.com. Blade steel is available lots of places. Find something you can harden properly at home. 1095 is good, but picky about heat treatment. Same with all three common 440 steels. Try something like 1075 or tool steel.
Pic related, one of my early efforts on a $10 blade blank. Handle is cedar from my own tree branch that was broken in an ice storm. I've been pleasantly surprised with how well it's held an edge.
>>664235
This is my knoif. There are many like it but this one is mine.
Bang for buck I just absolutely love this knife. It's done a stupid quantity of work over the couple of years I've had it and I absolutely love it. The edge retention isn't bad at all but it's still easy to get shaving sharp. Never takes more than a minute or two to do so.
I've beat the fuck out of it with sticks when chopping through heavier stuff and I've whittled a fuck tonne of stuff with it. The very very tip broke off once when I threw it and it struck a steel beam but it's just fine. As I said. Bang for buck the Clipper has always been the tits for me.

He's just starting out. File steel is brittle if it isn't tempered just right and really finicky about being hardened and tempered properly. It's also a bitch to work without softening it first, which is another step he needn't take if he starts with a good piece of steel that's already soft and ready to be worked. Don't be an asshole make it harder for a noob than necessary.
>>665030
These have always put a nice rough edge on my stuff but like the other chap said, I can never really get a top quality smooth edge with it like I can with a stone or ceramic.
>>666623
Bare Grullz knifes sure as heck break at the handle that's for sure
>>667238
yeah those are the school example of fucked up engineering and design and probably bad technology and qc too.
but i think their machetes are the ones that really do break regularly in the handle (especially the parang) at the screw. but plenty off them broke at the blade too.
basically gerber cut down the blade width to one fifth at a certain point just about guaranteeing that it will break there. they also made some of their machetes a not even quarter tang more like a short double rat tang really. if they did this before the hardening the blade will be extremely fragile at that point with less material and lots of surface it would have a faster cool-down than the blade while you usually want the handle part to be softer so it is more shock resistant.
>>667228
frankly they are a bitch to work even after annealing. i made them cherry red in coal and let them buried in the hot coal till morning to cool down slowly, yet it was a pain in the ass to do anything with them.

That's a picture of him? I thought it was supposed to be a funny picture of some wired guy with a long face and a xboxhueg neck.
>>667248
I think the machete was totally the wrong hardness also.
>>667925
As said, the double edge will make it a frickin nightmare. Better off with a small machete or parang, bro. Double edged knives are fighting weapons.

I could take a picture of me with my TOPS Tahoma Field Knife or my Habilis bushtool, but I don't feel like that embodies /out/ as much as the mora meme.
Besides, the photo was taken a while ago and it's the only picture I have of the knoife in question.
>>668876
God damn it 4chan. autoorrecting words into weeb shit.
>>668878
"ƒam" isn't exactly a normal whurd m8
I'm looking for a good smaller knife. I have an Esee 6 and it's great but it'd be nice to also have something that's not so large.
I've been thinking either a Mora or some puukko, though I don't really like the idea of the plastic handles of most Moras. Memes aside, what are your opinions? I'm open to other suggestions as well.
>tfw forgot the pic
>>668903
I'm really liking this thing so far. I feel like it's a good alternative to a folder. Real small, sits on the belt horizontally, I don't even notice it on there until I need it. Plus they are only like $35.
But I don't know all the options. Just saying if you are thinking about something like that, I have no complaints.
>>668912
That's the kind of thing I'm thinking of. How is it for light to medium carving/woodwork?
>>668920
No idea on that. I've only really used it for cutting fishing line and chopping up some carrots and bananas for my bunny. I've only had it for a couple of weeks.
It's only like 6" long total. And they have that little cord thing on the end so you only really grab the handle with 2-3 fingers, and your pinkie wraps around the cord. Interesting design.
Like I said, I see it more as a good replacement for a ~3" folder. That is the first fixed blade I have ever really carried around, and it feels so much more sturdy than a folder and is definitely lighter as well.
>>668920
I liked it so much, when I saw its big brother on clearance for like $30, I grabbed that. Although it is way to big to carry around on my belt unnoticed. So I don't know what I'm going to do with it. I already have that Kershaw in my tackle bag if I need something a little bigger than the SPEW.
>>667071
It's a püükko, a traditional Finnish knife. Couldn't tell you what brand though.
Cryo any good? Or gerber paraframe? Reckon they're intro basic type shit but decent beaters?
Who /GoughCustom/ here?

>>668953
Cryo is fine. I don't have a paraframe.
>>668923
>>668925
Not too sure about the handle size. I have fairly dainty hands by most standards (part of the reason I'm going smaller than the E6), but that might be a tad too small for me to find comfortable. I'd have to try it in person to see. Thanks for the rec, either way.
>>668955

"the moment" is quite relative. Gough's waiting list is 18 months ATM.

The knives suck, so does their steel. You pretty much have to be a retard to see nothing wrong with their shit.

What sucks is that the only off brands for good knives are from China.
Everything else could be a parka from some foreign place and only pay $30 and keep toasty, but knives are either mora, expensive, or shit.

now, where the fuck did you get that vibe?
i wouldn't buy a gerber for their retail price like ever.
doesn't mean all their stuff is useless shit they are just crappy for their price. and they have lots of gimmicky badly designed shit that is prone to failure too.
>>669319
i'm skeptical about this
it would probably cost 4 times a companion heavy duty and i bet your ass it performs exactly the same.
but hopefully somebody does a dual destruction test...
>>669319
Stupid fucking ricasso why why why!?
Lanyard hole further out.
Only comes in Stainless?
I'd prefer a smooth handle like the other bushcraft knives.
Even better would have been a classic Falu red wood handle.
Add another inch on the blade length and make it 4mm thick, at least 3,5.
Would prefer an open leather sheath.
Gör om Gör rätt.
>>669399
But you are not Dave Pathfinder Canteburry neet.

Will they also make it in carbon steel?
>>669453

>>669439
I love the grippy for its ergonomics, I can literally flip it out thanks to the axis lock, that makes it a really handy one hand knives. And yes, they take their time to get sharp, the hollow grind was a bad idea, they should have used flat grind spidy style.
The other thing I like about it is that I got it for years with constant use, and it still works..
These are just my fondling/occasional light use knives, my beaters are a glock knife, mora and a ka-bar FIN fixed blade.
>>669453

Greetings from /o/. Car is cuter than bunny
gonna order some shit from ebay anyone knows of a cheap foldable knife? something like a Sanrenmu
>>670173
>>670177
Pic related is one I saw that was on sale for super cheap on eBay. People around here didn't seem to love Mantis, but it can't be that bad for the price.
What do you guys think of the sharpmaker?
>>670181
it is bad.
They make joke knives, and sell them as serious. Things like a pointless punch dagger (pun intended, pic related), or a karambit balisong with a +5 autism enchantment.
Stop posting that shit already like it's a bargain because you saw some unscrupulous site trying to sell them for 100+ bucks at some point.
>>670190
It's good if your edges are already roughly aligned with the angles it can offer. Both the rough and the fine stones are comparatively fine really. The rough stone on the Sharpmaker is comparable to a 600 grit stone and the fine a 1200 grit. People are often frustrated by the Sharpmaker because such fine stones take a very long time to remove a lot of metal, they're more meant for polishing. Using the edge and the flat of the triangular prism shaped rods that come with the Sharpmaker speed this up a little and you can indeed cheat and wrap different grits of emery cloth around your rods but it's not ideal.
If you want to reprofile quickly you want something more like 120 grit which is extremely rough. I would follow those up with a 220 and a 400 before I sharpened on a 600 like the one that comes with the Sharpmaker.
Overall I would rate it highly if you're looking to maintain folders and knives used for fairly light duty. If you run into any serious damage you need to fix, if something new shows up with a shitty grind or you just want to reprofile for different performance then you're going to have a difficult time.
>>670209
I dare say that would stab perfectly well. Their knives aren't very /out/ but they're not as bad as you two are making them out to be. Stop shitposting and contribute something please.
>>670211
Seconding. Also, they sell some more aggressive stones separately for it.
>>670209
I wasn't saying get that one so much as much as look for a deal like that.
Has anybody actually owned anything by that brand? Def looks more like WOW collector's stuff instead of useful tools.
>>670235
>Has anybody actually owned anything by that brand?
I have two of their knives. They're nothing special and I wouldn't recommend them unless you like odd cheap knives.
>>670213
Yeah, they are as bad as they're making them out to be, unless you're a sociopath or a mall ninja.
>>670235
Had one of their little friction folder a few years ago, they were much the same as any other stainless steel folders.
>>670245
Abloo bloo bloo - That's you Anon, that's what you sound like right now.
>>665381
payed 23 bucks for my spew that said its a good knife with shit steel
>>670258
That's a decent price. I think I paid $30 or $35 at Bass Pro. Other big retailers were wanting $40-$45 for them when I looked online afterwards.
I'm sure I could've found a better price on eBay or something, but that knife was kinda an impulse buy. I was just looking around at Bass Pro and grabbing some fishing stuff and really liked it.
And the steel is whatever. It's a $30 knife. It's not the worst, but it's no ultra-premium $150 blade.
>>669453
Better watch out or mewjahid will get it
>>669602
It's a kershaw JYD 2, the blade is about 3.5 inches. I like it a lot, the action is really smooth.
>>670258
>>670262
Alan Folts is a good designer. If you can't afford the 160+ dollar price tag on one of his knives, the crkt is a decent proxy. You won't get amazing results or edge retention, but it's super easy to get them hair-popping sharp - they just won't stay that way for very long, and the finish is kinda "meh", but for 30 sheckels they're not a bad deal.
>>664235
Can you please spell it correctly at least once, since some people use the catalog and ctrl-f 'knife' to find this thread?
Also, what does /out/ think of these exposed frame knives? Will I have any problems with rust or reliability with this design? Let's say for a backup knife to be in a bag most of the time, and this Gerber 8485 GB-3 was cheap.
>>670349
You're supposed to wrap them in paracord, that's why it's called para frame
The knife (and Gerber's in general) absolutely suck, coast makes similarly priced knives that in my experience are much better, Kershaw and a few other brands are available for like $10-20 more
>just bought my first Mora
>carbon steel craftline 511
Did I fall for the meme? The only other knife I own is a tiny victorinox knockoff
>>670490
no you did well. Mora knives are genuinely awesome knives. You really get more than what you pay for
>>670704
that is only true for the < $10 moras tho
>>670490
moras are great, but carbon steel definitely is a meme
should have went with stainless mora
i can shave the hairs on my arms with stainless, and it hasn't really gotten dull from the use i've given it
>>670719
I'd be asking somebody to delete my post if I said something that fucking retarded as well.
>>664244
Knife is a tool. Retard
>>668959
I've been given a paraframe in each of the three sizes. They're better than the $2 lockbacks from Walmart, but not much.
>>670190
I don't like it as much as I like having a real stone in one hand and a knife in the other, or a nice big stone sitting on a table, but it'll sharpen a knife. I'd advise getting some honing stones instead. Using the same tools our great-grandfathers' grandfathers used to hone an edge appeals to me in many ways. YMMV, of course.
Hello sc/out/s, shut-in here slowly becoming more /out/. Been hiking on and off trails to get into the swing of just being outdoors, want to start getting into camping and maybe fishing if I can find some friends/people who are already into
Looking into a starting knife kit, something basic but not absolute shit.
Thoughts on these? Not sold on anything right now but don't want to spend +$120 on a starting kit. Thoughts on sheathes as well are appreciated
>>670487
This ain't B. You can't wrap the handle on a folder. Also, 'para' is a prefix indicating partial or half. A paraframe has a partial frame with big pieces left out.

Holy shit, this is getting cringey as fuck. Meme knives everywhere. They prepping cancer is spreading at full vapor
>>670763
The reason the Mora is a meme here is that they're so often recommended to noobs. They're recommended to noobs because they are inexpensive without being cheap and will get the job done until you learn enough to develop definite preferences. You can also look into a Camillus or Ontario made PSK. PSK stands for pilot survival knife and they were military issue in the Vietnam era. It's a little brute. I've had mine since the mid-1980s.

The three most important words regarding knives are "don't cut yourself." The next three are "Gerber is shit."
Can finally contribute to one of these threads with something im proud of, i purchased a Ka-Bar and becker BK7 and ive loved using it, by far my favourite outdoors knife.
My six got stripped ;)
>>664235
Was actually about to make a thread asking about knives when I saw this (non native board user can only imagine how often people ask)
Recently have been spending lots of time outdoors hiking and camping in some pretty deep (for me) areas and am trying to keep to minimalist ways and am starting to realize the cheap Gerber I bought isn't doing me much good. It doesn't seem to hold an edge well and I am wondering what /out/ would recommend as an intermediate all around knife? My friends really expensive knives seem to hold themselves for longer and feel great in the hand but I don't think I need to spend $300 on a hobby (so to say) knife.
What would you guys recommend and any places I could look for used knives? I'm sure there are tons of people who buy these pretty knives never use them and sell them.
Pic is totally unrelated; just used it to grab someone's attention
>>671019
Should probably mention looking for ~6" blade and if it's worth it to spend more money on a good knife I'm wanting to. Just sick of this trash that I have now. What are some good brands to look at because Google doesn't really help me much. Unrelated work photo for additional info
What do you guys think about https://www.massdrop.com/r/HT383T
Should I pull the trigger?
I have been using a Buck 110 thats been passed down as my hunter/camper knife (a bit to big to be a EDC)
I have a cheap fold out 2-1/2" CRKT with a pocket clip that i use as an EDC. Shitty knife... great for opening blister packs and other random shit...like fishing out the controller from under the couch when i need a couple extra inches.
Gerber LMF2 coyote brown survival knife that i got as a gift and almost immediately discounted because... well... gerber. But after using while /out/, has proven to be quite useful and holds an edge fairly well. Apart from the serrations, i am actually pleasantly surprised by the LMF2.

As much as people love to shit on reddit here, there's a subreddit (reddit.com/r/knife_swap). Ive used it for a few purchases, and got good deals on nice knives.

>>671060
I've never actually been on reddit but I'll definitely give it a try. I live in an area that glorifies the country lifestyle so everything is really overpriced I'm also in Canada so getting utility knives even though they're everywhere and are an over the counter item it's hard to find good advice. Do you have any recommendations for midrange brands to look for? I don't need something fancy but a good build that will last me is what I'm after. Only kind of sharps I know are my chainsaws
>>671061
Just trying to help a fellow sc/out/ get a nice knife on the cheap
>>671063
I'm actually from Canada too.
I keep my eye out for ESEE knives for used. They're expensive new, but sometimes you can find used ones for really good prices. Also, they have an insane warranty, which covers literally everything, so you don't have to worry what some idiot may have done with the knife previously.
>>671075
Are you the same anon who recommended the reddit forum? Or do you have other areas to look for knives for cheap?
>>671078
Yes i reccomended the reddit sub.
There is also
Kijiji works fairly well. It's nice to meet in person to see and hold what you are buying.
EBay is pretty hit or miss. I'd be weary of fake/knockoff gear.
Then there's other sites such (such as bladeforums) which i believe have a classifieds section
>>671087
I'm near vancouver. Kijiji is unused. We use craigslist and I don't know what brands to search for cause survival knife will turn up norhing
>>671091
Kabar may actually be a good choice. Look at the bk2. 5 1/4" blade. A very well loved knife by a lot of people, though I've never used one. Amazon Canada has it for about $120 CAD.
Mora would likely be a little too short for your taste (most closer to 4" blades)
Ontario knives are similar to esee, but cheaper ( different warranty)
Benchmade makes nice knives, but start kinda higher pricepoint.
Spyderco has all ranges of styles and prices (many may not be too out specific)
But yeah, check out the kabar Becker line, may be a good choice for you.
>>671109
Thanks anon I appreciate the help! Funny enough I just typed in benchmade on my local craigslist and an out the front switchblade brand new is on there. I'm almost tempted for the novelty since they're so illegal in Canada. Get caught with that though and it's a pretty serious charge lol
>>671112
I know the temptation man haha. They seem like a lot of fun, but not " search your butthole when you cross the border" fun. I mean, switchblades are OBVIOUSLY more deadly.
But seriously, hope you find what you're looking for. Post a picture here when you find the winner!
>>671118
No doubt. My old man was rcmp so though I have my way with restricted firearms the old man was very against knives that weren't hunting or survival. He's told me some stories about those punch knives and switchblades that had some pretty rough endings to them. If this knife wasn't up for so expensive I'd grab it just for novelty. As it is though with my gun license the cops can bust my door down without a warrant and even though all my restricted are registered and never misused the switchblade would be what gets all my weapons taken away.
>yay Canada!
>>671121
Damn, must be intense stories. Those push-daggers seem like they would do some real harm.
And i know the feel man, i have my restricted too. I mean, i doubt they'd find a little knife, but it's not worth the risk.
>>671127
Funny country we live in. Looking around I see 20 things in my sight I'd deem way more lethal. I'm gonna scour some local pawn shops this weekend with the brands you suggested in mind. Found a nice spyderco flowing blade on craigslist I might pick up for work. Thanks again for all the info again. Can't thank you enough
>>670487
>>670777
Okay, I'll stay away from Gerber, but how does /out/ feel about the Leatherman folders, Buck folders, or Victorinox SAK?
>>671203
It's been a while since I've played with any Leatherman folders but I wasn't too impressed.
The Buck Vantage is good - for the price. For the price is the important part of that sentence.
SAK's are always super well made knives with great fit & finish. You can't really do better for the price. But they don't have enough cool factor for some people. I love them personally.
Some expensive but really awesome knives in my opinion are the Spyderco Paramilitary 2 and Spyderco Native 5.
Benchmade Axis lock knives are also well built and fun knives even if they aren't as comfortable or good at cutting as Spyderco knives.
>>665599
What's the Black-Yellow-Red one ?
>>671203
Leatherman folder is mediocre. New production Camillus, Buck, and Victorinox are all better. The Buck pocket knives I have are both muskrat pattern, one with a spey secondary and one with a sheepsfoot. I like having two or more cutting blades because I can keep the smaller blade sharpened at a crazy flat angle for when I want something really, really sharp. I have a couple of Buck penknives, but they're not that pertinent to the current conversation. The Trekker and Tinker in the folder thread are mine. They're about as good as you can do for the money. If I was going to go out and buy a pocketknife (which I haven't done in a long time), I'd get a Buck, Camillus, Case, Moore Maker, SOG, or Victorinox depending on what was available when I went into the store. Second tier, meaning cheap but decent, would be Colt or new production Schrade (Old Timer, Uncle Henry, et cetera). I've heard good things on here about Kershaw, Spyderco, Benchmade, and that funny French folder with the locking ring, but haven't owned any of them so I won't recommend them. I can tell you from experience to avoid Remington, Winchester, and Gerber like the plague.
Alright guys, I'm not retarded and I'm not trying to troll or anything here, and I'm not of the autism.
I'm pretty /out/ overall, and I've been on this board since the beginning. I'm very shrewd about my gear and my money. I research what I want, get exactly what I need, and waste no money on the wrong item or redundant items. I don't like having items that overlap much in functionality, because it feels like a waste of money and space and it's overall inefficient. For example: having two rain coats that have different pros and cons instead of finding one perfect coat that has the right cross-section of features.
Anyway, these are my knives and cutting things. Now, obviously the hatchet and multitool are the oddball items with very specific uses, but then we come to the knives. Most of them have been gifts attained over time. The only one I ever seem to really use is the SAK. How come I can't find reason to use the others? I guess what I'm asking is, what is the ideal purpose and intended use of each of these blades?
>>671230
Oi mate, is that Buck Sheepsfoot decent enough for a deck knife aboard a ship?
>>671109

KA-BAR is a glorious knife, I have one from the 40s that cuts anything like butter to this day

I'd love to see a picture when you get the chance!
>>671722
The sheepsfoot is the secondary blade on the muskrat, so it's just over an inch long. Probably not what you're looking for.
>>671716
My dad went /out/ for decades with a 3" stockman, a hatchet, and a good pair of needlenose pliers. I like having a bigger straight knife to process bigger game after I've field dressed it with a smaller knife. I have several of them. I have upwards of 40 folders. Probably 20 to 25 of those are good knives. Most of the good ones find their way into my pocket at least once a month. Just rotate them out.

>>671848
Cool, let's see what model you got
>>671716
kershaw is edc/tactical blade i guess. buck-type folder is primarily a hunter but is can be a good edc/general use thing if that's what you want it for. mora is mainly a bushcraft knife best suited for carving tasks as well as maybe food prep and hunting.
>>671848
That's a really cute bag desu
>>667925
Well it's a weapon and as long as you realize that it's not a tool for being in the woods but a proper weapon for killing large... mammals... then you're somewhat less of a fag. If you like knife fighting it's a great choice. If you don't you would honestly be better off with something that does not offend the murderous instinct of every single knife-dueling opportunist maniac lurking in a ghillie suit mere inches off of any given path everywhere.
>>664235
I bought a Helle scout knife when I was in Norway and fell in love with it. Now a few years later I found it starting to get damaged. The guard is moving around and the blade is slightly loose from the handle ect.
I need help picking a new knife and would like some suggestions. Here's what i'm looking for:
Full tang, scandi blade type (sorry i'm bad at this) and the ability to choke up on the blade.

The only thing I like about the prepping consumerist nightmare is batoning, because it forced manufacturers to build more stout and solid designs.
Dont worry though, if shit DOES happen, "preppers" and cammo-clad autists will be the first to be shot, so it's all good.
>>670768
I have to admit they're Mantis-tier retarded, but I LOVE the white g-10 folder.
I would have bought it right away if I was there.
>>671883
Sorry, forgot about this thread. I got a Tinker. I'm in Japan and was lucky to have a Victorinox store nearby, where they had every model in stock. I'm sorta feeling buyer's remorse for not getting the Tourist with corkscrew instead, since I can easily carry around a phillips screwdriver separately.
>>672754
It is cute, I might even keep the bag. Not sure if every Victorinox store does fancy wrapping, or just the Japanese ones.

Got some o1 steel online. Started making a knife. The handle is kinda fucked up, but I plan on sorting that out this weekend. Fits my hand pretty well, just gotta make the ring finger groove a little bigger.
