I love the look of that.

I already posted in the other thread but here's mine again. It's a '96 Cherokee that I'd like to turn into my /out/-mobile. Any ideas? Planning on a 4" lift, new front and rear bumpers, and redoing some cosmetic stuff on the interior. Here's a pic from yesterday, just got back from a campout.

Something 4x4 that is setup for outing. Good storage area and easy to work on. Those Mercedes trucks are expensive as fuck in the u.s and I doubt you could fix it on your own if something happened while you was out. Personally I like the bronoc

Very bad. When I was working in a quarry I made sure to at least give my truck a good rinse a few times a week. I've had brakes fail because the calipers were packed with dirt and wires break because they had so much dry dirt hanging on them. Those idiots that leave their trucks covered in mud are just destroying their vehicles in the long run

'02 Outback/Impreza, stock

Get some funny looks since i'm clean cut and not a butch dyke or a hippy

It does surprisingly well in most cases. Went up north in California a few months ago for shooting, road was dirt and washed out with potholes, didn't have any trouble. Everyone at the top of the mountain was in a truck.

That said, I want a jeep, bad. And sadly I can't get shit for my subaru because the exterior is fucked (apparently it takes more than five feet to stop when you're going 35 in heavy rain on bald tires).

Any tips for sleeping in your car?
>>
>>664056
I lived in my truck for a while.
Middle of winter in Colorado.
I put on a remote starter that could be set to automatically start the engine and run it for 30 minutes out of every hour when the temperature went below freezing. Pretty useful, especially since I slept with the windows down a little to prevent them frosting up solid at night.

Other than that it's just like camping only less comfortable.
>>
>>664056

Depending on what type of vehicle you're using, I suggest getting something for insulation. The metal sides of older vehicles tend to make the truck/car an icebox, so having something to insulate you from the cold is nice.

I once took the back seats out of a 92 toyota camry, built a little platform to cover the feet area in the back, and slept in that for a few nights. It only got down to 30ish F and damn it was chilly in that car.

Even something like another sleeping bag, some blankets, hell even crumpled up newspaper will just add to your comfort, which is critical for long term car camping

I'm fixing up an old mail jeep. 1974 DJ5-C. I'll do a thread over in /diy/ when it's done. Here's what I have in mind:

>keep original inline 6
>carb rebuild
>hei ignition
>electric fuel pump
>powerglide transmission because it's available and tough and the jeep had a shitty M11 which keeps deding
>adding a rear seat
>15" wheels with 215/70/15 tires
>leaving it 2wd
>painting it green with black on the fenders and bumpers
>rack on top
>bumper mount for deadman jack
>led lights all around
>all new wiring

Got any suggestions for what to add/subtract?

My first time buying a vehicle, '92 cherokee Laredo v6 4.0 High Output, 204k mi., came lifted but pretty much everything else is stock and in awesome shape, I paid $2000 and had a few minor things done... I don't know much about cars though, I do okay? I Drove it over 700 miles this weekend with no problems at all, and gas wasn't as much of an issue as I thought it would be. I folded up a futon (from one of those couch/beds) in the back, and all I had to do was fold the seat down then fold out the futon, and I was pretty damn comfortable. Still haven't taken it serious off-roading, but I sure plan to

This is my new Taco.

Haven't started doing much for mods yet with most of it still under warranty and I've only had it for 3 winter months, make most of my money in the summer. Added seat covers and a bed mat so far. Working on a behind the seat rack/shelf for cargo management/dog bed right now.

Planned upgrades:
Trail armor (sliders/skids/bumpers)
Better tires (on-stock)
Bed rack or cover (with pop-up tent) - probably going to go with a cover for security
Roof-rack
off-road lights, although I'll likely have them fabricated into the bumpers and roof rack

A nice replacement from my 1981 toyota pickup I had in high school. So far I've only been on a southwest US tour with it (Colorado, Utah, Nevada, (LA & Vegas with friends), then back through Zona, NM, Texas, and Oklahoma).

I paid 33.5k for it and had it ordered to my liking. Sure there are cheaper alternatives, but a vehicle isn't an investment for me. I spent what I was willing to of my free money to purchase what I wanted for hobbies I enjoy. Vehicles are a negative investment 99% of the time, just gotta know what you're willing to sink into them. Could be worse, I could have bought a boat or got married.

On the other hand, its capabilities out the door are incredible even with everything at stock. It is 4x4, which is an addition that is almost always worth it unless you'll never go off-road and live in a good climate. Performance wise it isn't much of a change from what they've been making since 2004, but they added a lot of nice little upgrades.

Aftermarket is still mostly being designed, so there aren't many options yet. Tacoma's are great if you like off-roading and wheeling, one of the most supported platforms for aftermarket.

Grind/buff out any started rust spots and re-coat them, preferably with a rust reducing preventing paint.

Fluid film is great for penetrating hard spots and preventing rust, not as effective on spots already rusting. Toyota's for some reason love to rust on their welds, and fluid film works great on that. Look for it in the tools section though and not automotive.

Other than that, once mine was getting to the end of it's life I was grinding down weak spots then welding new steel over sections to try to hold it together. Ultimately that is a bandaid though.

I don't like underbody coatings that are rubberized. Some people swear by them, but I had one on a car I bought and found that a little crack in the rubberizing and water & salt gets in, and just pockets rust.

Check out tacomaworld.com, somewhere they have a giant thread about preventing rust which is amazing... just google it shouldn't be hard to find.

Left my job and hit every state in the lower 48. 25 or 30 national parks and countless national forests, BLMs, etc. 165,000 miles on it now and I only really had 2 issues the entire trip. I ended up spending about $11k. That includes about $1500 for car repairs and new tires. I could have cut that in half pretty easily, but I had about $30k in the bank so I wanted to enjoy myself. Lots of good booze, decent meals from time to time, sometimes splurge on a hotel room if it wasn't a rip off and had a nice view. Gas is half as expensive now as it was, so I'm bout to just pack up my life in my Jeep this time and find somewhere out west to find work and move. Sick of living close to a big city and dealing with traffic and negroes basically.

Was a great trip and now I have a chance to do it again, except this time I'm going to wander and end up just settling down where I enjoy and can find a decent job. Also, this time I know where I'd like to visit and where I can afford to pass on this trip. Got the wanderlust, it's addicting shit.
