My family hates that I do solo hikes around Wisconsin. They say that I am asking to be murdered by going hiking alone. There have been a couple famous murders with hikers being killed on trails, and bodies are found every once in a while trails around the state.

Do you think that solo hiking is dangerous, as far as other humans are concerned?
>>
Solo hiking? Christ, your family must be ultra paranoid or watch too much Fox News. I could understand if you were camping alone but are you seriously supposed to limit yourself from going outside because of the fear that someone might want to kill you? That's such backwards logic that I'm legit shocked.

Buy some pepper spray if it makes you feel safe, but the truth is you're probably way safer taking a hike than you are driving a car, walking down a busy street, going to any public place, etc. the chances of something bad happening are so small they're not worth fretting about, and the sad truth is it just comes down to wrong place at the wrong time which is totally out of your control. The best you can be is prepared, so buy some sort of self defense item to carry with you.

how easy is it to get a pistol in Wisconsin?
buy a .22 pistol and practice with it. shooting cans with a .22 is the shit
>>
>>655763
I've been wanting to buy a handgun, but just don't have the money for it right now. I just bring a baseball bat with me.
>>
>>655761
>or watch too much Fox News.
Go back to /pol/ you fucking idiot.
>>
My family says that the economy is terrible in Wisconsin right now and a ton of people are on welfare. So they stay at home watching porn, going loony, and becoming more prone to deviant behaviors. They did just find a body on a trail a couple months ago around here.
>>
Of course it's dangerous. If you get injured and stuck, you might not be able to make it out or find help by yourself. You're also a bigger target for predators, both 2-legged and 4-legged.

A lot of people bring a gun. That might help, but you're unlikely to use it. I usually carry a .357 revolver (literally) loaded for bear.
>>
>>655765
>baseball bat
Nigga really? You can get a decent pistol for 300 bucks.
>>
>>655772
I saw a used pistol at my local gun shop a couple months ago, almost bought it. Can anyone suggest a cheap entry level hand gun?

/k/ here. There are a lot of pistols you can get used but there are also new options that are really cost effective.
>glock 26

>ruger sr9c
Those are all great self defense options against humans. Doesn't sound like you're worried about wildlife but worth pointing out that none of those are bear guns.

Handgun should be a .380 for self defense and lightweight hiking. If you want to have something with a little more umf I recommend .38 special revolver. Arms list for WI is generally decent (Green Bay) and not to expensive. I knew a guy who brought a .45 everywhere and it ended up being a little too much. People will always complain about one caliber vs. another, but besides the crazy rare instances where someone takes a COD Amount of bullets and survives, marksmanship will always be the key.
If you're really that worried about it than go to a local range and ask to shoot a couple pistols in different caliber a or ask a friend/family friend to teach you.

OP, I've hiked in Wisconsin my whole life without so much as someone trying to bum a smoke. Sure, that's anecdotal as fuck and there's always the risk that people are unpredictable and that our local economy is kind of in the shitter, but the bad places are always the same places. As long as you're not hiking at night through Milwaukee, Racine, Beloit, or Janesville, you have very little to worry about. I just carry a knife.
>>
>>655765
Baseball bat? Really?

Just get a bomb ass walking stick. Carve one yourself for maximum neato-ness.

Doesn't look out of place, and if you learn some Bo-Staff techniques you can be lethal as fuck with it nigga

Lurk >>>/k/ for a while and post a thread.

Regardless whether people like to poke fun at /k/ there are actually some knowledgeable people there.

Let them know what threat you are expecting, if you want detatchable magazines or a revolver, and if weight is an issue.

Larger Calibers are heavier guns, but most people will tell you that even a 9mm is more than enough to take something out.

Know that larger calibers have more recoil that can hinder accuracy with sustained fire if you aren't prepared for it. Practice with your pistol and practice firearm safety.

Underneath all the fanboying, /k/ will tell you which companies to stay away from.

You can get a good pistol for ~$400

Carve a gun into the walking stick and you could be invincible. Or start chanting and waving the stick around. Become a Druid

This.

Tell your family to stop watching so much TV.

As for self-defense, get a gun and learn to safely use it. Take a course if you can. You're in America, dammit.
>>

Wouldn't pol love faux because it's predominately right wing fear mongering news?
>>
>tfw live in noguns country

do they need accountants in Wyoming?
>>
>>655760
Why can pretty much all of the free world go hiking without a gun, just amerifriends can't?
>>
>>655760
It is more dangerous driving to the grocery store.
>>
>>655891
Fox news has more ratings than all the others combined so it is quite popular but its still quite leftist /anti American. So I would imagine pol would hate them less than ABC/CBS/pmsnbc/cnn
>>
>>655925
Foxnews placates the people for the far right. It helps keep the ignorant left and normies in check.

They aren't even a news station.

Hey op, here is my list:

Uber poor: highpoint 45
Not as poor: Beretta px4 or a smith and Wesson 40vd of a smith and Wesson sheild.
Ruger lc9 is also an ok choice

I'll check these out. I know my local gun dealer as a used taurus .357 for $250. But I would have to drive out to rural Wisconsin and go pick it up from him, which freaks me out. Something about picking up a gun from a stranger in the middle of no where rubs me the wrong way. I've also read that Taurus are garbage
>>
>>656059
Yeah, taurus, while not the worst, are far from the best. 357 is a good size though for innawoods.

1) Get a dog

2) Get a pistol

3) Get bear spray

4) Get a decent walking stick.

Those are things you can do immediately. Some sort of self-defense/ situational awareness training could also help, and training in a combat sport will more than prepare you for some jerkoff trying to swing on you. ( Spend a few years fighting, and every non-fight moves like a drunken toddler...) (if the guy has a knife, though, you are better off running)

Also, tell your family to stop worrying so much. You can take all the precautions in the world, but you'll still never be 100% safe. Just go live your life.
