Just going to going around the south Island. Doing some walks in Authers Pass, Mount Aspiring and Aoraki national park.

Nothing crazy but I'll be on my feet a fair bit and want something better then my shitty Adidas that I've got.

I've been before but spent most of the time chilling and just enjoying the sights.

I climbed Mount Warning and Mount Barny in Australia in freeruns and it was the worst decision of my life.

Look at Meindl Makalu Pros or equivalents preferably with a rand around the lower upper of the boot. The shale cuts boots to pieces.

I personally use Haix Nebraskas to hunt in the North Island, off the track Alpine in the South Island I think I would go a plastic alpine boot.

Just get some trail runners Grandpa. No one wears boots anymore

combat boots are terrible, no matter the price point. They take eternity to break in, and by a segment, they really are not good for posture, movement or joint pressure. Further, you will likely find out they dont have the quality, fit and finish that a $150+ boot should have. In any case, combat boots are the lowest form of /out/ing shoes available. Virtually ALL "special operators" will adopt Trail boots when the privilege is granted.


look for: Salomon, Asolo etc.. high top boots and save your self the dissapointment of $200 Danners that you will never want to wear.

Not OP, but what about durability? Do such sneaker-boot hybrids hold up the test of time? I'm usually going through a pair of regular sneakers/runners in a couple months before they start falling apart, and I only wear them casually, meanwhile my combat boots from conscription times have been lasting me 10 years (to be fair I don't wear them as often, but a lot when hiking or gardening)

I got about 500 miles backpacking on a pair of asics trainers. With tennis shoes you just can't get the ultra light weight ones. Sneaker boots are stupid. Go for trail runners, they have comfort, durability and lightweight

Consider getting lowa gtx zephyrs instead of boots people from /fa/ wear through the snow to the subway.

Combat boots are a jack of all trades, master of none. They are designed to work in almost any given situation, but that's it.

I much prefer walking shoes. If waterproofing is important to you, or you particularly need ankle support/protection, then walking boots are a good idea.

Any of the big names will probably have something better than combat boots.

No waterproofing is best if you can get away with it.

Well I really like my Lowa boots which are the new lightweight sneaker type boots. They are super comfy and works in pretty much any terrain you can realistically use them in, other than deep snow.

People needs to stop using this nebulous term, seriously.

The trend over the last decade has been for more upscale boot companies to shift to a more hybrid design, in fact a lot of nice combat boots (like Lowa) are just hiking boots with a tan color scheme.

Also, another reason "operators" often choose hike boots is because they look much more low profile than a set of tan boots.

Anybody use Merrel Fraxion boots?

I'm pretty happy with the moabs for spring/summer day hiking but I've been doing a lot more hiking on rock and now snow and none of my boots will cut it. I'm going to the store tomorrow to check them out anyway but just wondering if any sc/out/s used them

I've been happy with these, had them about 6 months and people ask if they are new. I'm not hiking miles at a time but I go kick shit and they have yet to bust anywear.
I wear them to work, but sometimes take them off because of the foot sweats.
Very water, step in the mud cause I can.

Furthermore, you in addition to rain, you have to deal with lots of rocky trails some of which is just entirely scree. Pic related is part of the Avalanche Peak Crow-River route. After ascending the top of Avalanche peak you beeline along the ridge north before heading down this scree west towards the river.

When descending or ascending shit like the scree you'll need boots with a good leather outer-sole that will take all the sharp stones without penetrating the boot.

Military boots will not cut the mustard on this kind of stuff. I would know, I've also been in the military and those kinds of boots aren't designed for this kind of hiking.

Going through trails this tears through military style boots. This trek is normally a two one, where you'd stop at the hut in pic related for dinner. I took the option of getting there at around lunch time and carried on down the river to loop back to the Arthurs pass village before sunset.

These were the boots I took for my trip.

They did the job fairly well for the three month trip, which included a pretty hardcore trek, the Northwest Circuit on Stewart Island. The right boot suffered a small amount of peel back at the toe of the boot after this one though.

That said, I didnt take these boots on any major treks after this and when I did visit NZ a second time during winter which was just chilling out around Queenstown, the sole on the left boot deteriorated and was slightly peeling off without being under any stress.

The boots finally died just recently when I went on the Annurpurna trek in Nepal. The upper part of the boot was fine, it was rather the soles that were tearing apart.

Take that into consideration.
You will want waterproof boots.
You will want quite sturdy boots
Make sure your soles are good.
Make sure they are comfy too.

Are Nike SFB good for short day trails? I live in Hawaii so there's nothing super intense. Gets kinda wet and muddy here though so idk how they grip in those conditions.
