Well, lemme tell you a little story.
I 1998 I went to Death Valley for a week over Xmas.
Temps in 50s-60s during day. Down below 10 at nite.
Froze my ass off.
Swore it would never happen again.
Came home and did a bunch of research on Internet and purchased for $850 in 2004 a really great minus 40 bag.
Best piece of gear I own.
Yes it's overkill, but I am never cold in winter.
I camp every winter in southern Utah--will be going again next week.
I would not do this without this bag.
One year, it was minus 9 Xmas nite in Moab and I was fine.
When I camp in fall, I use my summer bag (rated for 10 or 20, can't remember), but then I put it inside a really cheap minus 40 bag that I bought at Dick's for something like $40 (that tells you it's not a real minus 40 bag).
The bag-in-a-bag works ok down to about 20 or so.
The thing you must understand is that for whatever the bag is rated for, you need to add AT LEAST another 10 degrees on the high end of the temp rating.
Good Luck--I would say don't scrimp on the bag.
Nothing worse than being too cold to sleep.
The only thing I hate about my minus 40 bag is having to step out of it in the morning.
Do some research--don't buy the first bag you see. I special ordered my bag.
