A really good one I saw and havnt been able to find was an episode where the guy had to make a fire in the rain using firesticks. That is probably something everyone should learn to do just in case.

All he did was anneal it. That is exactly what you do with nothing more than a campfire. You are not making a hardened edge. It would work very well fora first tool in that situation. It can be sharpened and stay sharp long enough to perform quite a few tasks before needing to be sharpened again. He's also not quenching it for heat treating since it wouldn't be hot enough for that purpose. He'd just be cooling it down to work with it by hand.

It is the same thing with the knapping. He isn't using the proper tools or proper methods, but it will get the end result he needs for the limited task that needs to be done in the short amount of time.
