Anyone have any good recommendations for a good shell under $180.00 USC.
my Mountain Hardware Plasma was just not durable enough. It would have been the best jacket i had ever owned if it didnt puncture so fucking easy. at the rate it tears in about 3 weeks or so it will be more ripstop tape than jacket.
You could give their softshell a look. The Mixaction Dry.Q Elite Jacket is going for around your stated price on Sierra Trading Post. The softshell is going to be more durable but not as warm/waterproof if you are planning on using it to just stand in a rainstorm though.
I am in the market for a new shell myself as my old one is getting pretty ratty and I don't know if I'd trust it in a real storm anymore. Haven't used the Mixaction before so if anyone has used it before or knows a better alternative let me know.

What's a shell? Just a top layer waterproof?
What are you using it for? How waterproof does it need to be (I.e. how rainy is your area)?
The Marmot Precip is the first thing that comes to mind. It's basically the Mora of jackets, from the perspective of someone who thinks Moras are good value and functional for what most people need. However, if you already have issues with tearing your jackets, it may be better to opt for a "true" 3 layer hardshell, which will be more expensive and a little bit heavier, but will be very durable and fully weatherproof.

thanks- sorry i bailed on the thread.

waterproof would be very clutch but ill settle for water resistant.

everyday use and fairly regular trail use. Im not lead climbing but i do enjoy a good boldering sesh.
also lots of cool weather kayaking so it would be nice if i could fit it comfortably under a pfd.

>ill settle for water resistant
Isn't that a waste of time?

sometimes- but a lot of featherweights don't double seal or use the extra tape so they call themselves "water resistant" even tho they are probably more waterproof than what some big box companies call waterproof.

I've got this. It's fucking great and has good reviews everywhere I've looked, also pretty cheap and fully waterproof

Def not waterproof. Basic college kid rain jacket. I had one for awhile, after 30 minutes in an average rain it is saturated.
Pity, I liked the burn orange color and the fit

was it wetting out, or was it actually letting water in?
>>646317
X2
I like my precip
>>646737
did you find one that wokred better?
>>646737
Well mine is, yours must have been faulty :^)
>>646746
I'm not sure what you mean. The fabric was saturated. I was pretty wet underneath. I even did a reapply of DWR or whatever on the new jacket.

Yeah, I got the Outdoor Research Foray for $50 on sale and it is 10x the jacket. Pit zips go all the way down to your hip for "poncho mode" and the fit isn't quite as "athletic." The pockets and other zippers also have the "waterproof" zipper which se people hate but I prefer. Plus OR has a lifetime warranty. I am not sure what Marmot's is.

wetting out would mean the fabric getting saturated, but the membrane would still prevent water from getting in if it were intact. letting water in.. well, that means water form the outside actually penetrating the jacket
remember that if the face fabric is saturated, the then jacket can't breathe, and the jacket is no better than a rubber jumper as far as evaporating your perspiration.

Just got this Patagonia men's FOGOULE. Seems great hasn't really poured yet.
Thoughts?
>>647324
it's a patagonia. some products might not be the best value at their price point, but they're all good quality.
>>647324
How much was it?
>>647327
124.
>>647328
Good job, that's only 20 more than my precip. Most of them online are closer to 200

best jacket i ever had
two hours in pouring rain this thing is completely soaked and im dry inside
it also completely dries in cup of tea time
it seems to also be burn resistant to some extent because im a smoker and no holes and burn marks yet
keeps warmth in winter but i wear it all year round since it has zipped openings on arpits so vents very well in spring or autumn
