I've had luck with polartec.

Your shoes should be appropriate for the kind of environment you're going to be wearing them in and you should also be comfortable as well as durable. So don't go too cheap. Get yourself something that will last you a few years at least.

I like mine. They aren't great boots but they're good cheap boots. Better, drier and cheaper than my fucking cloth Moabs that only lasted 6 months of serious walking.

Why not sneakers/runners? Boots are too stiff/heavy and have too little ventilation for hot weather. I know boots are tougher but I've had decent runners last for 3+ years.

I hear 4D and 4D 2 fit the same. 4D 2 being slightly lighter.
I'm not aware of any differences besides colour, that doesn't mean there aren't any.
Also: the desert forces models don't have goretex.
