Mycology General? I've seen a few separate threads about mushrooms, this board is slow as hell so I might as well just make a general every few weeks

Will start off with posting a few finds

>Ganoderma Applanatum
>Inedible, sort of hard and grows on decaying wood
>Can be used as an art medium (Scratching or scraping the white area of the fungus scrapes off the pores to a more dark brown colour

>Trametes versicolor or 'Turkey tail'
>edible, but unpalatable
>Eaten by some maggots and caterpillars

Some sort of boletus that was most likely edible

Apparently the rule is if it follows these three
>a small piece doesn't taste bitter
>doesn't bruise blue
>doesn't have a red stalk
Then you can eat it

these pics were all sent to me from a friend who knows I like identifying mushrooms while they were hunting, so I couldn't take a spore print or anything, otherwise I probably would have tried to identify them better and eat them if they were edible.

Definitely something I'd be interested in, but I think the reason why it's difficult to keep a board going is because mushrooms are pretty regional. I remember hearing about a foreign family dying after eating mushrooms in the US that looked like edibles from where they lived previously.

I think that at best, we could get a handful of people talking about recipes or general topics like using net collection bags to help spread spores, but sharing identification tips and comparing species without being region-specific could cause fatalities in the community.

>a small piece doesn't taste bitter

>only a sit deals in absolutes
I don't think it's wise to rely on these kinds of descriptions when choosing to eat a mushroom you can't positively ID. While this may be true (and the really poisonous boletes are easy to avoid), it's no substitute for a dichotomous key.

I disagree in part.
I'd love to see what people are finding, regardless of region.

May we could post a pic of where we go for good hunting? It'd be cool to see what productive mushroom spots look like in different climates.

Pic related. Coastal Sitka spruce forest in the pacific northwest. Second growth, but pretty old. Excellent chanterelle hunting.
>>
>>634539
true, but identifying a bolete that looks like this is nigh impossible without microscopy, and the general rule is created to error on the side of safety by experienced mycologists. So there aren't any known boletes that would follow these rules and be poisonous.

Of course you shouldn't just eat random mushrooms you aren't sure of, but these rules only apply when a dichotomous key can't be followed without a microscope or something

Ottawa valley, in a small patch of forest with a small creek that runs through it.

found this one, but I wouldn't be caught munching on it with those brown spots on it though

What park do you use man? I live in the valley myself and I'm trying to find places to go /out/ and your area looks nice.

this is Kennedy-Craig forest, it's in Ottawa (Barrhaven to be exact)

It's not exactly the best place to go /out/ though;

It's littered with shit like this (Small unfinished shelters or hangout spots, couches, beer cans, fire pits, et cetera) because the city barely services it, it's very small and the creek is tiny so hunting and fishing are not viable, and people walk their dogs and bike along the paths constantly so if you want to do something that could get you in shit with the bylaw you most likely can't unless its cold out or in the morning/late at night. People's houses are also alongside one end of the forest and a farmers field on the other end, so loud noises aren't a great idea (Someone might call the bylaw officer). It's basically just a nice, short trail, isolated from the bylaw or police unless someone specifically calls them. It's nice, but it's not good enough for most /out/ activities besides foraging and for nice walks. There are fires lit here constantly though so I'm sure you could get away with that, nobody really seems to care but some people are dickheads and you never know if they'll call the police

I'm not sure where you live specifically but if you're in Ottawa the Greenbelt looks pretty good

Also Algonquin Park

-Northeast USA
-Cap yellow to mustard brown
-Yellow stem
-Has pores also yellow to mustard brown
-Had a ring/skirt
-The "meat" inside the cap was white to pale yellow
-The cap seemed to be a classic convex type shape but a bunch of the mushrooms had like "warped" caps like when cardboard gets wet and then dries or a vinyl record left in a hot car.
-They were growing under conifers

Any ideas bros ? Trying to identify my first one here and my guides aren't proving too useful.

upon further research appears to have been a Larch bolete, not sure of what species though. Thing is there were a couple different types of conifers in the area but they were all still green, aren't larches supposed to shed their needles by now ?
>>
>>635379
upon further, further research I have no idea what species it is. there were no larches in the area, looked to be growing on the roots of a pine.

I am pretty confident of its genus at least, Suillus.

I'm really surprised that I haven't seen Chicken Mushrooms (aka chicken of the woods). Not to be confused with Hen of the Woods. This mushroom has the texture of cooked chicken and soaks up flavors easily. I cut these up, soak them in chicken stock and just fry them a bit.
