Trying to find a good gift to get an /out/ friend of mine. So lets talk about possible /out/-related gifts to get. Post what you want for christmas and what you are planning on getting others.
>>
Basically anything from Light My Fire:
-fire steel, sporks, tinder, cups/bottles

Also can't go wrong with a stainless steel bottle or cup.

Zippo's are nice too.

Light My Fire has some neat stuff. I'll probably get this for him.

This as well.
>>
>>633774
any /out/ related article of clothing is always nice.
I'm probably gonna get a jet boil/camp stove. Been just using straight fires, but I figure a stove is gonna make boiling water way easier.

All I want is this.

I don't really know any /out/folk (not anyone that I buy gifts for anyway) so I guess I don't have to worry about it. Maybe I'll join the gift echange thread when we get closer to the holidays.

I just read some reviews about this.. "Not bright enough to read a book" was a main complaint. My two cent if you get this.. Make your own candles! Theres a way to mix borax and methanol and mix it into your wax to get you a bright burning flame.

And if you wanna be cool. Add copper sulfate to that... Lol
>>
>>633874
>mix borax and methanol
DONT FUCKING DO THIS. MY COMPUTER HAS A BUNCH OF VIRUSES NOW.
>>
>>633790
Cool, I already have the hotdog/marshmellow skewer style, very compact, uses gathered stick.
>>
>>633874
it's not for reading anon, it's purely for comfies

also that looks really dangerous >:|

Get him pregnant
>>
>>633774
the knives i ordered from nepal about three months ago but were send to the wrong fucking continent.
>>
>>633774

I'm making lil survival kits. Just ordered five Esee 4's for the blade. I need to find a good bag to go along with it. Any suggestions guys? 100 bucks tops for each bag.
>>
>>634001
i think the esee 4 is a 100 bucks alone or more yo you are done
>>
>>633783
I wouldn't get a zippo for going out. The fuel leaks too fast.

If you want to get a nice lighter, get something that's butane. It holds fuel for much longer, and has some intense flames.
>>
>>634323
butane zippo storm-lighters are sweet
wish they were cheaper
>>
>>634338
Can you link to one?

The only thing I can find by zippo in butane is the candle lighters.
>>
>>633774
/out/ patches
>>
>>634272

I'm not done. I'm a Master Plumber, 100 bucks is not that much, specially when you save up over the months. Plus these ppl been in my life for yrs, so they are worth it.
>>
>>634323
yes Naphtha evaporates but it doesn't leak fast. My experience refueling Butane lighters has been a huge pain in the ass while refueling my zippo couldn't be easier. Sure, you can't rely on packing away a zippo for months and having fuel but its never been an issue for me.
>>
>>633788
That's pretty neat
>>
>>636253
lol you know for survival kits cheap blades are best. they should have an edc of some quality anyways the kit knife is in play on the off chance that something goes wrong not according to plans.
putting a top of the commercial line knife in a bag is just retarded to me unless you are literally so rich it makes no difference to you that it's a kitchen knife or an esee.

if you said you bought the bear grylls ultimate pro (which is a waste of good money for me) for a bag that's a slightly different story cause those are more of a compact survival oriented kit in themselves than knives (and could provide redundancy in a compact form) and while they would be not that good for a heavy lifelong use of outdoorsy stuff, in a survival situation a blade is a blade especially when you can sharpen it so easy (even if you are a retard or never sharpened anything ever).

tldr don't make a good knife into a bag knife. good knives should be used, bag knife is a backup.
>>
>>636386
>tldr don't make a good knife into a bag knife. good knives should be used, bag knife is a backup

depends, once you have practiced enough with your good knife you should rotate it out to conserve it. a good knife will last you your whole life but not if its the only one you ever use.
>>
>>636407
i don't think i would ever use a knife enough that even a shit knife gets used up, but that is also a strategy.
i just feel like it's an absolute waste to put quality knives into survival kits. survival kits should be cheap because statistically you will never ever use them in your life unless for convenience.
>>
hey guys, didn't want to make my own thread so I figured I'd drop it here. I live in SC and am looking for a midlayer/outerlayer for winter. I'd like to try winter camping, so preferably it would be a jacket to use around campus/social outings and also while camping or skiing. It probably won't ever get colder than 0-10ºF. Budget is under $350 for either a midlayer/outerlayer or whatever I can grab that would fulfill this.

Thinking about getting a merino wool layer and the PolerStuff Scout jacket but other recommendations are very welcome.
>>
>>636956
you can get a nice hunting jacket with removable liner for that price.
>>
>>633840
this is my first time on this board.

theres a gift exchange thread? that is so sweet <3
>>
>>636965
Those are a bit too heavy/pack too small for backcountry camping/backpacking
>>
>>636991
I am confused you say you want cold weather gear but don't actually need cold weather gear ?
>>
>>636993
Like I said, it's South Carolina. It doesn't really get that cold. Something like a pretty mild softshell is fine.

I think I've settled on either the Patagonia Adze Hybrid of the North Face Apex Bionic. Question though, I wanted to get the hooded version since I'll use it as an outlayer for most of the year. It's not water resistant enough to use it as an outerlayer during really rainy times though, is it easy to wear a hooded hardshell over a hooded softshell? Do the hoods become a bitch?
>>
>>633876
HURRY! DELETE SYSTEM32!!!

Also, what would copper sulfate do?
>>
>>637018
better get the hoodless. with the hood just makes it so heavy and harder to pack.
>>
>>637020
damn that's what I was afraid of. So hoodless and just grab a precip or helium II or something?
>>
>>637022
also would it possibly also be smart to instead get the hooded softshell since I know I'll sometimes use it as an outerlayer and then just get a not hooded hardshell?
>>
>>636327
hmhm.
How about a hoagie?
>>
>>637019

Make fire green
>>
A few items from 5.11 Tactical. A kabar military grade knife
>>
>>633774
Do you want to make your gifts or buy them? I'd try making some EDCE fire starters. Make some for yourself too and wind up with an effective/low-cost gift. See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kQQSltAhKSE &
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mcXCKqjV3Ec

BudgetBugout made a video in regarding things he'd love for Christmas if he didn't own them. Most items are under $50 and might be worth a looks. See
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CsoGI6R-G2Q

He also has a video on a pretty cool "Altoids-tin" S.N.A.P. emergency kit made by TOPS that features an I.C.E. card, knife/fire-rod and many other goodies for about $60. See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JOf5FfhHGz0

Now we're into the $50+ price-range it may be worth looking @ cookware and knives. I myself am looking at adding some cookware into my camping set ( see my thread on " Best "outdoor" stoves..." ) & the backpacking stoves from Bushcraft Essentials, EmberLit, Firebox, Solo Stove and TOAKS seem nice and range from $20 to $150.

See the Bushbox varients
http://www.bushcraft-essentials.com/english/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mSKgZB5irOE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1rxdOvP_c2U

You can see the EmberLit stoves ( the original and the Fire Ant ( I'd want the Fire Ant ) http://emberlit.com/

Firebox recently launched their second generation stoves which are highly improved. See them at http://www.fireboxstove.com/
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6zsgv9j5czU

Solo Stoves or TOAKS are the stove(s) I want most. Made to fit inside the cookware (TOAKS reknown for theirs ( pots/pans/sporks ) they heat and what I've heard about both products is good. http://www.solostove.com/

Gift exchange thread
>>
>>639316

I miss-pasted but as it happens that post is actually in the gift exchange thread
>>
>>633774
In regards to my last post ( >>639307 ) I think what I'd want most are the Wax-dipped fire-starters, the S.N.A.P. kit, and either the Solo Stove Titan/Solo Stove Pot 1800 or the full-sized TOAKS Ti backpacking WB Stove/one of the TOAKS cooking combo sets.

Just because I'm curious to see what other people have to say on this topic I'm going to bump.

I hope you my other posts ( >>639307 and >>639330 ) are helpful to you all!
>>
>>633783
Don't get a zippo. It dries out in a week. Unless you like the idea of having to refuel often during the trip, stick to a regular butane lighter from the gas station.
