Thought I'd share this with /out/.

Was at Kohls today (dept store in USA for those down under, across the pond, or south of the border). Found a packable down jacket, Heat Keep brand, for $50.

650 goose down fill, very light, and packs to about the size of a grapefruit or less.

It's not an amazing jacket as far as jackets go, but I've never seen a packable real goose down jacket for less than $150. Picked one up, will go in my pack, take up very little space or weight, and should work well.

Stuff sack included. Bic pen for comparison. Available online as well as in store.

Mine had a thread that was pulled a little, gave me another $5 off it.

Nice find.

Here it is compressed, could go smaller, this is just squeezed with my hand.

I like it. I like how packable it is, and I'll probably even sleep with it in cold nights. When it's in the stuff sack, it would actually make a decent little down pillow.

Keep in mind, this is definitely a light jacket. Not a winter jacket by itself. But for cool nights, or as a layer under a hard shell... can't beat it.
>>
i've been seeing these around in unexpected places - macys, old navy, etc. i haven't bought one but i tried one on at macys and it was warm as fuck... and super light. i was pretty impressed honestly
>>
>>633366
My pops got a few of that exact same product from K-mart for $37 each.
>>
>>633366
not bad. I bought one from superstore in canada which is joe fresh in the US. It was clearance for 20$. I figured what the hell and threw it in my trunk. It's kept friends warm on late fishing nights no complaints. good buy thought OP.
>>
Never understood the appeal this style of coat, looks like you are wearing the liner of a coat around instead of an actual coat.
>>
>>633421
that's the general idea behind layering, so yeah
>>
>>633421
as >>633479 said, that's exactly the purpose.

for backpackers and hikers, it's wonderful to have a very warm layer that packs down tiny and weighs very little. compared to fleece that hardly compresses at all. puffy jackets also tend to be very wind resistant.

For the guys in Europe:

Meru Gander. About 50 euros, awesome jacket.
>>
>>633421
It's not really for fashion, I don't like the "look" either, but it's amazing how warm something like this is, when you can pack it down to the size of a grapefruit.

Think of it this way. It's warmer than a fleece coat, but takes up 1/2 the pack space, and weighs 1/2 as much.
>>
i got a down puffy at costco for 50 bucks 2 or 3 years ago. Packs small, warm, wind resistant, and i'm not as worried about fucking it up as i would be a $200 brand name version, so i actually have fun while wearing it /out/
>>
>>633650
OP here. Kind of my idea too.

A $200 down jacket I don't really want to mess up. A $45 one, not so bad.
>>
>>633515
thanks dude been looking for something like this
>>
Gonna swing by Kohls today.
>>
>>634616
So I was a little late, but went today and SCORE! $50, 90%down, 10% feather jacket.

Op is based.

QUALITY VARIES!

I checked four before I got a second one withouut flat spots. Fill stuffing is poir in some. The second one was a digfferent color than the first and may have been stuffed better.

Check a couple. I am very happy with my new, cheap puffy!

OP here. Glad you like it. I wore mine today in 25 deg weather, with just a base layer I was warm.

Can't complain about mine. The one i got seems like the fill is good. What color did you get anon? Post pics.

Moon rock grey. It IS an img bd after all!

Not my first choice, but after the 'pat down' test, most puffy/best filled.

I don't really care about color and axshually, it's ok. Gotta spray water proofing silicone spray and get a hardshell or steal back my g/f's.

Good value, very warm minimalist puffy.

I layer too but usually the mid layer I just use something sturdy that can serve as a good outer layer on its own like a hoodie, flannel, sweater, etc. Yeah they don't back down as much but not really an issue to leave a tiny bit more room in my pack or strap it to the outside.

Just my 2 cents though.
>>
>>633515
Quechua X-Light also a very good jacket
>>
>>635627
Got a look at it with sunlight through it; very even fill in the back and front ribs. More the a couple of others on the rack.

Did a 30 minute ride in this morning, frosted windows, so ~30*F. A bit thin, even with Morino dress sweater, long sleeve dress shirt and wife beater.

Truck heater is out, so I've been using my parka. This did ok and I love the weight!

Thx op!

So im looking for a puffy waterproof jacket with a hood thats under $150. Basically I like in the northwest and I need something beefier then a rain shell but not so much a full winter jacket... becuase I have both. Something like a cheaper version of pic related.

So far the best option ive found is this: http://www1.macys.com/shop/product/weatherproof-32-degrees-packable-down-jacket?ID=2361550&pla_country=US&CAGPSPN=pla&CAWELAID=120156340003430661&catargetid=120156340001348476&cadevice=c&cm_mmc=Google_Mens_PLA-_-Men%27s+Apparel+-+32+Degrees_Jackets-_-65069003225_-_-_mkwid_UWb9WVGS|dc_65069003225|-|UWb9WVGS

If its cheap but not waterproof I could just take it and NeverWet it, but id prefer not to.

Any suggestions?
>>
>>636164
> neverwet
> the perfect treatment
> rather not
>>
>>636167
Id prefer a layer that comes waterproof instead of me having to treat it every 6 months. Plus the bottle of NeverWet I have is rated for shoes not jackets (Dont think there's much of a discernable difference though. ) and I dont want to apply something that might eat through the jacket.
>>
>>636164
Most the puffy jackets like that, that are any good, are down. Down isn't good wet since it loses its insulation. It's the biggest downside of down (get it? Downside? Sorry).

They work well with a waterproof outer shell, with the puffy part providing the insulation.
>>
If you're on the fence about this jacket..... it's now marked down to $40 at Kohls.

Not sure if it's black friday only or not, but is available online.
>>
>>636164

Holy shit, this is marked down to like 45 during Black Friday. I'm in the same boat as you OP, in PNW so need something to keep me warm and dry as rain comes and goes so frequently it's pretty much a common thing to plan around.

Hope some other sc/out/s can make a comment, but I don't see how you could go wrong dropping less than $50 on it.

Glad I got my Ghost Grey jackie, even at $50.
>>
does anyone have any experience with the Alpkit jackets? The Filoment jacket is £99 and looks like it could be a good ,cheap midlayer / all day jacket
>>
>>637124
I have thermal base layers from that comoany, weatherproof 32 degrees. The bottoms I love, warm and fit nice. The top I don't like, doesn't fit right, but I'm really picky about my upper layers. I'd buy the bottoms again in a heartbeat. I'm sure the jacket is just fine for the price.
>>
Anyone ever use Arcteryx stuff before? I wanted to get a raincoat and a down jacket from the but that totaled almost 600$. Is it worth it?
>>
>>639432
> asking this in a $50 jackey thread
>>
>>633366
Buy it. It's nice and comfy as fuck.
>>
I found one of these on a MUP last spring. It was packed (packs down into an internal pocket to a hilariously small size) and just laying there so I put it on a fencepost and waited 24 hours to return and claim it
