Greetings comrades,

This January I'm taking the Fish and Wildlife conservation 2 year course, up in Canada, Ontario. After, I intend to take Natural Resources and the Law. Why? I have this unfaltering duty inside of me to protect mother nature from poachers, and direct and indirect human impact. The strongest argument I have; is this planet of ours, so stupendously vast in its eco systems, terrains, and life, it seems almost foolish to want to negatively impact it, when there is not a single planet that we know of , that is diverse as this one. / besides the paperwork doing routine patrols in mother natures backyard sure seems imperial, too.
The Native people believed all was equal, as a spider web layout. not pyramid.

What are your thoughts comrades? advice perhaps, wisdom you wish to share?

Here is one advice I have heard a retired Conservation Officer of 30 years say: "In all my 30 years , I have learned that being reasonable is the right way to go- it applies everywhere."

How about you choose to not be a fascist welfare pig instead?

^this^

I love nature just as much as any other /out/doorsmen but seriously, quit with your SJW fascist stance, you only deter people from wanting to protect it.

That career path sounds like a desk job. Unfortunately lawyers nor their underlings get to work from Yosemite.
>>
What in the actual fuck. I'm going to wave off these ignorant remarks. Ok, I understand my statement sounds like it is heralded with trumpet fan fare, these are my true expressions, unorthodox or not,.I forgot what kind of non chalant individuals dwell on the Internet, what are you two first posters? Aged between 10 and 14 bred on mainstream apple media?
>>

I'm 53 m8. I've seen the damage your kind does whether it's dynamiting hot springs, closing trails, harassing outdoorsmen and landowners while you drive a shiny new $40,000 pickup and fly to 5 conferences a year to hype global warming.

You are the cancer personified
>>
>>627563
My thoughts are that, at least in north America, the term "poacher" refers to anyone trying to feed their family without paying exorbitant amounts of taxes and fees.

Don't get me wrong, I understand that in the current state of the environment that those taxes do go, at least in part, to maintaining... wait, what do they go to? The only thing I can honestly think of is stocking lakes with non-native corn-fed inbred fish. That's really not nature, that's a facade. My point is, you shouldn't need a licence to hunt and fish. Eating is a God-given right, and the government has no right to infringe upon that.
>>
>>627703
In most states 75% of the license fees are diverted to bullshit programs that have nothing to do with conservation of the animals you are hunting. Most of the rest is wasted on fancy vehicles and employee perks
>>
Gentlemen, please understand. Canada is a natural wonder. 4 seasons, diverse in forest, boreal, etc. Where does the world turn to for minerals, water, resources, Canada. It may not be now, but it is happening. Allow me, there has been a surge of Asian poachers targeting black bear specifically for their gal bladders, leaving whole intact species to die, rot. Everything is balanced, like the classic snowshoe hare vs Bobcat population trend. Companies have paid off c.o's to muk about their filth spewing into lakes and rivers, can you imagine the short and long term damage? Not one fucking company has been charged for environment pollution in here. Why? Money. Used to bribe and blackmail. I am not the heralded son of Nature, but I want to do my damned best to ensure nature is respected. I want to be a difference maker in reality, not in my mind. If there is one thing I want to dedicate my life to, this is it. Start slow, small and begin the necessary climb. * mobile version of course, I don't have the luxury of my laptop at the moment.
>>
>>627739
Maybe you turds should stop importing Asians by the boatload because they don't give a shit about the environment and will hover out every living organism from the seashore. They had to come up with new regulations because they will eat anything.
>>
>>627693

wow man way too harsh. Before you go off on a rant you could provide some actual statistics. The type of person you describe, are they the majority for naturalists? No.

Obviously OP is young and he would like to do something outdoorsy, leave him be. It takes a stroke of passion to get into anything.
>>
>>627790
OK. The state I live in has been blowing up natural hot springs around here since the 1980s in order to protect the environment. That is evil. You may want statistics but the government is kind of lax in creating statistics of the damage they do.

Wildlife bio here. To be fair, I do a lot of amphibian monitoring in southern Ontario, and hear lots of reports of "asians" trapping reptile/amphibian species at risk. This is what I hear from both the public and government. It is a growing problem unforunately and inforcement is a challenge when governement agencies are understaffed.

Oops, meant to quote

>>
>>627952
I've been thinking about doing wildlife bio. How do you like it, what do you actually do day to day? Please tell me about the field/jobs, anything you can think of to someone looking into it
I want a job where I do a lot of fieldwork, I don't particularly care what I'm doing as Long as I can afford a roof overhead and food, but I want to be outdoors.
>>
>>628039
From my experience, you have two general choices as a wildlife bio: either working as a consultant (private sector), where you work your ass off doing 60+ hour weeks during the field season (spring-fall) and then spend your vacation time/finish writing reports in the winter. Working for government organizations the field work will be more steady but way less of it, because there is always politics and bullshit to deal with. Either way, you will likely find yourself responsible for collecting the survey data, data entry, mapping, and likely analyzing your data or producing reports from it.

If you want a job where you are outside all day and jobs are not too scarce, and you don't have any moral qualms with havesting resources, get into forestry.

If you realllly want to do the wildlife bio thing, volunteer a shit ton and choose a school program with lots of practical courses or internships. Right now getting a foot in the door is nearly impossible. Also while its good to possess a well-rounded knowledge base, also try to focus your interest on a taxonomic group or two. (ie plants and birds, or herps and mammals,) as specialists in these areas are always needed for pre-development studies. Hope this helps!

>>627563
Dude, you doing fish and wildlife technician in Lindsay?

Of course there are wonderful things that that tax and fee money could go towards, but it doesn't. The only thing I ever see actively being done to save the forests, is when they dump lake water on natural fires. Those fires are a part of how pines reproduce, and as a result of the pines being cleared for several years, small shrubs can grow without being blocked by the canopy, which in turn brings new wildlife into the area. The forestry service is actively PREVENTING the course of nature in our forests.
>>
>>627563
Some days you're not going to agree with whatever the regs say is legal or illegal. If you do not think you can come to terms with this then you should look into a career with a conservation, NGO, or non-profit and just enjoy your recreational time as you wish.
>>
>>628668
Tell me about it... And the worst thing about fire suppression is that all it really does is help fuel build up, which is why there are so many reports of extremely large scale forest fires which cannot be put out. And yes, fires help several native woody species germinate and would also help reduce a lot of non-native species too.

That program has a great reputation and a bunch of my coworkers graduated from there.
>>
>>628685
Oh right on!

I graduated from there actually. Mind if I ask what you currently do for work?

I'm with you bro

Exploitation of natural resources was more or less sustainable up to the Industrial revolution, from that point on the huge surge in populations and our ability to exploit the land through technological advancements has resulted in us basically raping ourselves.

The concepts of corporate (and national) responsibility for their impacts on the natural environment need to be reinforced.

The idea of profit and growth beyond everything else needs to be evaluated.

The core concept of sustainability is taking what we need but leaving enough for further generations. If we keep going as we are we're going to reach a point where we've trashed the whole world for a quick buck and we'll have no one to blame but ourselves.

Environmental student here, aiming to get into water system management to help deal with our fucking awful mentality towards water pollution.

Native peoples did their best to fuck up nature the same as Europeans, especially in America. They just didn't have a domesticated beast of burden to do their work so the impact was minimal in comparison.

If I recall correctly, in the writings about the first voyages of Europeans to the shores of the US they talked about how the air was thick with smoke from all of the villages and Indians burning shit and chopping down trees for stuff and the like. Then they caught diseases and a fuck ton of them died in the short period of time between first contact and first colony.
