I'm looking at getting some Nike SFBs. I live in a woodsy region, but the prairie is close by too. Does anyone know how SFBs fare in the Midwest?
Also, post boots and boot questions.
These boots are not authorized I/A/W AR 670-1

...what?
>>485071
Just got these for backpacking trips this summer.
Glad you posted this thread, I used to work at a construction firm and there the look was pretty much Cat Boots, I got pic related and want to know how they would fair /out/ as I'm starting to get into it, dont really want to go hiking in trainers, but buying hiking boots would be very costly at this stage, given that I have these.
>>485247
They are marginally better than nothing, but trainers definetely would be bettre for hiking.
>>485248
So dedicated hiking boots > trail runners > trainers > mine is the sentiment?
>>485249
I'm not the guy who answere to your original post, but i belive so.
I don't find regular boots super comfortable for very long city walks, no need to comment on hiking
>>485249
In essence, yes. While they don't provide much in the way of ankle protection or support, trainers have a lot of cushioning, something regular "city-shoes" lack.
>>485261
Not really. It's not the muscles in your ankle that you protect by wearing ankle boots, it's more about the tendons, joints and ligaments there that would suffer otherwise. This only becomes a factor when carrying very heavy loads though, around 50 pounds and up.
>>485263
Thanks you have been very helpful
>>485266
No problem man, that's what this board is for.
Anyone can give me some info on Chippewa boots? Are they good for hiking or will I look like a total homo wearing them on the trail? They look fucking handsome and they have a great rep. Just want to know if they actually serve their purpose on the trail.
Also, I want to resole my regular everyday boots and was wondering if any of you knew any good vendors or places where I can send them. I was thinking of getting a Vibram sole as the Timberland Green Rubber sole is total trash. Thanks fam
I wear Palladiums.
They are okay.
I like Martens more.
>>485071
I sold shoes for 3 years and the rep that people had with them wasn't very high. Most people went with rockies if they needed a boot of that caliber. Seem more like a gimmick really. Just my .02.
I'm looking at some hunting boots; Harkila Big Game GTX 12"
Is that overkill? Also, does anybody know how I can obtain the weights of Harkila products because they don't seem to specify at all.
>>485261
You can strenghten your ankles by walking barefoot or using minimalist shoes, which strenghten your feet and lower leg in general. The elevated heel and thick soles in normal shoes 'numbs' your senses and increase your risk of twisting your ankle.
>>485277
They serve their purpose, but there's cheaper boots that do the same thing.
>>485289
Wouldn't say they're overkill. Been wearing Meindl Dovre Extreme GTX for years now as do most of the game keeps up this way.
No experience with that exact pair but you might look and those Meindls and Le Chameu (sp?) Who make a similarly gear pair of hunting boots that are also becoming popular and compare features.
>>485292
Has this ever been scientifically proven? I remember hearing this kind of stuff during the barefoot running craze a few years ago.
>>485318
Not really. Tests end up bending one way and the other. Personally, I don't trust it but some would bet their lives on it. I have a pair that I wear to the beach to protect my feet because I'm diabetic and I can't say after wearing them 2-3 days at a time that I ever felt any improvement on it. But that's just me. Maybe I'm an exception or something.
>>485292
Or a simple exercise for ankle strengthening is to place a cushion on the floor and stand on it on one leg. The constant weight adjustment really works the ankle muscle and tendons.
>>485071
Two words OP.Lowa Boots
>>485080
The best excuse is I didnt know.
>>485331
I have these but non-gtx as it is hot as fuck where I live. No break in time, can trek for days but probably wont last as long other boots as you sacrifice durability for comfort.
>>485318
Would it be any different from training your hands and wrists? Never shaken hands with some old cunt who have been working in the forest, stone mason or whatever with iron fist grip?
>>485367
Actually, yes. It would be totally different. You don't use tools with your feet if you're a logger.
>>485367
I agree it makes some sense. I mean there's a reason why sprinters wear light racing flats instead of cushioned daily training shoes. I personally prefer my Asics for running but I wear either Converse or flip flops for just about everything else.
If I buy a boot that goes up to mid calf, will I be sweltering in warm weather? I like the look of mid-calf boots, but I don't want them to be impractical. Is it better to just get ankle-high boots?
>>485378
Are you retarded? If you lift heavy shit all day long you will have strong hands. If you use your feet daily, without arch support, raised heel, narrow toe box and other shit that alter the way your feet are supposed to work, you will have strong feet.
>elevated heels
>tapered toe box
>toe spring
>arch "support"
shiggy diggy doo
>>485331
Nigger, do you even Merrell Moab?
>>485428
>these are the only to cosplaying options
>>485433
Nay!!! merely stating that SEALs and such use them.
Many SF dudes use them just because they are awesome, not because they are good looking or standard issue or nothinra.
Both Solomon 4Ds and Merrell Moab are outstanding choices.
>>485317
Ta'. I'm also looking at similarly priced Chiruca Scandinavia boots, but apparently the soles squeak on wet grass which I can see being annoying. I like the look of the boots you suggested too.
>>485593
Lol. I tried on a bunch of boots at my local outdoor shop and those were the ones that fit me the best. I genuinely had no idea they were used by SEAL team 6 or whatever until I read about it in a previous boot thread. I am surprised that the sales guy didn't mention that though.
Should I get Vivos or Vibrams as a minimalist shoe?
>>485594
Most people don't know. The seals aren't big in the business of plugging name brands.
>>485651
Which one works better for /out/ activities? I don't really care about looks, just functionality. I have Converse for looks.
>>485654
Depends on what you do out, vivo's trail freak are pretty neat. They also have a boot called tracker or something thats a bit sturdier, quite pricey though.
>>485768
Vivo makes it hard to look at their boots...
>>485247
that looks like a really stylish way to break an ankle
>>485427
I have these. Idk about operating or whatever but they're comfortable.
>>485631
Lems
>>485421
If you do, get only KSO. The thicker versions don't allow as much toe movability and ground feel, and the el-x is just like a KSO that is slightly cheaper and doesn't fit as well.
Bust as I mentioned in the above post, I wear Lems most of the time because they look like a normal casual shoe, not specifically a running shoe, but feels like walking barefoot. And I can put in the thin flat insole if I'm walking on concrete and want more padding.

I wanted to get these, but they don't come in my size, so I settled for the Speed XTC Casuals. I might upgrade to a better one that comes in 47 if I like them.
>>486152
>Merrell Moab weights as much as a running shoe
>Seen on ohpurators like SEALS
>Confirmed for being an excelent choice
>Solomon 4D's also seen on many ohpurators
I aint making it up.
>>485263
The people at REI say ankle support comes from good heal support. It kind of makes sense. I still like high top for hiking though.
>>485331
I have these same boots. Got them at REI Garage Sale for $40. They were brand new, never worn. Awesome boot. A bit pricey if paying full price though. $200.
>>485071
I was pleasantly surprised that pair of almost 40 year old boots work so well. Always buy a pair of inserts for these things and toss the shitty laces that they come with and make some from paracord.
I asked /trv/ this yesterday but I didn't get any replies. My buddy and I are hiking through St. Martin and Anguilla in June and I'm stuck on what shoes to get. I need something that can handle well on slippery surfaces, sand, and dirt. I really like the Merrell Trail Gloves but I'm not sold on anything yet. Any recs? something minimalist is a plus.
>>485427
These are incredible.
Would any ausfags be interested in a pair of moab ventilators in US13? With about one day's worth of wear on them.
I haven't quite given up hope of getting money back on them.
But, maybe when I do you could profit from my misfortune.
>>487420
I've worn through a pair of these and am on my 2nd. Why don't you like them?
>>487420
Mids or gtfo.
>>487420
That's not a terribly good advert. "Hey anyone wanna buy these used shoes that I don't like so much that I'm selling them after one day at retail price"

Replying from my crApple iphone. The pictures are probably going to be way too fucking big and turned sideways knowing how 4chan mobile works. As for your question I have been wearing my pair for a little over 2 years straight now and the damage to the leather has been fairly minimal. It depends if you bought a real GI issue pair or not. Theres tons of made in china fakes floating around. If its below 40 bucks its probably a fake. The fakes have pleather that cracks easily. And the soles are glued on rather than vulcanized to the shoe.
>pic related the left ones are my current pair from the early 80's, the middle is another pair from the late 80's intended to replace them when my current pair falls apart.
>the right pair is a pair of chinese fakes. REALLY shitty quality compared to the real deal. Uncomfortable, fall apart. Just overall junk.
>>490166
Left is the real pair that has a couple years of constant wear. I wear em for everything, work, everyday shoewear, and my outwear. I go out to Yosemite to do my big hiking trips, I live in San Francisco so maybe the humidity affects how quickly the shoes leather cracks. I wash these boots alot too and I havent used any leather treatment or polish yet. So in my experience they are very durable. You can see the chinese fake is in bad shape after a few months of use (right)
>>490170
The number one way to tell real jungle boots from fakes is the stitching on the back. I'm pointing to it with my finger. Anyway if you know for a fact your pair is real, I have read stories or GI's claiming that the late 80's issue black jungle boots were pretty awful quality and fell apart easily so troops would continue to try to find earlier production green pairs instead. Maybe try some black kiwi wax polish to polish up the leather and hopefully reduce the cracking? Anyway I'm sure theres better /out/dooring boots out there like the Merrells and so on but for what I paid, jungle boots are everything I need. Save for steel toe requirements. 40 bucks got me boots that are still trucking over 2 years later vs 50+ dollars for a pair of converse that I would wear out in about a year
>>490166
>>490170
>>490177
Thanks for the tons of advice man.
Here's the pair I'm talking about (at work so slipped into the conference room to snap pic).
Got em from some milsurp shop.
I always wear size 13 shoe, but these fuckers were huge so an 11R fit me just fine.
Brand is something called Rothgo if that matters.
They're comfy as hell and all, but they just seem to be wearing down quickly with casual use, have shitty laces (which I already knew about), and the inside footing seems to be wearing down quickly too.
$35 total so I still don't really know what to think.
I sure am happy with how easy they breathe and everything, I just wish they weren't wearing down so fast.
>>490185
Yeah, Rothco is a cheap chinese brand that does tons of military knockoffs. For some things they're alright, but in general they're pretty shit
>>490185
Yeah Rothco is exactly the made in china stuff I'm talking about. If you look closely you'll probably notice that the soles arent vulcanized and I'm assuming the sticking on the heel is missing. My first pair of jungles was the junky Rothco ones. They wear out real quick both on the soles and on the inside where your foot sits. I reccomend finding a real pair or buying a new production made in USA pair. The difference is astounding. The looks are deceiving but the difference when wearing a real pair is astounding.
>real pair after over 2 years of constant use, the back is starting to wear down but its not too bad.
>>490292
Rothco (chinese) after about half a year. The rubber is kinda crap. In Northern California the milsurp is pretty garbage. I recommend checking online and finding some original pairs. If you want some modern production ones I heard Altama makes good Jungles made in the USA.
Just bought some Magnum Classics for the odd bit of hiking and hunting, reviews seemed pretty good so I'm looking forward to giving them some abuse.
>>490525
To my knowledge, while Magnum boots aren't the most durable, they're comfy and relatively lightweight. Nice.
>>490717
From the reviews they seemed pretty decent, and they shouldn't get TOO battered with what I do so I'd like to get a year or two out of them. Lovely and comfy though, haven't even broken them in yet either.
>>490973
They're a good choice for prison guards, security and armored car drivers. Not too durable but not crap either.
>>490525
Just in case you forget what brand you're wearing, they've thoughtfully placed the logo all over the thing. Mmmm, no thanks.
>>491185
No. While Danner makes some really good boots for being /out/, this is not one of them. Get a 8" high boot if you're going with Danner's.
>>491189
which ones do you recommend?
>>491196
I'd recommend these ones,
>http://www.danner.com/grouse-8-brown.html
have used them myself for 8 years, and I couldn't be happier
How helpful is heel support for backpacking? I'm looking to go for a few 2-5 day backpacking trips in the Adirondacks this summer, including some of the high peaks and I want to buy some boots that will last me a long time and aren't uneccesarily heavy and expensive.
Looking for hiking boots that prioritize breathability and fast drying. any suggestions?
>>487420
I have sprained my ankle twice in my life. Both times i was wearing these. Also they get sweaty as fuck.
>>491682
If you want something durable and cheap get Jungle Boots
>>490525 here, took the Magnums back as the build quality was pretty bad, loads of threads were frayed and the one shoe was completely out of proportion straight out of the box.
Traded them in for the Berghaus Supalite II GTXs, I'm quite pleased with them, the leather is super nice, especially on the inside, and they're a lot lighter than they look which is nice.
I was gonna get some Merrell Moab Rovers but my local store didn't have them in, or any Moab Ventilators in my size so I couldn't try them on for size. Maybe next time.
Merrell is such a shitty brand, don't care Baby SEALs use them or not
Just got me a pair of these.
How'd I do, /out/?
>>492421
Enjoy your mediocre boots.
>>492432
T-thanks.
What Does /out/ think of the Lowa Renegade GTX?
redwings with orthodic sole gg
I use Redback Alpines, I highly recommend them for comfort & durability. You can get them pretty cheap through Mick Green at ht tp:// aussaver . tripod . com
Also if you plan on hiking a lot, opt out of steel caps because they don't let your feet move properly
>>492432
Wait I just bought these too, what's wrong with them? A friend said they were fine if they weren't everyday wear.
>>490525

Any suggestions for a leather boot for an ausfag? I wanna buy something that will last for years.
>>485427
I've owned mobs a few times and they never fucking held up. The gtx membrane is also shit. I've owned non membrane mountaineering boots that kept my feet drier for months longer. Fuck these things.
If you have one near you, REI store brand is great. I've had the same pair for like 7 years now, and will cry like a little baby if I ever have to replace them.
im in the market, considering one of these. the value seems there. any suggestions?
>>496920

timberland white ledge for me because i can get them in 11ee
>>485956
Not the guy you replied to but thanks, i was looking for a "minimalist" show that didn't look like something a dog shit out after eating some glowsticks.
I bought a couple pairs of Teva Riva mids during the recent clearance sale. Damn these things are short and wide--it's like I'd need a square foot to wear them, and I already have wide toes.
Any suggestions for a lightweight boot in the $60 range on sale? Something that won't soak up water?
>>497838
They felt pretty robust, but the finish was terrible on them. Most of the guys at the store I bought them from said that they're supposed to be pretty tough, and that mine must have been a factory fault. Loads of threads coming loose/fraying, loads of glue residue on the sides where the sole met the boot, just generally shitty finish for a £90 boot.
>>490525>>490985>>490717
>magnums
I've got pic related.
I initially bought them for work, but eventually took them bushwalking since I found them rather comfortable.
I decided to really give them a bit of a shit test and wear them for work and whenever I go out.
So I'd wear them for a majority of the week.
After about a year they are still holding up. the waterproofing still works well (I havent done much maintenance on them apart from the occasional wet cloth clean to get diesel and oil out)
They are quite comfortable, especially after you've worn them in. and are easy to take on and off because of the zipper and also easy to air-out.
They've been everywhere with me, I've taken them when I go flying, when I went on diving trips, surfing trips, long hikes across rainforests, arid countryside. heck I even skydiving with them and did a couple of jumps.
Ive also been told they look pretty fashionable, I found it pretty funny, since they looked rugged after some use some hipster wanted them for $150, which I found pretty funny.
I am still on the lookout for boots that can really take some punishment. But I have been pretty pleased with my ones.
Are trail running shoes useful for hiking, or too flimsy? I'm not talking about hardcore backpacking, just taking day hikes.
>>499291
are running shoes useful for walking

I'm hoping to get these in red in my size of craigslist for $75. Let it be so.
Fucking love these boots.
