>>1093282
Mind to elaborate?
>>1093282
He's my hero.
It's a shame very few people followed his path.
I also live 150km from his castle but have never been able to meet him
He's amazing, Jerzy Kukuczka outdid him though substantially because he did more difficult routes, but Messner was certainly a pathfinder
>>1093313
I thought that was Dinklidge as well. Except GoT is GOAT so fuck you.
>>1094728
>his castle
Do you mean Casterly Rock or Dragonstone?
>>1094830
>Jerzy Kukuczka
How did this guys trains? Were weights a thing back then?
Did they just hike around with heavy packs constantly and climb rocks all the time or did they have a fitness regimen.
>>1095056
Dude was a freight train. You can bet he trained hard. Viesturs started on the high peaks not even a decade after Kukuczka finished and that guy ran five miles every single day and weight trained. Viesturs viewed fitness as ultimately important. Every expedition he'd get in the best shape of his life only to lose 20lbs of muscle doing the peak and then start over again after. You don't leave those high peaks stronger, you leave them considerably weakened by hypoxia, sleep deprivation, and mild starvation. Forcing down 4000 calories at 20k+ feet is really difficult for most people and they end up kind of just having to let their body eat its muscles to keep going. Every day at altitude your body degrades.
>>1095213
>ran five miles every single day
That doesn't seem like a lot.
>>1097039
It's not, by the standards of high-mileage competitive distance guys. I think the larger point that Ed Viesturs put a lot of effort into being in shape stands, but saying things like
>"he ran five miles every single day"
instead of
>he could row a 6:30 2k and do 24 pullups
>(or whatever, I have no idea what he could actually do)
is a bit silly (and far from unique to >>1095213). It's not some kind of religious devotion where you're rewarded based on pain and inconvenience--it's about how well you plan to accomplish your goals and how well you execute that plan.
>tfw climbing stairs everyday
I want to be like them ;_;
>>1095056
>Were weights a thing back then?
>>1097048
Weightlifting and stuff is way more popular now.
