End of Summer 2017 016.jpg

I've recently been going camping and backpacking solo more often because I'm away from school and no one wants to go with me. Last week I've had run-ins with bears. For three days in a row I've seen black bears within 20 yards of me (in a different area). Luckily they've always run off so far.

I have a bear canister and am responsible when it comes to wildlife, but this is starting to freak me out. Last Thursday when I was cooking dinner, a mother had snuck up behind me (w/ in about 4 yards) and I had to be aggressive.

The Catskills are on my way to college and I want to stop for a night or two and do some hikes, but I'm afraid to and am considering just skipping it and sleeping at a state park further south instead. I don't carry a firearm or bear spray and hike and sleep alone. I don't want to push it and put myself in danger even if I really want to go hiking there. What should I do???

Also pic related is mine :)

>cooking food
>adult bear
>4 yards away
>still able to chase it away
isn't this perfect proof that you SHOULDN'T be scared?
>>
>>1087688
It feels like I just got lucky. Who's to say next time when I'm 3 miles out on some hike all alone a bear won't be so afraid and realize it can kill me?
On Friday I hiked and (being paranoid at this point) clapped and sang loudly to let bears know I was in the area. I still saw one just look at me from 25 yards away or so and waited a bit before leaving.
>>
>>1087689
if they were brown bears, i'd say yes. but black bears are big old pussies who will run away.
>>
>>1087682
Yeah I know the feels. I always expect to wake up and find one sitting on the other side of the coals of my fire staring at me or something. You might as well consider the spray if they're that much of a bother where you are and you're not willing to go full Clint Eastwood/Rambo on one, and are truly that lonely. Really though the best answer is to bring someone or several someones. We /out/ists are solitary creatures by choice sometimes though
>>
>>1087696
I usually go with others, my friends just live far away during the summer.
Yea I guess I'll try to pick up some spray.
>>
I bring my dog. He barks like he's high on PCP and bath salts and the bears freak the fuck out and run away.

I keep bear spray just in case but I never had to use it.
>>
>it's another east coast fag scared of black bears episode

Take a shotgun loaded with rocksalt. Bear will never mess with people again.
>>
Jesus, /OP/, where do you camp where you see so many bears?

Throughout history bears are depicted as being fierce animals to be feared and respected worldwide, from cave paintings in France that are thousands of years old to modern native american customs.

The only way modern people on this board can say that bears are pussies and will run off at the sight of a person is because they were hunted to close to extinction over the course of man in north america, to the point that the only bears that lived were the ones that either were timid and ran, or learned to fear humans from repeated encounters, and if people stopped hunting and killing bears, they would grow in number, grow larger, expand hunting ranges become more aggressive when they learn that people will not in fact shoot them on sight anymore.

Bears are an Apex predator and have zero natural predators aside from humans, one bear running off that has the capacity to literally tear a human apart is evidence that being scared of bears, and making them scared by hunting them is working.

Op, carry a bear can, and check with your local rangers to see if bears are around.

Or if you are up to it and local law allows, be responsible for your own safety and try pic related. That way you can go wherever.

I camp and hike with a German Shepherd in bear country in Utah mountains (for 25 yrs), and I've seen tracks everywhere but never had an encounter. I hear bears don't like dogs and will avoid.

Exactly, the black bears. We killed all the grizzlies.
>>
>>1089233

do you WANT to die?

Not in the Catskills

>And black bears still kill people.
Extremely rarely. It's not even worth worrying about compared to hypothermia, drowning, falls, lightning, avalanches, or any of the other far more likely ways to die in the woods.
>>
>>1089251
See>>1088728
Completely ignoring the point like normal.
>>
>>1089254
Black bears didn't kill many people before 1900 either
>>
>>1089255
Wrong.
>>
>>1088728
it doesn't matter why black bears are pussies, all that matters is that they are. but if you feel the need to lug around 14 lbs of viagra, be my guest.

>ul faggot
>nogunz faggot
i carry heavy ass climbing gear into the back country where bears and mountain lions live, and i own guns. i'm just not a pussy-ass bitch boy, scared of something i can chase off by yelling at it.
>>
>>1089279
>if people stopped hunting and killing bears, they would grow in number, grow larger, expand hunting ranges become more aggressive when they learn that people will not in fact shoot them on sight anymore.

You using the fact that any sized bear has the capacity to literally tear you limb from limb and the only thing stopping them is that generations of people acting like I do makes them think twice, as justification to be a shit and say people dont need to be safe around them is retarded.

And my Henry is 7 lbs loaded, with all my other gear its nothing to sling it over my shoulder because im not an ultralighter fag.
