/out/ and music

Different strokes for different folks. Personally I can't live without music when at home or walking or in the car but out on a hike I love the sounds of nature and think obscuring that is detrimental to my enjoyment. Also it stops you hearing things which might be important, like people or animals.

If you like hiking with music, do it. Other people prefer not to. Both approaches are fine.

Supposed? I wasn't aware there were that many supposed to's in life let alone hiking. I tend to listen to high energy music during boring parts/tourist paths/road walks to help me power through them and stay sane.

As long as you're not using a speaker or shitty open-back cans and forcing everyone else around you to listen to it too, I don't think anybody really gives a shit.

I'd rather enjoy the outdoors for what it is, and that involves hearing it. But if you wanna listen to your podcasts or kpop or whatever (and doing so doesn't endanger me), you do you.

I alternate.
Sometimes I will listen to a podcast (less so music, but sometimes music), sometimes I will just walk and listen to surrounding sounds. Sometimes I am on a call with a friend or S.O.

I somewhat often keep only one earbud in so I can be aware of surrounding noises, but am still paying attention to the podcast/phone call/music.

I used to exclusively go with earbuds in though, partially because social anxiety and it was a signal to others not to interact with me. I sometimes welcome the random old guy stopping to chat with me about my dogs now though and don't have such a problem like previously. I purposefully remove earbuds to try to initiate social interactions/force myself to have to respond to hellos and good mornings sometimes, too.

Vary it up? Doesn't really matter--both are beneficial in their own way. Some of the podcasts I like are nature/zoology.

You won't hear the people behind you or the bears. Or some guy who fell down the cliff, broke his legs and is calling for help.

But if you WANT to use your earbuds, listen to music worth listening to like my life with the thrill kill cult, excessive force, kmfdm, bauhaus.

using a speaker is fine if you're somewhere just by yourself and aren't blaring it at high volume

I'm not afraid of snakes, but if there is something slithering around making crinkling noises, I definitely want to be able to hear it

I was car camping and a bunch of teens with out adults showed up super late and started playing amplified music. I just went to sleep but woke up early and cut all the cords on their speaker system. No loud music the next night.
