Cabin porn/general cabin info thread.

I'm moving to a cabin with no running water, wood heat, and currently wired for 12V DC, but the last tenant to his solar panels with him. The structure is probably 15 x 20, one floor with loft. I have to rebuild the outhouse and tear off the porch, then worry about getting the inside comfy.

For the inside, the first priority will be backup heat. I'm planning on a wall-mount infrared propane heater, because the place has a propane range and (maybe functional) propane fridge. All it has to be able to do is keep the place at 45°F when the woodstove isn't going.

I'd like to hear any comments or ideas, or recommendations for what else I can do to cozy it up.

Pic is not it, but similar.

How will you do hygiene and poops?
I have a cabin with an out house and a hand pump well. And i still get tired of being dirty all the time
>>
>>1081802

Primary home or temporary getaway? Pic looks like a rape waiting to happen, needs more open space so forest niggers can't sneak around
>>
>>1081809
I have the option of showering at my girlfriend's place, which isn't far. Outhouse will be primary pooper, but I can always go at work, or again, girlfriend's place.

>>1081817
Primary residence. It's not actually as bad as the cabin in the pic; it just needs a few things and I think it'll be pretty nice.

What about work?

they were fire watch towers used by the forest service.
>>
>>1082250
Well that would make sense then.

I figured, based on their locations, they were simply hipster huts made by some liberal arts grad who took one semester of architecture thinking he was gonna be the next Frank Lloyd Wright.

Also fairly sure that's still the case for >>1081841
as there's no windows on the second story and doesn't appear to be roof access.

Taller houses might not be so bad idea for efficient passive cooling... Paraphrasing from memory. Took a tour to check some traditional architecture. Traditional arab house type (this was somewhere in Mediterranean basin) had doors in all four directions and a rectangular courtyard, the walls were pretty tall. Air heating at the courtyard would rise up and create a pressure differential pulling cool air via the opened doors. This created a nice breeze and made it cool (temperature wise) to sit inside the courtyard.

The tour guide demoed it and it worked nicely. The key was open courtyard and tall walls.

Yeah, that's a design that's been around for literally millennia. Pretty much everyone along the Mediterranean still uses it, the Spanish brought it to the New World where it's evidenced in the villas in SE USA and Mexico and shit, the Arabs have been using it all over the ME and Africa...just all around a winner.

However, "tall narrow house with no courtyard at all that's made out of glass and corrugated steel" is a goddamn energy nightmare. The second story would be hot enough to fry eggs in the summer even in cooler climates (like Canada), while the bottom floor would be cold enough to require longjons and boots in the winter even with a big fucking stove or fireplace even somewhere with moderate winters (like NorCal).

>>1082434
See if you can get a bottle jack or something under the low corner and push it back in place? If it's just on footings you should be able to wedge something under it to keep it there once the bottle jack's gone.
>>
>>1082571
It's just raw wood, and it's got enough rot on it that I don't think it's salvageable. Better to take it off, and replace it with more solid materials if I want to.

As long as the plastic panes don't rattle it doesn't bother me. I would have preferred a full-faced wardrobe, but still.

The veneer on the plywood is well done and matches the rest of the decor just fine, you're just being pedantic about "manufactured" products.

The walls are literally just 2x6s butt-jointed and planed down. The flooring is the cheapest skinny floorboards available. The whole place is put together very cheaply.

How can you tell?
>>
>>1082401

Completely wrong explanation btw.

The purpose of courtyard:

-Privacy
-Every room in the house can have large window and doors for light and ventilation
-act as a living space
-Trees inside yard provide shade for the house occupant
-well or fountain as a centerpiece

In Spain, the courtyard design called Cortijo, is a rural ranch house, the style of Romans.
The Arab courtyard is urban design.

The thing with air is something else.
It's a sort of a tower or turret on the roof of the house.
Sometimes there is one turret on every corner.
When the wind passes a window, it makes a vacuum differetion, and pulls from inside the house warm air, while from another opening, sucks in air.

Known as Venturi effect.

The effect is greater when both courtyard and turret are combined, because air is pulled in from the shaded courtyard.
Sometimes air is routed trough a cellar or basement.
