The Great American Eclipse is one week away.
How will you be viewing it?
What gear do you think is best?
If traveling, what other /out/ stuff will you do near the path of totality?
Remember, the whole eclipse lasts an hour, but totality only lasts 0:02:30. Leave early to get there so you won't find yourself stuck in traffic when it happens.

I work at Grand Teton and it's all hands on deck that day. We'll be sacrificing tourists on a ritualistic alter so that the sun comes back to us.
You're welcome.
Literally no one cares about the eglibse
California fag here. I won't see nothing huh?
>>1080932
Im going to my cabin innawoods where no one else will be.
>get welding goggle
>realize they are only #10 and not suited for looking at the sun
Fug. Guess i will take my welding helmet.
i live in nashville so probably taking a little trip to new orleans to get away from all the sunfags
>>1081123

Californian here, planning on going up to Jefferson Mountain and camping in the woods. Never been innawoods like this before, so I'm kinda spooked. Have you guys gotten your eclipse glasses yet?
>>1082718
yup. just got them on monday. took a couple hours driving around san jose to find some.
>>1080934
Destructulon, Bringer of Eternal Darkness here. Thanks for giving me your address, dumbshit. Expect goons.
>>1080934
>Grand Teton
RIP in peace
thank you for your service
>>1080932
>How will you be viewing it?
the millions of pictures and videos that will be shortly posted online, as if every person on the planet is looking at a different sun
>>1080934
How you don't go postal dealing with all those soccer moms and their spawn is beyond me.
Thanks,
Anon
P.S. Sacrifice the Californians first.

Utards are worse

>Jefferson Mountain
if you're talking about our mountain (t. oregonian) you should know that whole area is on fuckin fire right now, lots of closures.
>>1082726
We'll meet you on the field of battle with our grizzly bear calvary.
Bring it mother fucker.
I'm camping out on a ranch in Oregon to see it in it's totality. In a motorhome.
Getting my ass to Wyoming, can't wait. Leaving tomorrow to backpack around beforehand
>>1083202
well shit, idk where the fuck else to go then. I need a place to sleep. Should I just bum out in a parking lot or something?
>>1082721
Where did you get them? I'm really behind on finding a pair
>>1083202
>spoonfeeding the no research babbies
let the fucking morons figure it out when they get there if they're too dumb to spend 15 minutes googling their shit plans. they deserve to be disappointed.
College starts the same day and I will be stuck in a classroom.
>>1083413
>excuses
>>1083413
Syllabus week doesn't matter in any respect. Not an excuse
>>1081113
I have read that numerous places and don't really get it, if it provides 100% uv and ir protection shouldn't a number 10 be alright? I was thinking about hitting up the welding shop and grabbing a number 12 replacement lens and using that...I can't get my auto helmet to trigger from the sun, so it definitely won't trigger during the eclipse.
>>1083461
academically, no, but realistically the first day is one of the most critical to attend
>don't show up
>get dropped
>whole semester is fucked
>>1083487
>get dropped
>add yourself back into the class the next day
duh-doi.
Alternative:
>Dr. Yup,
>I will be out of town on a family vacation at the end of August and will be back whenever I feel like it. I am sorry that I will have to miss the first lecture of YUP 2000, but it took a long time to plan this trip and I hope that you will understand.

lol. i'd be surprised if 50% wouldn't email back tough tits, be there or i drop you.
>>1083581
>tfw in St. Louis area and classes are cancelled so people can view the eclipse
>>1080932
Was supposed to be in Tennessee right in the path, but couldn't get out of work so I'm stuck in New Hampshire.
>>1083202
I guess i wont need those glasses with the smoke in the air then right? I'm going to try and do some disperse camping near three fingered jack. I've done quite a bit of back country camping on forestry roads in canada and I was curious what exactly the rules are for disperse camping in america? According to the forestry website it says I can camp wherever i want and as long as i'm 100 feet from a road or trail. Is this correct? I'd much rather do that then try and find some cramped as fuck campsite full of newbies.
>>1081110
Yep, you sure won't see nothing. You'll see a partial solar eclipse, which is something, as opposed to nothing, see?
Pic related. Even if you're as far south as San Diego, you'll still see it.
>>1083659
>I guess i wont need those glasses with the smoke in the air then right?
According to Vandy, don't assume the clouds will suffice as a filter for viewing the sun without the glasses.

>>1080932
>my reaction when im a yuropoor living in america and i hear that America is getting eclipse'd
Gonna be in Seattle so I'll be able to see the partial, no complaints.
>>1083401
Well in my town they are temporarily letting people camp in public parks to make the round up and executions easier so just check around.
>>1082718
If you're still around and haven't found a place yet, there's still spots at a place called R+D Ranch in Madras, not far from Mt. J. I'm staying here, it's pretty mellow for the most part, even with other people nearby.

Driving down to Idaho tonight, going to do Borah Peak early tomorrow morning then see the eclipse.
>>1085254
>4 day dry campsite ony $250

>>1085270
You are too fat to climb Mt borah
Should I drive to Wyoming from Denver to see the eclipse? I'd probably go tomorrow morning and drive back... I came to this thread and everyone seems to be camping out the night before, though. Am I dumb for just driving out and back? I guess it's a waste of gas. And traffic would suck. Damn, I should've thought this through.
Upstate NY here....gonna be on Lake George fishing all day so I'll see from the water whatever a partial eclipse looks like.
>>1085438
Pretty much, but considering there's no other place for those normies, it boils down to this:
How bad do you want to see this eclipse?
For me, my RV is level, and a few hundred bucks doesn't mean shit to me. Took me only 4 hours to get here. Money comes and goes, I've got plenty, but an eclipse is kindof a rarity. Would cost me much, much more than that in travel expenses to go see the next one, or one in some other country.
20 years from now I won't miss that cash one single bit, and I won't have to regret missing this eclipse. Win-win.
>>1085567
I live a few hours east of there and just have to go outside. And no, I don't think it's a waste of money if you have plenty. Are you there now you must be burning up? How is Madras?
>>1085589
I'm from Quincy, in Wa. It's more of a desert than this place is so I'm quite used to the heat, thought it is warm here today. Beautiful weather, really. Hoping tomorrow is equally as nice. I haven't been into town at all and I don't plan on visiting, at least not for this event. Normally I'm quite antisocial and I hate crowds and people in general but I figured I'd make an exception for this particular celestial event. All I'm missing now is someone to share my beer and weed with.
If looking at the eclipse is bad then why don't animals end up in the emergency room?
Checkmate atheists
>>1080932
This is the cloud cover tomorrow during the eclipse near St. Louis.
How fucked is everyone?
Aw yes, made it to Salem, time to sleep in my car
Corvallis?
>>1081113
I only have a #10 lens on my helmet, added a pair of #3 goggles, works awesome-tested on the sun this morning
>>1085717
Where from, anon? I read the weather may be dicey for ya in the morning, though I wish clear skies on you all..from Madras, OR, a random Washingtonian here.
>>1085766
I drove up from a small town that's about an hour south of Sacramento, CA. Pretty hyped to see it eclipse in totality. I need to figure out if I'm safe to sleep downtown. Google said that there'd be periodic clouds around here iirc
>>1083688
Aw man, I could have driven you to Portland from there. Currently camping outside. Forgot how city life cucks you out of this many stars.
>>1085717
Corvallis here. Is Salem confirmed totality? Did I overshoot?
>>1085728
The last time I was in Corvallis I met an actual live cuck, it was an interesting day
>>1085774
Best wishes to you, anon.
Madras is looking clear as well.
>>1085780
Are you blind and did not see the map, or are you just that incredibly slow??
You're at the front row to the show, nigger
I've got a question for any Salemfags in here. Am I fine sleeping in my car in downtown?
>>1085784
> still find /out/ to be the friendliest
I was debating even coming until today when I managed to convince my manager to let me switch schedules. I only took a quick glance at a map because I don't mind trekking more if I have to. Looks like I got lucky. Also. If that other Corvallis nigger is camping with me, stop circling my tent or at least five me a blowjob.

>rented a car and drove down on a whim with a pal
>paid $10 to park car in lot of sketchiest motel I've ever seen 45 min from carbondale (but well within totality)
>broken windows and doors on half the rooms
>bush grew from bottom of empty pool, dead now.
>sleeping in car
>too hot, but don't want to open windows more than 3 in for fear of crackheads and mosquitos
>its gonna be cloudy anyway
Anyone else awake? I can't sleep.

About to start my 5.5 hour drive. This map is making me depressed. Forecasted to be partly sunny. Aka fucking cloudy as shit.
This is so fucked.
>>1085829
How busy is the area? I found some spot in the boonies far from anyone. Near Chester IL. Hopefully it won't be bad.
Fucking shit weather tho.
>>1085836
Same... We'll still be in a giant shadow, which is c-cool... Right?
>Tfw live in WA, but working on a fishing boat in Alaska

>>1085838
Its pretty busy. 3 am on a sunday and the truck stop had every spot filled. Highway at 3am was like light day traffic
>>1085875
I'm an hour from Chester, lots of traffic down 55, but nothing bad. Just retards in the left lane.
Hope my spot is empty

>>1083661
Hey, I'm in San Diego! Good to know, thanks anon.
Currently in the path, 45 min till my destination. Sky is clear! If it only stays clear in 3 hours.
>>1085943
Clear skies in Ontario and everyone was worried about traffic jams from thousands of extra vehicles. Aside from a few cars from Washington and California at McDonald's this town is dead.
Anybody else in Casper? Drove here this morning from colorado expecting traffic to be terrible but it wasnt bad at all and I found a good free parking spot for prime viewing with clear weather. Couldn't be happier.
Mostly clear in Madras this morning.
Have a great day everyone!!

>cloudy, rainy weather

Idaho here, west of Cascade. Perfect viewing spot by the lake.

Pretty much done here. Got up to about 75% covered. Nothing spectacular, but the light got weird, like there was a dim filter over everything. Sky looked normal to the east, south, and west, but to the north it all looked kind of browned out.
Took a pic with DSLR behind sunglasses and welding mask lens
SoCal high desert so 64% of totality at 10:22 AM

10/10 experience. Would drive 1000+ miles again.
>>1086231
I would too, senpai.
So many people told me, "you're gonna go all that way for 2 mins and some secs of darkness"?..
There's no way to describe to them just what it is that they missed.
Absolutely 10/10, and sad that it's over.
>>1086242
Well I only went about 260 miles but I would travel twice or maybe 3 times as far in order to see another. That's really how much of a powerful experience it is. It's highly emotional and I'm still trying to figure out why.
I hear you. The next one is in 2024 I'm told. Supposed to be in Argentina. If I can pay for that trip I'm going to be down there
>>1086249
Seeyou there, anon.
I feel like those 2 minutes of totality rivaled some of my most profound experiences with hallucinogens. Know what I mean, anyone? The whole thing was just unreal...
Middle Tennessee - supposedly 2 minutes 30 seconds of totality, but it seemed much shorter
>>1086314
This one was right at the end of totality, you can see the sun slipping out from behind. Last one I took, cause I didn't have a filter on the lens.
>>1086316
This one isn't as zoomed, you can see it's not completely dark out, just almost. (early totality)
Did people actually drive all the way to Madras Oregon and pay money to sit in a corn field full of RVs to watch it? What the fuck are you doing. You could have gone literally anywhere else 50 miles East or West to see the same view, for free, in a beautiful area, by yourself.
ideas for places to go in IN or OH for the next one?
>>1086324
Somewhere near Cleveland is good. Supposed to be nearly 4 minutes of totality. I'm so going, after seeing this ine.
>>1086327
I'd prefer to stay as far away from major points of congestion as possible, it's too long off to say right now where we'd be staying....although camping somewhere away from lights and other people would be best.
Flew to Fredericktown Missouri in a cessna 172. We were going to fly into Perryville but we were running low on fuel and we didn't want to deal with the pilots yelling at eachother over landing order. Ended up watching it with some locals there. Around the totality the night beacons started going off. Fun time, looking forward to seeing the next total eclipse in 2024. Pic is of the windsock lighting up during the totality. Sorry for shit quality.
>>1086332
I'm thinking about booking a room or two in Lorain Ohio already.

I had my camera take like 300 pics, one every 15 seconds.
Fucked up he focus ring a a bit during totality when I removed the filter. Ooops. Oh well, was too preoccupied with just watching it.
Great time. 11/10.
> desire to meet up with other sc/out/s for next eclipse intensifies
Watched from the forest in central Oregon, managed to find a perfect clearing and had 100% perfect skies for the entire event.
Was absolutely incredible. Truly awe inspiring and surreal, tough to even out into words how amazing it was to see. I had my binoculars with solar filters and the corona and prominences were fantastic.
10/10 would drive 1,000 miles for the next one.

>Grand Teton NP was at Defcon-5
>Not as many showed up as we thought and everyone was relatively well behaved

>>1086769
Even the professional images dont really capture it correctly. You need to see how big and beautiful it is against the dark blue sky.
>>1086859
There's no doing justice with any pic I've ever seen when it comes to an eclipse. There's a unique atmosphere to it, a unique feel...hard to describe if I were to try to tell someone who had never seen totality. Seeing an eclipse is one thing; seeing the totality of a total eclipse is on another level. Quite literally god-tier. Touches something deep inside, primal, something I wasn't at all aware of. Until seeing it. Breathtaking, emotion-stirring, incredible and amazing. Can't wait for the next opportunity.
>>1086856

...my friend's uncle's pic.
>>1086926
>it feels much bigger in person.
It is bigger in person. The black structure is the size of a full moon and the corona extends out even further from this. The reason why it shows up smaller in most pictures (especially camera phones) is because they use wide angle lens which tends to reduce the size of celestial objects.
>>1086845
I actually took the 6 through nv and then the 93 up into twin falls. I also had good driving speed coming in. Lots of cars but everyone was hauling ass.
After the eclipse, we went north while 95% of the people went south. Took us an hour to get back to mccall.
Today we leave McCall and go to hagerman ID for 3 days before driving back through NV to Mammoth.
