I've been looking to cut down some pack weight, and the biggest offender is my bear can.
Do i really need this? The western Catskills are my usual spot. I have scent proof bags...isn't that enough?

Bear cans are a meme, I've seen bears break into them before by rolling them down a big hill. Git gud a throwing and erect a bear bag, all you need is some rope.

My throws are powerful, also rangers recommended using dark rope because the bears supposedly can figure that puzzle out.
I'll bring some, but is it true?
Are bears attacking people where you camp? Are there warning signs? If not then yeah it's a waste. You probably can keep your food in your tent and cook bacon on your campfire unless you is a scardey cat

You don't tie it to a rock like some brain dead savage
Just hang a bear bag...bear cans are just too heavy and there's no good way to fit them in your pack.

I've always never used more than a water bottle, a rope and the food bag.
How does one hunt for black bear?

t. a bear
Like others said, just use throw bag.
You can also look into an ursack. Supposedly they are bear proof. A bear can still crush your food up, but won't get into the sack.
