>What do you eat when going /out/?
Depends on what I'm doing when /out/
Hiking is highly controlled pre planned meals. Boat load of oatmeal

Fishing trips is a cooler stuffed with beer. Bacon. Eggs. Sausages. Ribs. More beer. Butter Frozen crayfish for cooling. And more beer

A good quality folding frying pan is great. I don't miss boiling eggs in my trangia kettle
>>
>>1078281
>Butter Frozen crayfish for cooling
Butter, Frozen crayfish for cooling
>>
>>1078248
mre is fun to fuck around with once or twice but i would hate to eat it every day. i just bring bacon and bread fry the bacon on a spit eat with bread. tons of calories tastes awesome.
>>
Canned soup
>>
>>1078302
>all that water weight
You obviously don't backpack. Canned soup is alright as a sparing treat but it weighs way too fucking much to lean on.
>>
>>1078248
Certain MREs taste ok, a lot of their components taste like shit. My experience is that entrees they tried to add spice to end up tasting terrible, like the spice or preservative went bad.

They're also heavier than Mountain House by a lot.

You can cut the weight down a lot by removing components you either don't like or don't need, field stripping them. That's what US forces tend to do when going out on patrol.

If you don't mind the weight or taste, they will work just fine and make a good alternative to freeze dried stuff.
>>
Do you want to be constipated? Then MREs are a good choice.
>>
>>1078517
British rat packs come with two types of biscuit in them, one to cause constipation and one to relieve it.
>>
>>1078497
water weight is only a problem is you will have access to clear water. otherwise you will have to carry it anyhow in some form or an other.
>>
>>1078248
I never eat MRE's when camping, but keep them in my emergency bag in my car. MRE shits are not worth it.
>>
>>1078248
Freeze dried from Drytech.
Real Turmat "pulled pork with rice" is godtier stuff though all of their meals are excellent.
>>
I seriously need to improve my backpack food game. Unfortunately you almost need to sell an arm to have enough money to spend on mountain house for a week's long hike.
>>
>>1078820
Buy a decent dehydrator. Will save you a lot of money in the long run. Plus a lot of the cheaper freeze dried meals taste like crap anyway imo.
>>
>>1078512
>mountain house

Man I wish I were rich as you.
>>
I unironically love MREs. I was in the JROTC program in high school and did he summer camp. So I ate MREs all day long. So whenever I have one it tastes like friendship.

I usually bring 1 with me when I backpack and it's my first meal so I don't lug the weight around. It's a nice celebratory kick off to a week long hike or whatever.
>>
>>1078835
My nigga
>>
after spending a comedic amount of money on stuff to cook with while camping....

recently i have just been filling up a half gallon ziplock bag with a bunch of cooked pasta mixed with sauce sometimes veggies. its light, filling; you can eat it cold or hot. lasts for a few days if your pack has a cooler pocket.

sometimes i go out planing to get down on the cooking and bring chopped veggies and spices and shit. sometimes im too lazy to even take my pack fully off and just want to sit and eat pasta
>>
>>1078829
Mountain house is pretty damn cheap, as freeze-dried meals go. They're only like $4-$6 each for the non-fancy ones.
>>
>>1078858
>literally hikes around with pocketfuls of spaghetti
>>
>>1078895
>literally hikes around with pocketfuls of spaghetti

what have i become....
>>
>>1078858

I like to weigh out minute rice into ziploc bags that I add one full mini-pot of water to for the correct water:rice ratio then add shit to them like dried jalapeno, red lentil, curry powder, beef/chicken stock powder, small pasta shells etc and bring a whole bunch of different flavors. Also a small plastic bottle of some kind of oil to add some fat calories to it.

Also bagged nuts, peanuts especially
>>
>>1078894
Literally a penny per callorie.
>>
>>1078962
I have no idea what you're trying to imply. Is that a lot? Is that a little?

When was the last time you got a meal out? It sure wasn't that cheap. When was the last time you ate boxed mac and cheese? It's about 0.75¢/calorie, it's less nutritious, less packable, and is supposed to have two other ingredients. If you substitute something else for the milk or the butter in order to try to save won't like a lot of people do, you're getting even fewer calories and even less nutrition.

And when competing companies are making freeze-dried meals of about the same number of calories/meal and charging $10-$15 per meal, I won't complain about Mountain House.
>>
>>1078968
I think anon was praising the meals for how cheap and calorically dense they are. Not everyone on the internet is against you buddy.
>>
>>1078973
I guess the "man I wish I were as much as you" comment threw me off.
>>
does anybody know where to get cheap mre?
>>
>>1078248
I eat whatever I can buy in that country. The last week I've mostly been eating cheese, ham, bread, crisps, cookies, chocolate, nuts, cake, tomatoes and fruit.
>>
>>1080023
>tomatoes and fruit.
I know tomatoes are fruit. But fuck you they are different. Plus I get a thrill out of having something so squidgy on my pack.
>>
>>1078248
Depends if you want to not poo, and then later poo a huge brick.
>>
I hate MREs. They we're not bad at first, but by week ten of Basic Combat Training we'd all gotten tired of most of them, and would throw away the entrees and just eat the sides. The bread and peanut butter, the marble cakes, the trail mix.

The only entrees I like still are probably the meatballs and the tortellini.

Please tell me /out/ knows about SteveMREinfo. So fucking comfy

The surprise is half the fun of MREs.
>>
>>1078248
I take tinned fish. Tuna, mackerel, sardines. they weigh little and are full of protein. Can be eaten hot or cold.
>>
When I backpack I usually do snack bars for breakfast.

For lunch I do the individual packages of tuna or spam (the greatest meat ever invented). Sometimes, if its a short hike, I do canned dolmas with flatbread.

For dinner I do something from Mountain House or Backpacker's Pantry. Those are the only two I trust to taste good.
>>
>>1078266
If you don't know what you're getting, then you haven't been subjected to MREs as regular meals. They get old after a few years.
>>
>>1087449
>Implying I meant to write it in spanish
Chouriço it's written in Portuguese, and rightly so. Better luck next time, anon. ;_;
