So hobos still hike freight trains?
>>
>>1076554
There's some guys who do it on youtube, so I don't see why more people wouldn't at least be trying.
>>
I know a guy that did this as a teen until his train was left in the middle of the desert for 3 days. He didn't have any water.
>>
Eh... I wound up in NOPP for a week for trespassing. I wasn't being very smart about it though. I don't actually recommend it. Train tickets are cheap and just a scenic.
>>
>>1076644
Probably because...
A:it's now a federal crime if caught thanks to increased homeland security laws
B:extremely dangerous. Many folks have lost limbs doing it
C: potential for getting the shit kicked out of you by rail yard cops(bulls) and or drug crazed/mentally ill hobos... For starters.
>>
>>1076644
I've heard there are rapist
>>
that is cool !

Sorry
>>
>>1076902
Your A point is TOTAL bullshit and you should just shut the fuck up about things you don't know about instead of trying to stroke your fucking epeen
Your B point is true, but 99% of trainhopper injuries are at the root caused by alcohol, not because lol train danger
C is just another thing you probably thought sounded real true but just goes to show you have no fucking experience

but yeah don't hop trains that shits illegal and you'll get peed on
>>
>>1076902
>>1077227
I think his wording means, "There are people who show it on YT which infers there are more than just those few who do this."
>>
>>1077348
99% of trainhoppers are on hard drugs in addition to weed alcohol cigarettes and heroin so you are right that trainhopping is safe until get robbed, beaten, de limbed and jailed
>>
>>1077348
By all means please enlighten us all with your mastery of riding the rails oh great and wise hobo.
>>
>>1077373
i didnt say it was safe i said you probably wont get hurt unless you're on all them drugs son
do you hang out with shitty thieving addicts in your normie life? no? then dont do it on trains and guess what you wont get robbed and beaten
go figure right
>>
>>1077374
I'm fuckin up already by posting outside the containment thread
>>
>>1077376
There is no way to avoid dirtbags if you are homeless or trainhopping which is why their hobo careers last but a few years at most
>>
>>1077384
I don't know why the fuck you think that
Oh yeah because you don't ride freight
>>
>>1077391
You hang with the trainhopping accountants and shoe salesmen?
>>
>>1077400
What makes you think you're going to hang out with anyone?
>>
>>1077402
Are you saying there are no trainhoppers cuz that's what you have been arguing against
>>
>>1077414
What are you picturing here, boxcars full of bums like a dive bar?
You will be alone unless you choose otherwise. If you aren't following a guide or someone's advice, and find your own catch spots you wont run into people. Anyone you do see you can just walk the fuck away from.

Until you fall asleep and end up in a switchyard, where people like me will do one of the following:
>good mood
Detain you for railroad police and "confiscate" any booze or drugs you have on you prior to their arrival
>bad mood
Beat the everloving fuck out of you, burn all your personal possessions except the pants you're wearing, and physically throw you off the (slowly moving) train

>>
>>1079102
Why do people that work for rail companies get so violently autistic at people?
>>
>>1079102
ahahaha ok mr big bad bull
have at me
>>
>>1077428
Yeah you are hopping trains, sleeping in ditches and alleys being a hobo and you never run into people. You a ninja. Or never leave mommys basement more likely
>>
>>1079107
>Why do people do their jobs?
>>
>>1079163
no one's paying you for that
>>
>>1079107
Removing trainhoppers is literally a specified job duty, and we're authorized by both the company and the railroad police to use any means short of lethal force necessary to accomplish that.
>yes, I am literally being paid to remove bums by any means necessary
In fact, the yard boss is deputized and has arrest and lethal force privileges.

Also, the people who usually hop trains are literally druggie scum and end up causing extensive damage to either the car, the cargo, or the railyard, to the tune of tens of millions a year across the US.

>>1079107
It's a physically demanding job and generally they will hire anybody with the brawn to do it, so they end up with a lot of current and former criminals in the ranks. It also has long hours and shitty conditions so we're usuallly in a bad mood.
>>
>>1079171
Well, fucked up the links there.

you have no idea what you're talking about
>>
>>1079171
>im a big bad felon workin on tha railroad watch out junkies reee
>>
>>1079175
>deputized
Do you not understand the meaning of this? It means they have all the privileges and responsibilities of any other law enforcement officer, which happens to include the ability to officially carry a firearm in the line of duty and use lethal force in appropriate circumstances, something not extended to non-LEO's unless their life is directly threatened.

>>1079183
I personally have never been arrested, but I do have 1 felon and a whole bunch of people with misdemeanors on my team.
>>
>>1079188
Thank you for your service keeping the rails safe and providing good jobs to rough dudes
>>
>>1076813
Is he died?
>>
>>1079102
Interesting way of saying you want to buy him all new shit, because while trespassing is illegal, so is half the shit you described
>>
>>1079158
Never hopped a train huh. You realize you don't have to be a complete hobo with nothing to your name to hop a train
>>
>>1079237
Certainly not going to deny that, but literally everyone capable of enforcing that is on our side.

Never said it was fair or just.
>>
>>1079238
you are right hopping trains is safe and you meet the best in humanity
>>
>>1079256
A lot of young people do it for adventure
>>
>>1076554
For the past three years I have kept a notebook recording what days, times, and locations certain trains around town stop. My city is crisscrossed with railroads so I see this every week.

Why haven't I gone yet?
A) I'm too busy. I just have too much shit to do, before embarking on a trip across the country I'd have to at least have enough time to do it and get back before I lose my job and I've got a ton of other stuff that needs to get done here at home.

B) No idea how to get back. After carefully observing for years, I know which trains are going and which directions and towards which cities. The problem is I have no idea how the fuck to get home. I'm only familiar with the trains coming in and leaving this city I don't have anything that would help me in any of their possible destinations. All of the schedules timetables and shit that I found online are either wrong or just dated.

If other guys did shit like I do maybe we could swap or something.....but they'd have to keep info in the same format I do, I like my format.
>>
>>1081059
You make the return trip in an ambulance or if you are lucky a casket
>>
>>1081059
This is very similar to a crew-change. If you can find other kids in your area doing it they'd be super happy to share and exchange data.

Legit, was in the park in Jasper, Alberta the other day drinking whiskey with another couple of bums (I currently just hitchhike with my gf, no freight hopping yet). We're talking about freight hopping and the older guy with 2 dogs whips out his crew-change. One of the younger guys gets his out (is on his phone - weird, digital crew change). His was a little newer but less complete. So they start comparing and checking the differences. Pretty cool. Then we all got drunk and sang songs

>>1079188
Oh look a fucking gung-ho bull that thinks he's god's fucking gift to the rail industry. No one likes you.

Could sueing railroad workers for assult be an easy way to a millionaire? Maybe have a friend with some cameras and a drone over head. This sounds like a good idea. Thanks anon
>>
>>1082942
That's a great way to have your drone "confiscated" and get tagged with several felonies.

In case this thread hasn't made it clear, railyards and switchyards are relatively heavily manned at all times, the odds of you two not getting both apprehended are quite small.

Also:
>we don't wear name badges or company-branded apparel
>we have no duty to tell you who we are or who we work for because we're not government employees
>we ARE allowed to get physical, anything short of literally chaining you down or continuing to beat on you after you've lost consciousness is perfectly legal
>>
>>1082942
Try it and see. Railroads employ these tactics because if they didn't they would get sued for millions when little Johnny got run over in an uncontrolled area it they caused a derailment also bums are literally bottom of the barrel people worth nothing. Niggers are worth $5 million dead in any city even if they try to kill cops, you are worth zero
>>
>>1076554
Look up Brave Dave's big fat freight hop on YouTube. it's Good
>>
>>1079102
Supposing I'm not a bum but a clean normally looking backpacker who hopped a freight train and encountered you guys. Nothing broken, nothing stolen, absolutely no harm done.
Your actions? Trolling aside, please.
>>
>>1081059
>no idea how to get back
Have you ever heard of airplanes
>>
>>1082911
Assuming he can figure out where he was, it would be very easy for any lawyer worth a shit to learn who the employer is and sue them.
>>
>>1083875
Seconding this
>>
>>1083875
Depends on where we find you.
>on a car at the edge of the yard minding your own damn business
Escort you off the property
>anywhere within 50 feet of the engine, in any of the buildings in the yard, or just meandering about the yard
Detain for railroad police to come slap your shit with a felony

>>1083907
Not really. Each yard will have a yard boss and support staff that are one company (the one that actually owns the yard), and then yard crews from the 3 major and usually upwards of 10 minor railroad companies, plus you have the diesel mechanics from all of the lines plus the engine manufacturers themselves (so there's another 5-10 companies).
>>
>>1083907
>>1083986
Oh, and as a follow-up, it'll go like this
>lawyer figures out which yard it is (with ~90% certainty, since it came from a train-hopping hobo)
>calls up the yard boss, "yeah I have a Mr Hobo here who says one of your yard workers beat him up (while he was committing several felonies by hopping a train)"
>yard boss goes "so fucking what"
>lawyer goes "we're suing"
>yard boss goes "can you conclusively prove that A. it happened at MY yard, and B. it was an employee directly under me?"
>lawyer goes "well....no..."
>lawyer sues anyway
>yard boss goes to the judge and goes "they cannot prove beyond a shadow of a doubt it even happened in my yard, it's literally the word of a train-hopping felon hobo vs. me and mah boyz, I've got people from 20 different companies working in the yard none of which I have direct supervision over, and even on the SLIGHT chance it did actually happen at all and the SLIGHTER chance it happened in *my* yard, I'm not responsible anyway. This is a frivolous lawsuit."
>judge goes "yep you're right, case dismissed on the grounds of insufficiently compelling evidence"
No out of court settlement either.
>>
>>1083986
>>1083990
Are you honestly stupid enough to think that people don't pay damages in court for beating the shit out of someone? I realize you work in a fucking trainyard and therefore probably don't have much of a brain, but it's pretty easy to document assault.
>>
>>1083990
Oh no! A slightly confusing network of potentially liable parties! No lawyer has ever untangled such a web before!
>>
>>1083996
Refer to >>1082911
Literally fucking nobody listens to train-hopping hobos.
>>
>>1084001
Yeah you're right bro, it's just a lawless free for all in there, keep beating people up you big tough guy.

Btw the standard in civil suits is "preponderance of the evidence," i.e. more likely than not, i.e. 51%. Not "beyond a shadow of a doubt" as you claimed. And juries will definitely listen to a bruised, battered, coached hobo in a wheelchair over the word of some wannabe badass trainyard shithead with a chip on his shoulder.
>>
>>1079102
What if I can beat you up though? I feel like I could just kick your ass and leave.
>>
>>1083986
I got it. What's so special about the engine though?
>>
I'm surprised people are still interested in it.

>>
>>1083990
Criminal trespassing is not multiple felonies you LARPing idiot.
If you are pulled off a train you get a ticket and are let go. I have bench warrants in 4 states from being pulled off trains and none of them are being persued.
Have fun lying on the internet though, no one believes anything you post because youre too fucking stupid to even lie right.
>>
First of all, before I start, not a single person aside from me ITT has hopped a train, 0 chance, especially these fags that try to vaguely suggest they are seasoned pros
>>1077348
>>1084186
They probably watched some youtube videos and convinced themselves they are the real thing

Second of all, there are no tough guy rail bosses that will "beat your ass" on trainyards. It is possibly the most dead end, useless job to be trainyard security so the people that do it are not motivated, tough, fit, or even have enough brain cells to figure out that someone might be hopping. The only time one actually confronted me, over a decade ago, I told him I was an engineer performing a test on the car and he apologized for wasting my time.

Let me just dispel some myths propagated by wannabes and fantasizers
-it's not difficult
-you will not get hurt unless you are a complete idiot
-other "hobos" will never hassles you, mostly because you will never see them, but if you did the type of people that ride the rails are mostly young people on a misguided adventure, not hardened druggies. Those people would never venture away from cities where there's aid/handouts/begging

Are you sure?
In Russia problem with freight trains is that they only go for 200-400kms (125-250) tops, then they stop for an indefinite time, could be 30 minutes, could be days. Very often cars and locomotives get changed during these stops. And it's not uncommon that trains only go for 12.5-60 miles near big cities.
So basically, a distance that takes a hitch-hiker 14 hrs tops takes at least 2 days, and that if you are lucky.
It's true there are trains that go without stops for greater distances, but it's usually trains consisting of flatcars with containers on them (nowhere to hide really), and a car with armed guards, too.

P.S. you can't deny it can get extremely noisy and pretty dirty. So it's for people who don't mind having their hearing weakened, their lungs littered with coal/metal dust etc.

Curiously enough, there are some train hoppers with common sense who wear protection https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5lCdDtFFJ4U (seen at 2:21)

>-you will not get hurt unless you are a complete idiot
Hopping on a moving train IS dangerous, because if (God forbid) one misses the ladder while jumping one can get under the wheels. Besides, a lot of people get hurt while jumping off trains - I'm talking about bruised face, broken arms, injured knees etc.

Risk of damage, either you outright breaking something or accidentally starting/engaging it and crashing it into something. They also receive special protections under the law that I don't fully understand. They really don't even let us on the engine, the engines get their own crews.

>>
>>1086383
Obviously lying. Railroad employees are discouraged from approaching trespassers and train hoppers, we would be in trouble if anything really went down. Self insured, liability and such. Safety is big on the railroad.

>>1079171
I hope this is bait. Class 1's do pretty thorough background checks on future employees. Safety is paramount. I've never heard of any company encouraging that behavior.

Also, his terminology is bogus. "Yard boss"? They are called yardmasters, and only the railroad police have full LEO powers.

I read a story about a guy who hopped in an open boxcar, it had a bunch of random stuff in it like boxes and rolls of that stuff they wrap palates in. He fell asleep in it and it must have rolled through a yard while he was asleep (probably drunk). When he woke up he found out that someone closed the boxcar door, and they're pretty tight so it was hot and stuffy, and also dark. Whenever the train stopped he would bang and scream as loud as he can because he ran out of water and sometimes they leave junk boxcars sided out for days or weeks, the next day or night whatever it may be he was screaming from inside and someone heard him and opened it up. He ran out, kissed the ground, and shook the hand of the worker who noticed him. He got off of a big fine or trip to jail because he almost died. It's frightening, I would never get in a boxcar and fall asleep , besides the first places that bulls check is open boxcars.
>>
>>1087731
Trainhoppers love the bull
>>
>>1084155
Yes and yes. Stobe is entertaining and he has like 50 videos. Brave Dave has a few and they're very good as well
>>
>>1087731
It wouldn't surprise me at all if this were true.

The main purpose of the bulls is to make sure people don't get hurt (they don't go around kicking ass), because regardless of how someone gets injured, liability falls on the owner of the property.

That's why they bulls will make sure some of these criminals die in an accident so that they can't tell lies to the authorities. Just gets chalked up as a bum sleeping on the tracks
>>
Rode for a few years myself. Lots of workers and Bulls were decent to me, but I usually traveled Lone and stayed out of sight unless it was around third shift in a smaller yard or so. Had more luck with BNSF and CSX than UP or NS. KCS is a bullshit line to begin with and they're gonna get swallowed by Big Nasty before the end of the decade. Rules in life and the rails alike: be nice and friendly first and you'll always get a little farther than being drunk and disheveled.
Don't go hopping no trains kids. If you do, remember to ride the knuckle and never spike the door.
