Where is a good place to find gems? I don't mean mines where you pay, I mean where would I most likely find gems in the wild? I live in New Hampshire btw.

You need to research USGS maps and any other geological source maps. That's the best way to find things that someone else may have been missing. Otherwise, you need to check out the IGS website:

If you can find good word on common gem-bearing strata, you can look for outcrops of the stuff going by USGS and state or university geologic society maps for your area. They're almost always color coded and will have keys showing the named strata and contacts marked out. River facies will be your best bet, but road cuts and air gaps would work great, too. If you're in the southwest, you can sometimes find stuff in pediments (like little deltas) were stuff would wash down from hills and valleys.
My biggest problem would be recognizing what I have found.

I used to get garnets while gold panning every once in awhile. I would throw them out til someone told me I should save them. I don't know what I would do with them
