So I have to catch some bowfin for my angling club this month. Anybody have some good advice on catching one?
I've only caught one in my life and it was on a beatle spin
Creek shrimp are coming in nice though

Look for warm, shallow creeks. Throw bright, flashy lures or minnows at them, use heavy braid and hang on tight.
>>

In for liking my new fly setup so far
>Redington Path 8wt 9ft
>Okuma SLV 89
>SA Mastery Expert Distance 8wt
>SA 20lb dacron backing
all acquired for about $150 through Gander's closeouts
>>
>>1072964
Would cut bait work? I have plenty of that in the freezer.
>>
>tfw you hid sufix 832 braid in the clothing section at gander mountain 3 weeks ago and waited until tackle was 50 percent off to buy it

Surprised it was still there.

It would work for catfish. Bowfin like live bait a lot better.

I almost bought one of those at gander, but decided against it. Then when I was gonna pull the trigger they didn't have any left kek.
>>

I'm a little upset their cheapest fly line was the Mastery series that was originally $75 (I paid around $20 for it), and kinda wish it was a 4 piece rod instead of a 2 piece but oh well. Really fucking sweet setup.
>tfw the really nice, really expensive fly line requires you to tie your own loop instead of coming with a braided loop

I also got some Mastery Trout 4wt line for $15 for my other rod.

I'll go back in a few weeks and see if they have any fly reels left at 80% off, I don't absolutely need one but it would be nice to have a backup for when my Pflueger shits the bed again and is in for warranty repair again.

Hi /out/ so I'm going to the outer banks the week after next (thankfully it appears the power will be back on after some idiot construction company cut the power to Hatteras and ocracoke) and was wondering what my friends and I could fish for while there. I know the big fishing is done in the fall as the fish migrate, but I'm wondering if there's anything worth fishing for that's edible this time of year. We're staying on the sound side so I was thinking maybe some crab pots or even shrimping could yield some fresh meat. Not really interested in sport fishing, I really just love eating things I've hunted/caught myself.
>>
>>1072972
>>1072949
Only actual bowfin I have evet caught was on half a bluegill. But they are predators and will hit most bass lures if you can find them

theres tuna to be caught or maybe a charter boat to get some flounder, some smoked bluefish would be nice, dolphinfish are biting, a spanish mac butterflied and cooked on the fire would be great for lunch, add a few snapper on the bbq for dinner....

Oh wait you dont want to sport fish.

In an ideal world we would go out on a charter boat as mahi is one of my favorite fish to eat (and I wouldn't be here asking questions). But that's out of my price range, so pier, surf or sound will be where I'm fishing. Flounder and spot can be good eating, my dads friend fried a bunch of spots up on a hunting trip when I was a kid and those were the best fish sticks I ever had. I was also looking at catching some shrimp with a cast net, but how hard is that? I've been fishing plenty of times but never tried catching anything with a net.

buy some pompano jigs fish them tandem for spec, drum, pompano ect. usually easy fishing.

people cast net under the bridges for shrimp or in the bays and piers at night shining a maglight. I would just buy shrimp from the locals its much easier.

The ones near me all closed yesterday I think. Either that or they do at the end of the month. They were pretty cleared out, so I don't really feel like I'm missing out.

Might go pick up a lefty lews if they still have any/are open when I get paid again.
>>
>>1073065
As stores get low and close they ship it all to the ones near me so they'll be open for a while yet.

But yeah, pretty much everything but the apparel is getting really thin. Regular lures are still only 30% off, terminal tackle is 50%, most of the ammo is 25-30%, optics are only 10% still despite the "EVERYTHING 30-70% OFF!" sign, etc.

The fly rods are pretty well hidden, I expect they'll last a while. Might buy a few more if they hit 80% off. Hard to argue with $100-200 rods for $20-40.

One store had NO reels other than the storebrand 2500-size spinning reels left and the other just had the fullsize, trolling style levelwinds left and a few fly reels.
>>
>>1073034
Fuck, that's really 26.5"? I really need a tiny girl to hold my fish while I take pics of them. My PB LMB was about that size with a big gut, imagine what it aould look like with girl holding it.
>>
>>1073056
Yeah we're going down in a truck. Might take that advice for surf fishing.

Last year we bought some good shrimp from locals and boiled them all up with corn and potatoes. Was thinking it might be fun to catch our own this year but I'm not sure how hard that will be. There a little island (named big island ironically) near the house that we can get to easily. I figured there's probably lots of shrimp swimming around the shore and in the marsh grass.
>>
>>1073068
That's pretty cool. I hope mine is still open so I can get some nice winter clothes cause they had a lot left. People around me are dumb and bought all the good stuff when it was 15% off.

>>
>>1073146
Penns are nice, but that setup is ancient. You'll prob need to go through it and regrease everything, PLUS check everything on the rod.
Offer him $25 and call it good if you settle on a price less than $35.
>>
>>1073153
Thanks. What should I be checking on the rod? I found a good thread for 209 rebuilds and fully expect to at least tear it down so I'll try and talk him lower.

Kek. I just got over by this bridge, 1st cast I broke out a memecaster and tossed a Lucky Craft jerkbait. A ladyfish grabbed it and I must have had a week spot in the line and broke it right off.

I gotta start checking the line. Especially throwing them in the car a bunch, makes it easy for the line to rub and get a weak spot like 2'-4' from the lure.
>>
>>1072745
Yo. Just got a 4' cast net and don't recommend it. Thought it would be easier to learn on but it's not and I don't really see any advantage over a 6'. It's still pretty cool catching shit with them, so I do recommend getting one. A Mexican must have felt bad for me so he showed me how to do it. They all know how to do it.

As a general rule, every time you get an old Penn buy some HT-100 or carbontex drag washers to replace the dried out leather drag washers.

You can get them here
https://store.scottsbt.com/PennParts/Home.aspx

or on ebay.
>>
>>1073210
I was reading that while replacing those, replacing the washer under the main gear is a good idea as well. Any truth to that?
>>
>>1073163
For sure, after similar experiences and losing fish I always cut a few feet off every time, so that doesn't happen.
Next time you get a ladyfish though cut it up in nice 2inch chunks and let it sit, you'll get some big snook and reds.

what do you need to know about 2lb

>inb4nano
>>
>>1073228
any big difference between it and 6lb test? Id figure i should tie on a 10-foot leader of 2lb test when just fishing for small fish
>>
>>1073232
Why? Not much is so ridiculously line shy as to tell the difference between 6lb mono and 2lb mono of the same quality.

Unrelated question: Anyone have experience with Gliss line? Picked up a spool of 12lb Gliss Monotex from Gander's closeout for $5, figured why the hell not. Shit's thin af yo.
>>
Expensive rod or expensive reel? Or do you guys try to match prices when it comes to this?

For example, if you had $300 to spend, would you get a $200 rod/$100 reel, $150 rod/$150 reel, or $100 rod/$200 reel?
>>
>>1073233
It's not about line shyness, it's about castability with light lures
>>
Would a memecaster do well with 6# line? I got some that was on sail and I'm thinking of just using the reel for pond fishing. I'm undecided if I should get a quality spinner instead though because I saw someone argue they do better with light tackle in a headwind. What exactly are the benefits of the bait caster?
>>
>>1073237
always put money into a better reel.

Id buy a 298$ reel straight up and just use a spincasting rod from the thrift store for $2 if I had to use all the money.
>>
>>1073238
Then the leader isn't gonna make a noticeable difference and the only reasons to use a leader are:
>line-shy fish, using a smaller diameter or fluoro leader
>abrasion resistance, using a more abrasion-resistant leader like wire or heavy mono

The line to line knot on a 10ft leader going through your guides will murder your casting distance more than running straight 6lb spool.

>>1073237
If I had $300 to spend I'd buy a $100 rod, a $50-75 reel, and put the rest towards something else. I feel like that's the point of diminishing returns for everything but flyfishing shit.
>>
>>1073245
How about a lil reel with 2lb test spooled only?
Id figure thats where casting improves.
>>
>>1073246
Eh. I've found that most of the really dink reels don't cast all that well because the spool diameter is tiny, but yeah given the same size reel 2lb will cast noticeably but not significantly better than 6lb.

You could always split the difference and run 4lb mono, or fork out the five bux for a spool of like 12lb Gliss at Gander if you have one close by (12lb gliss the same diameter as 2lb mono, 0.005")
>>
>>1073159
Check the condition of the grips, the eyelets (make sure they're firmly attached, not too corroded and no sharp edges inside to abrade your line) and the wrapping holding everything onto the rod blank. You can buy replacement eyelets, rewrap and re-epoxy any loose eyelet feet and even replace rotten corn grips. It's not hard to fix, but it's all work that you'll have to do, and time is money.
>>
>>1073159
Most of those old rods are unusable but old Penn reels will last forever.
>>
>>1073212
A good idea? Yes.
Always necessary? No.
It depends on the condition of the particular reel. If somebody used it 4x a week for 25 years, it'll need it. If it was used more casually-just a couple times every year or so-it'll probably be ok.
>>
>>1073267
>most of those old rode are unusable

Like fiberglass rot?

>>
>>1073237
Depends on casting vs spinning and fresh vs salt. I wouldn't spend more than $100ish on a freshwater spinning reel, but I'd spend $200 on a casting reel and put the rest toward a rod. I'd be willing to spend more for a saltwater rated spinning reel.

>>1073240
I've never used 6# test on a casting reel, but I will say heavier line handles better than light line to me.

A spinning reel will generally cast lighter lures better than a casting reel. The benefits of a casting reel are better casting distance, higher drag, and better accuracy. I think 6# test would be better on a spinning reel for sursies.

If you don't have a nice spinning setup I'd say do that. If you like the spinning rod you have already, and you like to throw some heavier (1/4oz+) lures around a casting rod is a great thing to have.
>>
>>1073305
They're won't throw very far.
They're not whippy like casting rods are, and they're not balanced the same way. Boat rods are stiff all the way to the tip and not sensitive at all. They're meant to be able to drag a sizable load of lures and weighted line behind a boat when it's trolling. Your average 1oz lure isn't anything to it.

there is some difference, the 2lb is more limp and casts a good distance with really light weights. you will have to tune the reels drag if ther is any chance of hooking a larger fish.
it is surprising how much stress 2lb test can take before breaking.

Easy, by not using flouro as your main line.

I used to do a lot of fishing when I was younger, like really young. Anyways I've had a renewed interest in it and want to get a nice setup. I'm in the Boston area and do a lot of fishing near the Castle Island, but also want to be able to use it inland without looking like a jackass with an 11' lead slinging stick. Is there a good medium between the two I can use for all-purpose? When I was fishing before flouro was the primary type of line, did the cloth stuff go anywhere? I have a preference towards Spinners, Jigs and other lures that you can give more character with your rod if that's relevant.
>>
>>1073704
Buy quality flouro. It's not bad at all on casting reels, especially when using heavier lures. I have and never will use it on spinning reels so I can't help you there.

Caught like a 2-3 lb smallie out of a foot of water.

Had a pounder before hand out of other shallow water. Under shade in the creek, plenty of deeper holes downstream for it to settle in. Actually saw a big one down in a deeper hole but it was right in sunlight.

Ive been noticing smallies seem to be in feeding mode around runs of shade.

Anyone? When I used to fish I had no idea how to maintain a reel so I would go through a vicious cycle of buying cheap reels and using them until there was resistance and a grainy feel to reeling in only to get another. I had tried opening them up and applying graphite powder or WD40 but it didn't do much. I'm looking to get a nice reel and learn how to keep it lubricated and in good shape this time though, how long can I expect a reel to last? Anyone got a setup they like for plying jetties, bridges and piers? Did Mono/Braid pan out or should I still get flouro?

>Is there a good medium between the two I can use for all-purpose?
All purpose, no. One that can be used between simular purpose, yes. What actual purposes do you have in mind.

>did the cloth stuff go anywhere?
It has mostly been replaced by super braid hard to find the old style braid.

>I have a preference towards Spinners, Jigs and other lures that you can give more character with your rod if that's relevant.
Helpful in that we know you will want a rod with good action and sensitivity, but we still need to know other factors.

>I'm looking to get a nice reel and learn how to keep it lubricated and in good shape this time though
Price range you are willing to spend, type of reels you prefer or are comfortable with learning to use and take care of.

>how long can I expect a reel to last?
A life time if you preform regular maintenance.

So what kinds of fish are you targeting? What kind of reels are you interested in? How much are you willing to spend?

Big baits catch big fish?
>>
>>1073836
>Price range
I'd see myself spending a maximum of 350 on rod+reel, part of what brought back my interest was a big rod tube I found with a few old rods missing their tips.
>What kind of reels are you interested in?
I'm comfortable on spinning and comfortable on baitcaster, but I think I prefer spinning
>So what kinds of fish are you targeting?
Around Castle Island I've mostly pulled in small bass, but I've seen people catch flounder as well. I'm more interesting in bass though.

What should I be doing after each trip to maintain my reel? After fishing in salt should I wipe it down with clean water?
>>
>>1073838
>Twenty-one inch worm
You might have found a worm that a 4 inch bluegill can not fit in his mouth, but boy will he try.

Also thank god they did not fuck up the Texas outline.
>>
>>1073841
I would go with a Penn Fierce II 4000 or 5000 and a St.Croix mojo inshore 7'6" medium light rod. Spool up with 15 or 20 lb braid. That would work for bass and flounder and a few other game fish like snook, reds, and speckled trout. As for cleaning it the reel will have a maintenance guide with it.
>>
>>1073850
Alright, thanks. It's been so long I had no idea where to break into the sport on a gear level so it's been really helpful. Should I be using a leader when I'm fishing around jetties and such?
>>
>>1073850
IMO a 4k to 5k size reel is more for a 8-9' surf rod. Most people around here use 2k or 3k reels for inshore rods.
>>
>>1073853
>been so long I had no idea where to break into the sport on a gear level
Go look them up and read a few reviews about what people are using them for, it will give you a better understanding of the gear and will help guide you into the final decision.

>Should I be using a leader when I'm fishing around jetties and such?
That is a matter of great debate. On one hand it hurts lure action on the other it saves lures. If you are going after toothy fish like flounder than I would personally suggest at least a mono leader. Mono leaders are better for lure action but not as resilient as steel.
>>
>>1073855
Maybe, I am not sure what kinds and size of fish the have in that area. For me I have had bull reds hit my flounder rigs and 3 foot kings hit plugs at the jetties so I normally go with bigger gear.

I would agree with this purely on balance. I could never use a 4K reel on a medium rod. It would fuck my autism so hard.

Then again I've fished in saltwater 4 times my entire life so I don't really know what I'm talking about lol.
>>
>>1073146
So I bought post related. Lots of corrosion on the eyelets that I'll probably try to sand up and repaint. The penn reel seems to have no stopping power even with the drag turned up all the way so some new washers are in order. Overall though the thing looks ancient and well used. Quite happy with it. I hope it lasts a long time.

If I get a chance I'll try and upload some pics of the pole. I can't find any marking on it but it's probably older than me or right around it. It's a seven footer and very stout.
>>
>>1073861
>I am not sure what kinds and size of fish the have in that area

I'm in florida so we have big snook, jacks and just about every inshore game fish you can think of. You don't need very heavy gear when doing inshore fishing here if you're just wading on the beach or in a kayak since you can follow the fish around. Pier fishing, soaking bait or working large lures is a different story. I use my 9ft surf rod with a Penn Spinfisher 5500 or my 8ft surf rod with a Penn 710z.

>What should I be doing after each trip to maintain my reel? After fishing in salt should I wipe it down with clean water?
Yes.
Splashing it down with a hose afterward will work. You don't need to blast it with high pressure-just enough to rinse the salt spray off.

As for maintenance afterward, re-oil the handle, spindle(s), and level wind . Just a drop or two is needed-a little goes a long way.
You'll want to re-grease the gears, springs, levers and bearings inside the reel, every year or so. Use marine grease.
Re-oil the drag plates once a year plus after every outing where you catch a sizable fish that works them hard. Dry drags don't work smoothly and can melt.

As you just got this thing and it looks beat to hell, I'd tear it all the way down-both sides-clean out the old grease and put new in. That reel isn't worn out yet by a long shot. Treat it right and it will last until you give it to your grandkids.
>>
>>1073954
yeaahhh, I'd rather have a loop to loop.

>>
Do I need to use a flouro leader when using braid, or only in clear water?
>>
>>1074192
No. You never NEED to use a fluoro leader. It can HELP, but you will still catch fish running straight braid under all conditions and it's fairly rare that running a leader of any other material will improve your hookup/landing ratios enough to be worth the hassle.
>>
>>1074192
It's a waste of time for bass fishing.
>>
>>1074192
No you could add mono if you want. Fluoro is pretty good for wreck fishing because it really abrasion resistent
>>
>>1074192
I use them on my spinning setups to save braid or when I'm fishing for toothy fish. Not necessary at all for bass.
>>
>>1074192
Depends on what you're fishing for and where you're fishing.

I use it for
>really clear water
>fish with abrasive mouths (snook) or fish with widely spaced out teeth (jacks, speckled trout)
>places with a lot of structure like oyster bars, rocks or pilings
>>
Also don't buy flouro leader if you're fishing for bass. Just buy the main line flouro and use it as your leader, it's way cheaper and I don't notice any difference.

If you look on tackle warehouse/wherever you order from at the line diameter you'll get a better idea of exact sizes. Iirc as a general rule flouro is a size smaller than mono, so 15lb flouro is = 12lb mono, 17lb flouro is = to 15lb mono, ect.

As always I suggest going heavy as you reasonably can for a casting reel. 15-20lb test on a MH rod is great. I just spooled my chronarch up with 17lb and I'm digging it a lot.

One thing worth mentioning is I think braid gives you overall better feeling. Like you'll feel the bottom really well, but sometimes the bites can feel similar to rocks. Where as with flouro the bottom feeling isn't the best. I personally can't really tell the difference between rock and wood, or grass and mud with flouro. I know SOMETHING is there, but I can't always tell what is. But the good thing about flouro is bites feel massive. Even the tiniest of bites feel like the fish just smashed the lure.

I hope this makes sense the southern comfort is hitting me pretty good about now.

To be fair he DID show the brain scan slide that indicates where his tumor is.
And brain tumors are one thing that can be benign and still kill you. Benign tumors can still grow-they just don't spread throughout your body-and there's only so much room inside your skull. It doesn't take much to result in neurological issues.

The big tell for sm vs lm is the underside. When I see the belly of a smallie it's always a grayish hint, largemouth will have a brighter hint along with redish fins.
The lateral line is the big tell normally. Often ive been sighting a lot of bass and can just tell based off that view.

Berkley lightning shock rods are a really good bang for the buck. Only about $50 then look into Abu Garcia's lower end feels. The Silverman is around $60 and works like a charm. Lew's speed spools are good too.

Most people would rather spend money on the reels.

But it depends. With spinning reels, they are all the same fucking design. Mid-range and you will get some smoother bearings and high range you will get exotic materials which make it lighter. But the $30 spinning reel will cast about the same as the $300 one.

For memecasters tho, the $300 reel will cast better than the $30 one.

Thanks for answering all my questions over the last few days guys, I'm gonna drop by Basspro tonight and pick up a rod, reel and some braid and hopefully hit Castle Island tomorrow morning. Any spinning reel around and above about $30 will be perfectly fine and last you a long time if you take care of it. The real difference is just how it feels. Higher end gear is generally going to feel smoother and have a better feel to it.

It was a subdivision but not gated. It was strange because some of the houses had little benches and lawn ornaments on that side by the water, and there was one sign I saw in the ground that looked like it may have said "No Fishing" a decade ago but is completely white now.

I mean obviously it's ok otherwise the cop would've booted me. But I'm sure if a family of 20 nigs showed up with their kids and grill and had a BBQ on the tiny beach there, they would get kicked out.

Is that one of the War Eagle spinners? The Bass Pro nearby, like 2/3 of their spinnerbait selection is that company and it pisses me off. They look nice, but it is all just regular colors in different sizes with either gold or silver blades.

They all have that chrome head that looks like a bullet weight, and many of them have the willow blades where one is gold and the other silver so it probably is.

They're nice, I think like $8ea. Just pisses me off that Bass Pro has such a big selection and it limits the variety.

They have like 20 of them in "Sexy Shad" color-
>3/8oz with two gold blades
>3/8oz with two silver blades
>3/8oz with one silver and one gold
>7/16oz with two gold blades
>7/16oz with two silver blades
>7/16oz with one silver and one gold
>1/2oz with two gold blades
>1/2oz with two silver blades
>1/2oz with one silver and one gold

Seriously. There's an 8ft section of spinnerbaits and probably 6ft is those War Eagles. The other 2ft is Booyah and Strike King and maybe a Terminator.

It depends where you are in the US. Bass in FL and TX get larger than bass in MN and WI. With the warm weather, they eat and grow year-round but rarely live to be 10yrs old. Up north where it's cold, they can live 15yrs but might only get to 5lbs.

And many soft baits have the upside where fish will actually strike them twice if they don't get hooked the first time and that rarely happens with hard baits.

Nigga, just about every saltwater fish I catch is on artificials. The only time I soak bait is when I want to catch fish that don't take lures (mojarra, croakers etc.) or they're being really finicky. This bait soaking meme has to end.

So I've never fished before and I don't know anybody who does. I got a Shakespeare Ugly Stik GX2, 4lb fluorocarbon line, and some Panther Martin spinners pictured here. I'm hoping to catch rainbow trout with these. Am I doing this right?

Also what lures would you guys recommend for smallmouth and largemouth bass?
