I think this has more to do with the conditions of Africa. Humans helped to exterminate a lot of large mammals such as wooly mammoths, but it was climate change over time that really did them in. In Africa, the conditions worked out so that they could survive there.

Humans co-evolved in Africa with the megafauna so with every adaptation we came up with we killed a few, the fitter survived and had offspring and were no longer susceptible to it. Once we realized we could walk off the continent, shit got fucked up. Australia is one of the last places humans reached, and there is really good evidence of a giant sloth that was wiped out in almost a generation.

Our species is crazy because we first started off as prey. There's a famous fossil of a early human child with talon marks in it's head. The current hypothesis on why we are different from other monkeys is that we wanted to exploit a changing landscape. The jungles of central Africa began to recede into what is now the savannah, we needed to move safely between pockets of forest in grasslands so they think we started to walk because it's easier to see what's going on above the grass. It's also more efficient to move on two feet than four. We're the only mammal that sweats to cool down, another adaptation so we can move in the middle of the day when it's hot as shit out and all the predators are panting in the shade.

Somehow this all translated into us using tools and fucking shit up.

The babies see the shapes circling above them, and their subconscious mind sees it as birds of prey, and their survival instincts kick in so they don't make any noise or draw attention to themselves.
