Currently thinking about purchasing a canoe and want some input as I don't have much experience canoeing. I've only used old aluminum canoes on previous trips and have never portaged.
I was thinking to get a nice tandem canoe from a local company (New England). Is purchasing a carbon or kevlar fiber boat a complete waste if I plan to use it mainly for weekend trips and maybe up to class III rapids on occasion? I do plan to start portaging so I can access more.
Other than material, what else should I be looking for in a new canoe? Is a shallow V the best bottom or is there something else I should look at?

Check out kayaks. There have been lots of little advances in manufacturing them in the past decade or so. They are much cheaper now and have lots of flexibility in what you can do with them.
FYI, Class 3 rapids can swamp a canoe.
