Why is this board filled with buyfaggotry? There are usually a couple very slow threads about going /out/ and the rest is /pol/itics and autistic knifes
>>
Outdoors people are often highly materialistic, which is sort of odd considering the reasons they claim to like the outdoors is to "get back to nature" and "simplicity".

Pick any hobby and you'll find gearheads. People like to buy things, have a deranged sense of brand loyalty and superiority for owning one item over another, and simply like to amass stuff.

I also think it is absurd, but I've seen it enough IRL to understand the psychology. The ultralight gearheads are the weirdest, obsessing over ounces as if they matter (or as if they are about to climb Mt. Everest and their life depends on it).

People are consumers, they'd been taught well. Gotta collect them all.

I assumed most people here are way over geared.

I use an old school bag to go /out/, come at me.

Gear = confidence

They're buying confidence.

I know, I know, it's pathetic.

>Outdoors people are often highly materialistic

Stop making umbrella statements. You may as well as drop the "outdoors" part.

>people are often highly materialistic

Which in itself isn't true since most of the world isn't 1st world commercialism. Your entire post is retarded.

>surprised by the fact that people who have PCs/smartphone who post on an anime image board also happen to have an inclination for buying shit they don't need.

Think that through for a moment.

Alternatively, it seems that of the regular threads, the Homegrowmen threads are the least buyfag and some of the faster threads on the board (fishing thread being the fastest and most buyfag of them all). The foraging threads are pretty good too, with only buyfagging about what local identification books to buy (a bit of a requirement for foraging; especially for fungi), but they are much slower.

op here. I camp with a hammock, yellow garden/construction tarp and lamen. Went 4 days once. I now learned that I need to buy a sleeping bag or I'll freeze to death, even in the tropics.

Christ, that must be nice. I can barely use a sheet on me when sleeping. Everything here is humid as shit. If it even gets down to 72F at night it is 90%-100% humidity. I almost can't sleep and sometimes I get sick from the heat while trying to sleep. Most of the time I lay out in open sky where there's a bit of breeze. Though, I wake up and I'm dripping with mist-applied water and sweat. If I didn't need to hike forever into base camp I might bring a fan, battery, and solar panel. I guess I could use the game cart, but I don't like bringing a lot of stuff up and down the mountain. Rhododendron undergrowth makes it suck for carrying things let alone a game cart. But, damn, a fan blowing on me while I sleep would be awesome.

Go climb ice walls in dad's shorts and 5 buck tennis shoes cuz gear is confidence.

Gear are tools. You want most bang for your buck. Relying on information from the manufacturer (directly or indirectly through paid third party) is stupid. It is only natural to discuss what to get, also since there are many parameters which quality tools try to optimize.
