What do y'all drive when you go /out/?
I know these threads come up pretty often, but searching the catalog didn't come up with a current one and I have a question (plus these are always a good time anyway).
I'm about to buy a new car, and my mechanic has a 2005 Outback (auto), 2010 Forester (manual), and 2010 Impreza hatchback (manual) that I'm considering. At first I wasn't interested at all in the Impreza due to lack of interior space, but it's probably the objectively best deal of the bunch given my budget and its price. I'm thinking about putting roof racks and a yakima or thule box on top to make up for some of the lost interior space (pic related), is this a good idea? Or should I just go with the Forester? I'd go for the Outback in a heartbeat if it was manual, but it's not.
Originally I wanted an 00-03 Tacoma, but finding one with a manual transmission and free of frame rust (WI winters) within my budget has proven impossible.
>>
2009 f150. I wanted something more midsize but this has been perfect

Yeah, I was looking at Rangers for a while as they're similar to the era of Tacoma that I like so much, but one of my good friends got one a month or so ago so I'm not trying to bite his shit.

>>
>>1063268
Yeah I love the look of rangers and tacomas but the deal on the f150 was just too good to pass up
>>
Right now my daily isn't off-road capable at all but my work lets me use an '09 Forester as a field vehicle when I need to go innawoods and get paid for it. I've got my eye on a '07 Outback when my daily finally either sells or dies

gutless as shit. even driving level on 395 in eastern ca my friend's couldn't maintain 70 mph at 7000'. not that that will be a real big issue in wisconsin

i have a 2004 crv. i always lol at the looks on the jeep guys' faces when my cute-ute rolls up next to theirs 12 miles deep in the forest. and i get 31 mpg going over sonora pass.
>>
>>1063280
odd question but can you measure the rear cabin on that when you get the chance? I am having a really hard time finding good numbers for the CRV. I'm in need of a small SUV with about 32" of room up and about 72" from front to back, that isn't gas-thirsty, hance why I'm asking.
>>
>>1063280
My mom has an 02 CRV and I love that thing. You'd think they'd be easy to find everywhere, but the only one's that I see popping up are too new or need too much work. 5 counties over in my hometown, though, they're all over the place
>>
>>1063282
i'll try to remember, but
>72" from front to back
you want to sleep in it? if that's the case be aware the back seats don't lay all the way flat, so you'll have to either be okay sleeping with about a 5° bend at your hips, or build a frame of some sort.

Forester, and all Subarus for that matter, have full time AWD. The CRV comes either FWD and optional AWD. Plus The Honda is only AWD when it detects wheel slip. I'd rather just have Fulltime AWD. And 165hp 2.5 EJ25 isnt gutless.

what are power curve, torque curve, and gearing
>>
>>1063285
oh no this soecific number is actually for when I need to transport my Honda Trail Cub around on the highway! it's about bicycle size in length, but a lot shorter height-wise (how, without disassembly, just a hair too tall for the Outback and just a few inches too long for a Forester or early-gen RAV4)
>>
>>1063286
>>1063287
but i concede that subie's awd is top tier.
>>
>>1063288
copy. i'll try to grab those numbers for you tomorrow.
>>
>>1063287
5speed manual has very short gearing, I've gone up mountain trails and stuff and had an issue. Also depends on what Rear end is equipped on the early model foresters. With or without LSD.

You may have just felt the lack of power associated with the AWD. Newer models dont have that problem.

Had no issues, my mistake.

Not trying to bash on Honda or Toyota Rav4, Etc. But Subi has mastered the entry level AWD market. Anything more, buy a 4x4 SUV/Truck if it doesn't suit your needs.

Even my old beater Subaru Wagon was GOAT offroad.
>>
>>1063291
the two i've driven were '07 and '10 autos, and as soon as thry got above about 5000' they lost so much power they damn near started rolling backwards when going uphill. it was my experiences with them that stopped me from buying one myself. but maybe when i'm in the market for a new used car in about 6-8 years i'll give the '15s/'16s a shot.

Honda Cubfag here, I've got an EA81 Loyale hatch as my daily. Slow as molasses, but besides one issue with some stagnant gas after coming home from a six-week vacation, it's never broken down on me. They're designed to meet the needs of their target market.
A European self employed/business owner with a family.
Someone who needs a vehicle that can carry some shit, pull a trailer, and maybe drop a crew off at a jobsite, but not so much shit that he needs a van or flatbed truck. Those go to the employees.

It also needs leather seats, and a comfy ride so he can take his family out on weekends and pull a boat, or caravan, and also carry dogs and equipment on hunting trips.

In 1990 my Father was in the same position.
He went with an Isuzu Pickup.
There were no luxury trucks on the European market back then.
Everything was spartan and the only extra was power steering.

Again in 1999, he chose the Mitsubishi L200.
A little better comfort, A/C and electric windows, but still rides like a truck and the rear seats are cramped.

It's my turn now, and even though I don't have kids I'm hoping the Mercedes is a winner.

>>1063659

>>

god damn, am I completely gay for short-wheelbase land cruisers. too bad they're geared so low that I can't really afford one for the moment since I mostly do highway miles and that's where they are the worst
>>
>>1063759
Change rear end to higher geared one.
Change gearbox to 5 instead of 4 speed.
>>
>>1063584
they have their uses in a few places offroad, especially when maintaining a consistent spot in the powerband would ruin your clutch otherwise. that said, that's usually for really hardcore stuff (also the only time a solid front axle is really much good) and the rest of the time a manual is fine

I run 140kmph pretty often when passing already going traffic. I try not to because this thing is just a fucking brick hurdling through the air. Especially after my Inline-5 swap which will afford me a top speed of 120kmph.

Otherwise, my solid fronts make me feel small bumps but greatly cushion the blows from larger bumps. Speedbumps and road curbsare nothing in these and I am the most comfortable overlander in my group except for that one guy with his portal axle G-Wagon.

Modern IFS vehicles are great going over 120 but anything with those Dana 50 swaps of older than 90s, yeah... Maybe not.
>>
>>1063779
You seem pretty knowledgeable about Land Cruiser/diesel stuff so buying advice question: someone near me is selling an '84 FJ60 with a Cummins 3.9 4-cyl. Stock H42 4-speed trans and transfer case, frame has about 200k miles (330k km or so?) and 100k miles (170k km or so?) on the motor. Frame's been rust converted and overcoated recently. Post location. Depending on that, the 350km could mean 0km or 600km.

With the cummins swap options, get him to disclose everything. And I mean everything. There must be a reason he put in an I-4 instead of the I-6 and there are quite a few issues that goes into mating cummins diesels with the stock transmission and transfer case. Normally, people bring over the transmission 4500 (5 speed) out of the rusting Dodge vehicles into their new truccs. This removes any computer missues that you may encounter later down the line.

However, $4000 is a very good price for a swapped FJ60 if it's pretty clean. Plus an I-4 cummies will probably save you much more gas than the stock engine and even the I-6.

Now, the FJ60 isn't as "offroad" capable as the 80 or the 70. But you're not going to be doing much mudding or rock climbing in either one of these except maybe a shorter base 70. Very decent overlander. But with a lot of 60s, they're too pretty to justify overlanding.

Ranges from about 3 to over 6 feet long, has between 3 and 7 tines, and is compound curved so can be up to 4 feet wide.

Most people shoot 5x6 or 6x6 elk so call it an average of 5.5x3.5x3.5 feet
>>
>>1067516
4' wide, 4' deep, and 20" high.
Probably not big enough.

With the rear seats folded, you gain 3-4' more in length.

I can fit luggage for 4 people (people included) with room to spare in my sedan.

The Estate is much bigger.

First off, do you live in a state that has elk and allows elk hunting? If yes, find a local to teach you. If no, you're pretty much stuck paying an outfitter to guide for you.

Nonresidents hunting on public land or paying a trespass fee to hunt on private land unguided have VERY low success rates.

Why do people recommend 30-50 year old vehicles that cost as much as some new trucks and more than almost any 5 year old used full-size truck that doesn't come with heat, A/C, power steering, power brakes, or seatbelts and tops out at ~80km/h and thus can't be driven safely on most interstates or legally on most Western interstates that have 55mph minimum speed limits, all while simultaneously requring a total and usually expensive overhaul and another $3000-5000 in parts to even be street legal, and also getting worse fuel economy than a fucking main battle tank?

They are shit tier vehicles that got phased out of military service from one of the poorest militaries in the Western world 25 years ago for a reason.

That... Or Ford needs to hunker down and come back with the bronco.. Short wheel based bare bones true 4x4.. The only thing that needs to be fancy inside is the availability of large cupholders... Kek
>>
>>1067675
Why don't America get the diesel yet?

In Europe we can get it with a 5 cylinder diesel sourced from an Italian tractor.
Same engine was in the XJ 20 years ago.

That's VW.

Also the thing is, this was an open secret. Everyone knew about it.

The German road tax system is based on grams of co2 per km, which is tested during the vehicle inspection every year or two.
When "scandal" VW cars were tested they all scored 20g higher than what's on paper.
>>
>>1067691
Because nobody can make a diesel engine that meets EPA requirements for US use other than the American truck manufacturers. And while they're quite powerful and efficient for their size, they could be so much better without all the restrictive technology that keeps the emissions down.
>>
>>1068128
Trucks and Vans are in a different category in terms of weight and use so less restrictions probably apply to them.
>>
>>1068128
While I hate emmission laws because "global warming is real, cars did it!" I can also appreciate them.. Back in the 80s and early 90s when the medical community started studying the effects of direct contact of exhaust emissions on your health proved that it lowered IQ and other related health concerns to direct contact.. Inner-citys felt it the most. It also stunted puberty in children.. I'm glad for that. But I think they've gone too far.. Especially since electric cars are still so far from being a thing.

Those Jeep "Cherokee" have the same basic VM Motori engine as the Diesel Wrangler has had since forever.
If it can pass emissions requirements on one car it should do the same on another.

Why did you guys get a Diesel Cherokee/Liberty and not a Wrangler?
Makes no sense.
>>
>>1068132
This is true, yes, but I don't see why someone like Toyota or Nissan couldn't put a turbodiesel V6 or I4 in something like the Tacoma/Frontier since, as a truck, they wouldn't be subject to as strict a requirement as a sedan would. They do it in the asian and euro markets.

>tfw we're AT LEAST 50 years from an electric truck capable of doing actual truck stuff

>>
>>1068188
I got a liberty because I live in the states and there are no diesel wranglers here. The diesels can't pass emissions here, or they couldn't... New ones are a little "greener" so the couple years. They out them in the KJs for two years as a test run and emission laws got tighter and shut that down. Diamler-Chrysler just started putting diesels into their Rams and jeeps again with a lot of success so I think some of the new Wranglers will have them... that being said... Fuck you my liberty is cooler than your out rig

>>
>>1069697

>electric truck
Current electric motor designs have to pick torque or battery life. I can see a diesel-electric hybrid doing okay but in order to get the torque necessary to haul significant weight you'd slaughter battery life. And current electric motors are ~80% efficient, so while they can be improved they can't be improved enough.

So unless there are humongous breakthroughs in battery energy density and weight, not happening. And there aren't any on the horizon, batteries are a mature technology (lithium ion batteries were commercialized in like 1898).

There also wasn't really a pressing reason to work on better batteries until relatively recently. Now that renewable energy and electric cars are limited only by energy storage, more people are looking at solutions. For example, John Goodenough recently patented a solid-glass electrolyte battery that he claims significantly improves cost, safety, longevity, charge time, and energy density. No reason to think we won't see more solutions in the near future given whoever comes up with one will be insanely rich.

All depends on what you want to do. If you're like me, hauling full bee hives into the backwoods and back, none of those cars will work. However if you only need it to carry your equipment to trekking parking spots near the highway, all of them can do that.

From what I hear, the foresters are pretty good cars (several hunters around here drive them, and the only complaint is that they are to long and low for the less maintained tracks). However, you have to be aware that they are pretty much useless offroad, best they can do is gravel or dirt roads. Still, out of the cars you listed, it's probably the only one that will get you out and back all year long - the others look like they'll get stuck in the first pothole.

Getting a manual is definitely the right decision, automatics are terrible to drive off the road.

If you're looking for a serious outdoors vehicle, I'd recommend a Suzuki (or Maruti, depending on where you live) Samurai or Jimny. They are somewhat small, but have offroad capabilities comparable to a Unimog or HD Landcruiser.

Also, looking at surplus vehicles might be an option. while military vehicles are usually mostly geared towards carrying capacity, they still posses above average offroad capabilities and quite a bit cheaper than their civilian counterparts (were I'm living, you can get a military G class for 7000€, less then half of what a civilian one from the same series would cost in comparable condition).
>>
>>1067633
>Why do people recommend 30-50 year old vehicles that cost as much as some new trucks
Where the hell do you live that Pinzgauers are that expensive? Pinzgauers in top condition (restored and all) go for around 10000 in most of europe, the rusty beaters more like 3000. Even crappy pseudo-SUVs like the Dusters are more expensive, with the cheapest comparable vehicle (UAZ bus) still costing 20-30 grand.

I met someone who encountered a similar problem recently.

Trying to register a Ford truck from 1948, the inspection department told him it needed seat belts or else it would never be allowed on the road.
The tax department said it couldn't be classified and plated as a historic vehicle because seatbelts are a permanent alteration that goes against the vehicle's authenticity.

If you're in the US, go back an buy it. Landys are rare over there I believe?

Here in the UK they are common as muck, but I have a huge love for the marque and am on my second. Had a Freelander 1.8, died on me, now on a pre-Defender 110 2.5, pic related.

Bought both second-hand cheap, and both had a wealth of issues. All Land Rovers do, but if you're a DIY mechanic you can sort most stuff, and buying cheap leaves you money left over for professional fixes.

Long-distance overlanding I'd drive nothing else, save a Toyota Land Cruiser in parts of the world where Land Rover part sourcing would be an issue.
>>
>>1075349
See below

>>1075343
Jeep ZJs are nice. XJs are cheaper and more plentiful. You can probably find a nice, lightly modified XJ for $4000 and some good offroad tyres on it.

The three main SUV platforms are nice, too. Tahoe, 4Runner, Exploder. They all have their own issues with lifts, drivetrain, interior, etc. But that's why they're all under $5000

>>1075385
They're rare, sure. But so are parts for the Land Rover. Those two cabin vents are $500 each here and no one has them in scrap yards so you gotta make your own. Same thing with the first and second generation Range Rovers. Mechanics are far an in between so if the computer one day crashes (possibly due to offroading mishaps) then you have a really hefty repair just to hook it all up.

I used to love the defenders and series IIs until I got in one. Can't be comfortable on road on them and they eat up almost as much gas parts are way too expensive throughout the America. Though, they do have their benefits compared to the full sized SUVs. I'd take one overlanding for sure. G-Wagon, Defender, or FJ70/80.
>>
>>1075394
That's oba ly the main reason why I'm probably passing on the Disco, the parts and maintenance would be awful, especially on a vehicle that's already got some minor issues.
Im pretty much narrowing the options down based on what I'm reading on here from others, and my own dumb ass pickiness.
I like the Land Rover body style A LOT and of the color is white its preferred, but when it comes to interior and audio shit I don't mind anything as long as its intact and not in shambles.

Oh yeah I won't lie, she's not comfortable for driving long distance, although I have fitted Range Rover Classic seats so it's a bit more bearable. Still, will be driving London to Santiago this winter across the Pyrenees, planning on reporting on the experience here. All rear seats removed so room for ~1200 litres of gear, or 2 people lying flat. Thinking about fitting shelves etc.

The series/early defender models are definitely for serious enthusiasts, Disco II and late-model defenders would make more sense in America with the parts/compatability issues. If you want a cheap, functional 4x4 I would recommend a Freelander I, although it might not last that long. Freelander II, Disco IV/Sport, late model Range Rovers are all fantastic vehicles, but not really offroaders now, more status SUVs.

I understand you on the parts issue mate. Even in England I never buy original Land Rover parts or from the company, it is silly money. Scrap yards/ebay/facebook are great though, there's a big Landy community in the UK.

If you can find a decent late-model Defender for less than 10,000 it's worth it, I'll fucking ship the parts to you just see one running off road in the US.

Pic is same 110, can't resist editing like a wanker

I love Land Rovers too. Shame they don't like their owners... heh Get this one >>1075410. More information? Looks like locks and 33inch KO2s with a 3-4 inch lift kit.

Try 30 000. That's the USD pricing around here. If you find one for 25 000 mint (which they almost always are since muh aluminium), you can easily resell it for 35 000 if you wait long enough and if you're in the right areas.

I have a Land Cruiser here that has a lot of part overlap and Aussie aftermarket everything. The Aussies source OEM grade parts for every single country that borders the Pacific Ocean, South America, and Africa. Land Rover simply can't compete with that especially in the states (or anywhere that isn't GB and Africa).

I may have a hook on a 110 Defender for $20k which I will get as a winter driver (because aluminium body) and probably sell it for $30k next summer when I bring my Cruiser back out after the engine swap. I do small overlands every once in a while and post them on /out/. How is the drive there? I just came back from Ireland and damn was I considering shipping over my LC on a crate for $3k and overlanding in Europe for two months.

Oh and seeing the Land Rovers offroad in Canada are a really, really rare sight. Even the ones built up, people just don't want to risk getting the computers wet or a ding on the body. Every ding costs you $100 and when you're doing offroading in a $35000 vehicle, that kinda stuff matters.

If this 110 works out, I'll be sure to be taking it /out/ with loads of pictures.

Yeah, it's only going for $3000 atm too. Gotta have the guy email me back and ill be getting more info about it.
If it drives and handles better than the 04' I'll probably pick it up sometime soon. Just want to get a good /out/ vehicle before it's too late to drive a few hours north and go camping for a weekend

If that lift was done properly, the tyres lift and roof rack itself is worth $3000. It probably will not handle better than the ZJ (partially due to XJ and mostly to do with the fact that it's lifted) so try and not to focus too much on that.

If you buy it and it's mechanically sound apart from normal XJ stuff (occasional offroad overheating in the desert, a/c randomly going off, small issues with power everything), it won't be a good /out/ vehicle. It will be an excellent /out/ vehicle.

I'm the Mazda CX5 guy, I don't really need anything as hardcore as a Jeep either but it would be cool to have as a secondary car if I'm going to places where there's really rough conditions.

I'm looking at something like a Toyota RAV4 too, they're not as sexy looking or fun to drive as the Mazda but it has a lot more cargo space, especially when you fold the back seats down.
